@S0KE2 жыл бұрын
@@dertythegrower the permissions an app has does not equal the stuff they collect, any messaging app for example needs access to contacts to be able to show them to you inside the app, the same way it would need access to your files if you want to send an image to a friend, that does not inherently mean the app sends the information it gets from those permissions back to their servers. It certainly could, but a permission is not definitive proof of it. That been said, google collecting all that data in those apps should not come as a surprise to anybody, just assume every google app is sending lots of info back to google

Not a perfect privacy solution as a whole, but it would solve the one mentioned in this video: For those who can't flash degoogled ROMs, you can use "Signal" as your default SMS app. Apple wouldn't even let you do that on your own iPhones...
@nick99872 жыл бұрын
the problem with signal is that it offers only the absolute bare bones sms capabilities. you can't even send more than a single picture per message. tradeoffs i guess... but still, would be nice if a better alternative existed.
@cjcq72 жыл бұрын
@@nick9987 SMS is "barebone" by design as it can only send texts. The reason why MMS cannot send more than 1 picture per message is by design as well, due to the size limitation of MMS. These aren't issues caused by Signal when used as an SMS/MMS app.

22:01 You DO NOT want to have your ID made only digital and on your phone devices. There are airports around the world including the USA, that will demand you hand over your cell phone device and they will go and clone your cell phone. When you go through checkpoints, airports or any other travel points, you want to make sure of a few things. First you do NOT want to have fingerprint or pin-code login activated on your phone, There have been reports of airport security arresting people, and while they are handcuffed, security would take your device and unlock it with your fingerprint while you are handcuffed for any reason. Even if the police say they are only detaining you & setting your free. They just want to abuse that certain time, to unlock your phone so its easier for them to attach it to their machine and clone your device. Second point is you want to have your phone completely turned off. Most phones if activated properly would be encrypted when you first activate the phone for the first time. having your phone completely powered off, prevents security or police from attaching your phone to their cloning computer and reading the hash from memory that unlocks your phone. Make sure your phone is completely encrypted and completely powered off when going through ANY airport and other security checkpoint. Even Edward Snowden talks about this.
@TwstedTV Жыл бұрын
If need be, purchase a really cheap cell phone and when activating the phone DO NOT use your main email for the phone. Use another email service that you dont have personal information or personal emails attached to the device or you and that its rarely used to activate the phone. Do not log in with any google accounts on that device or any social media with it. So when asked to show your digital ID and if security takes your phone to the back room, they wont have anything to copy, since there is nothing attached to that phone including any social media or personal email accounts that identifies you directly. If you know you are going home, FedEx your device to your home, while you carry your dummy phone. Thats if you need to carry your personal phone. If you dont, then leave your personal phone at home, while you carry the dummy phone when traveling.

In relation to the "Telegram case in Brazil", what really happens is that the Federal Supreme Court (STF) practically rebelled and has been acting extremely aggressively, even outside the Brazilian Constitution, arresting people for crimes that do not exist and releasing large criminals. It's been tense around here. Many people are already afraid of being persecuted for posting opposing opinions and criticisms on their social media. They even demanded that Telegram delete a post in which the President of the Republic presents a report from the Federal Police in which they identified and attested to insecurities in the electoral system, discovered in an investigation. It is already widely perceived here in Brazil that political persecution is taking place. The Supreme Court persecutes journalists, activists, arrests and confiscates property of citizens and congressmen, censors some newspapers and tries at all costs to override other institutions of the Legislative and Executive, and even to overthrow the President.

Is Telegram better than WhatsApp though? Legit question. Afaik, it depends on what you are looking for, because that's always the case I guess... not for me though. From my personal testing - Of course everyone focus and is worried about WhatsApp, as they should, because it's owned by Facebook and Facebook has broken promises about how it would handle the app, which prompted the resignation of the CEO who really cared about privacy - he left to join the Signal Foundation. The constant threat of Facebook taking another step to erode privacy on the platform, plus the fact that it harvests metadata is plenty for lots of privacy conscious people to avoid it like the plague, that I understand. But I think lots of people miss the history of WhatsApp before criticizing it on the Facebook ownership basis in the first place. One of the original founders and CEO was very privacy conscious. At some point, when a few messaging apps were only offering opt-in encryption that almost no one used, WhatsApp just flipped a switch and seamlessly enabled Signal encryption for everyone all at once by default without even an opt-out option. Obviously, this must have been a huge operation internally, but just like that, overnight, everyone's chat was end to end encrypted by default. Because that was the right thing to do. Again, now that he's not on the helm and Facebook already proven it wants to interfere with WhatsApp as much as it can, there are of course reasons to worry... but I'm not sure if I'd trust Telegram more than it. Afaik, WhatsApp so far didn't undo it's current stance on encrypted messages. But I personally tried and tested Telegram, and what I saw there also wasn't great. First of all, the messages are not end to end encrypted by default. I think they are encrypted 'till it gets to the server, but to have full end to end encryption you gotta opt-in. It also uses it's own algorithms, not something as well known as Signal, which has popped up flaws and problems before according to security researchers. Quick look at it's wiki page will tell the timeline. But man, it was hard to find how to activate end to end encryption even when I was actively looking for it. They basically buried the toggle pretty deep in, to the point I doubt the vast majority of people uses or even knows it exists at all. If I remember correctly and they haven't changed it in a couple of years or so, it's not on configurations, it's not on options, it's not on profile, it's not on messaging options... even Facebook Messenger made it easier to find. You have to click on the photo of the profile of the person you wanna activate end to end encryption on a case per case basis, then go into the options of the specific conversation, and only then you'll find something like "secret messaging" or something like that, which is the end to end encryption option. As some will know on the history of it, Telegram was founded by Russian social network developers that suffered persecution under Putin's regime. I think nowadays it's hosted in Dubai or something. I know most of this because someone asked about Telegram to me as an alternative to WhatsApp when I was recommending a switch to Signal, so I just went and checked. At least to me, it doesn't seem like a good alternative at all. My recommendation has been, if you are thinking of switching to Telegram, just stay on WhatsApp, or go Signal. I mean, as a simple and straightforward way of doing it with no tech knowledge... there are other options, but none are as simple. Oh, extra tidbit of information - Facebook representative in Brazil got ARRESTED years ago because WhatsApp did not (could not) release message content of suspected criminals for a police investigation, and the app also had a few outages. But you know, this was back when the original WhatsApp CEO was still at the helm. Brian Acton btw... I think he's a potential candidate for taking the role of CEO at Signal, currently serving as interim CEO after Moxie left.

Everything not belonging to Big tech is a better option...that is why Telegram is better

Telegram is not open sourced on the servers. Majority is not run accounts. Privacy and encryption has to be selected every time sending private messages its not a default. There is no privacy.

We strongly recommend avoiding random ROMs/phones, and sticking with ones thoroughly researched with large community oversight. Several options listed on our resources page: techlore.tech/resources Don't take our word for it: - www.privacyguides.org/ - thenewoil.org/

The source isn't posted publicly. No comment on if it will be fully open source or partially open sourced? Too many questions to recommend right now.

@@bobbyjohnson116 Braxman said they will post it soon. Most likely it is AOSP as claimed. I would trust him.

@@techlore Why aren't you informing people that they could be using open source tools like Netguard to harden their android phones, Briar as secure message, or inform people that Apple does "backup" unencrypted so in effect ALL their security is useless. Hm?
