I believe your video might have addressed the problem, but I’ll ask anyway. My swarm traps are attracting swarms, but they’re collecting on the outside of the swarm boxes (one actually built a nice structure under it.) I have three screened holes in each swarm trap, one on either end, and one on the bottom. Inside are a few trays of old comb, and of course lemon grass oil. Should I plug these holes (except for entrance?) Thanks for your videos! PS: You’re videos on hive splitting are especially excellent. I employ this method down to the finest detail. Thank you for providing clear and concise reasoning and instruction. You have a particular talent in producing videos that are entertaining, direct, very enjoyable to view, and all without wasting time. As viewers we don’t often enough say “thank you”, but one needs only to see your YT following to appreciate the fine job you do. Stay well, and keep your spirit nurtured. My week is not complete without your Friday morning presentations! In His spirit, Mark Clinton, OK

First, thank you for your very kind words Mark. It brings me great joy to share my bee keeping experiences, and I'm very grateful to all who follow along with them. As far as your traps, I have always thought swarms prefer complete darkness when choosing a home. Still, I have had swarms build under the trap as well. However, for the most part, they will build inside of the trap. Don't lose hope and continue setting and baiting the traps, they really catch bees. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Why i like swarms, better than Splits is > THERE READY TO GO TO WORK. There primed up and ready to do it. That all i use is Lemongrass oil, on a piece of rag . THAT IT if i got some empty brood comb, i do put it in there, but not necessary to do so. The wax moths over the last few years. I really want even put it in there any more> I still got the battle marks from them 1 1/2 years ago They tore me up big time. The hives that didn't have the oil traps

As a second year beekeeper I don't have the luxury of old comb frames. I have never catch a swarm with clean Lemongrass. I have made myself a recipe. Use any of my second hand boxes, 10. 8.6 or 5 frame hives to make it into a catch box. Use starterstrip frames. My recipe is: Half a cup of olive oil, then few {5} drops of other oils, Lemongrass and Lavender. Mix it all together and use a clean brush to give the hive a few strokes inside the hive with the mix! Now put the catch box out and wait. I have catch 52 swarms this season!!

Swarm traps also help maintain genetic diversity not only in your bee yards but your neighbors and wild hives too. A rare win-win in my mind.

Good luck Mr. Ed! Are you and the Rooster having your annual swarm competition? If so you may have an advantage in him unless he took a few traps to California with him.

The Rooster and I share a very competitive nature, and we are both up to the challenge of a tough swarm season. At the end of the season, there can only be one who wins, and I'm betting it's going to be me. Get ready for some fun. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Would it be smart to put used honey comb as well as old comb in to a person's swarm traps ? Keep up the great videos
@JeffHorchoff3 жыл бұрын
Personally I think it would be a mistake, it would draw robber bees before the swarm bees and could possibly keep swarm bees away. But that's just my opinion. Glad yo enjoyed the video, thanks for watching. God's peace Dave. Mr. Ed

@dreville1003 жыл бұрын
If you don’t find the queen in the swarm you catch what should you do? Will they stay and make a new one?
@JeffHorchoff3 жыл бұрын
A swarm needs a queen in order to survive. If the swarm does not have a queen and one is not introduced to them, the swarm will perish. I have had it happen that the queen was dead in the swarm, but I merged the bees with another hive in the yard. The bees, on there own, have no way of making a queen. Thanks for watching. Psa. If you're in Australia using comb in traps is not allowed under biosecurity laws as it is a major vector for afb spread. It carries big fines.

I do not know what the tool is called, but you can find them in many different stores. Harbor Freight was where I purchased mine. My name is Jeff Horchoff, just like the channel name, but on the channel I refer to myself as Mr. Ed. That was a name I was given when I began working at the Post Office back in '82, and when I retired and began my KZbin channel, because I liked the name so much, I continued calling myself that.
