Excellent. I've had the Volca Bass and the Volca keys for awhile now. Been thinking about getting the sampler and a microbrute. I'm debating on the brute, microkorg or the roland system1. I love the heavier, grittier sound of the brute though.

Sounds awesome! I have the microbrute and the beats. However I can't get the beats to run unless I'm actually hitting the keys on the microbrute. I have the gate out on back of microbrute patched to gate in on the Volca Beats. What am I doing wrong? I'd love to create a beat on the Volca and then play a rhythm on the microbrute but have it in sync. Can you point me in the correct direction? Thanks much!
@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 6 жыл бұрын
thanks for your comment. The Microbrute gate out out is rather unpractical as a master, exactly for the reasons you mentioned. On the other hand, if you use the Volca as master sending the sync signal to the Microbrute, the Microbrute will play only in half tempo because the Volca sync works with 8th nothes instead of 16th. My solution was using an external midi master clock that sends signals to both the Microbrute and the Volca (see description of the video). Hope that helps

That volca sample sounds better than the volca beats in my opinion. Love that kick. How good are the samples playing from it vs a PC with a good sound card?
@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 8 жыл бұрын
+Jennifer Gwinn Thanks for your comment! I never had the Volca Beats. The Volca Sample can sound so powerful because of the analog isolator, an two band eq. Furthermore, the sample frequency is only 33 khz which gives it a bit of a lo-fi touch compared to PCs with good sound card, for drums I found the lower quality hardly to matter, though.

+Pico Ferret thank you! The volca beats has some merits but if you have the volca sample you'd hardly need it; the volca bass can do surprisingly many things for being that cheap so it's worth considering.

+Shimanski Beats Your volca bass sounds so much better than others I've heard. Did you mod it? Are you runnign it through any effects on the MicroBrute?
@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 8 жыл бұрын
+Jennifer Gwinn Thanks, no I didn't mod it, neither does it go through the Microbrute. It just gets some delay and reverb from the Lexicon MX200 (via aux send in the mixer). In this track I used it in a 2 osc + 1 mode, so the bass line runs on two slightly detuned oscillators, which makes it sound fatter. The higher pitch single note (that plays from the beginning) runs on a single osc.

thanks for your comment! Indeed, there's a mixer to which I connected the audio outputs of the Volcas and the Brute. The stereo out of the mixer was connected to a USB-audio interface and then recorded in a DAW (Cubase) - no post processing though.

@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for your comment! Never owned the Minibrute, but tested it extensively in the store. Has (besides small differences) the same synth engine, however 2 envelopes and a noise generator. Mini has an arpeggiator, Micro has a sequencer. All in all I considered the Micro the better deal for the money but both are great synths with a rough, analog character.

@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for your commment! It's a bit too long ago to remember exactly. But usually the Lexicon is connected to one aux channel on the mixer and adds a serial combination of subtle ping pong delay and reverb. In this case the Volca Bass signal is sent on the aux channel. The Microbrute signal gets some reverb from the Alesis QV2, also via an aux send channel on the mixer. Did you want some info on the sync, too?

is it possible to sync volca sample and microbrute without sq-1? if it's so, via midi, cv or what and how?
@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 8 жыл бұрын
+Rayhan Sudrajat you can sync the volcas with the microbrute by connecting them to the gate in. However, the Volca pulse code is on 8th notes so the microbrute in sync can only play 8th notes. That's why I use an external midi clock (from the old Electribe) as pace maker.
@RayhanSudrajat
@RayhanSudrajat 8 жыл бұрын
+Shimanski Beats thanks a lot mate! is there any other external midi clock besides electribe?
@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 8 жыл бұрын
most drum machines and grooveboxes with midi out should be able to send midi clock signals. DAWs also do the work. Furthermore you can buy pure midi clocks but IMO that's waste of money - unless in a Eurorack

How do you connect the volcás and the microbrute.? Perdón mi ignorancia.
@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 3 жыл бұрын
the volcas are connected to each other with the sync out/inputs. Both the Microbrute and the master volca receive midi clock from the electribe (not in picture). The electribe doesn't do anything else than running an empty pattern but providing the pace. If you use the Microbrute's sync in/out with the Volcas you can only play 8th notes so if you want it to play 16th notes, you need an external midi clock signal.

Newbie here..what is the difference between the volca sample and volca bass..and how would they be used in conjunction with the Arturia keyboard. Which one is making what sound? Thanks.
@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for your comment! The Sample is a sample player which means you can load a couple of custom sounds (like drums, vocal snippets, special fx or whatever you like). In this video the Sample plays the drum sounds. The Volca Bass is a synthesizer with which you can play a variety of synth sounds, mainly leads and bass sounds. In the video it plays the blip sound from the beginning plus the main bass line starting around 20 sec. The microbrute plays the lead sequence that is faded in at around 55 sec. As you can hear, the sound is constantly modulated in a number of parameters. Hope this answered your question.

Is the bass at the beginning (:20) the Volca Bass being sampled by the Microbrute?
@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for your comment! No, the Microbrute can't sample / play samples. The Volca Bass, with its three oscillators, however, allows to play up to three different sequences and sounds at a time. Or, as in my case: the high pitch sound in the beginning is one of the Volca Bass oscillators played by one of its sequencer tracks, the fatter bass sound starting at about 20 sec is two layered oscillators played by another sequencer track.
@deroden724
@deroden724 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry I meant sequenced not "sampled." So the Microbrute isn't sequencing the Volca? If not, I'm impressed because I have the Volca Bass but have not created anything as musical as that. I need to practice with it more :)
@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 7 жыл бұрын
The Microbrute sequencer plays only the Microbrute lead synth line. It's indeed the Volca's sequencer, however I can confess that I composed the sequence on the computer first (there's a DAW-version of that track) and then reproduced it with the Volca's step edit mode.

@ShimanskiBeats
@ShimanskiBeats 2 жыл бұрын
no, one Volca and the Microbrute get their midi clock signal from an old Korg Electribe; the other Volca gets the sync in from the first Volca. For some weird reason you cannot make the Microbrute play 16th notes if it's synced from the Volca

despite the size, they aren't really comparable. The highlights of the Microbrute IMO are the filter and the flexible, fat sounding analog oscillator. The Microfreak is very good at glitchy, harsh digital sounds and modulating soundscapes

@@ShimanskiBeats Ah fair play. MF digital? Thought it was analogue. Shows what I know! Nice vid by the way.

@@duketranslucent3rd thanks! The Microfreak has an analog filter (although not as beefy as the Microbrute's filter) but the rest, and most importantly, the oscillator section, is digital.

This sounds good! Sucks that you dropped the Volca Bass in your sound cloud version.

thanks for your comment. It was actually the other way round: I made the studio version first and the downsized version with the Volcas afterwards.

Love what you're doing, only thing that frustrates me about drum machines and such is they just don't have any human feel to them. They may be sampled sounds of real drums but they still sound mechanical. Real drummers put a little Fills in that make it sound different. Be glad when they can get a drum machine that can mimic a real drummer

thanks for your compliments! Well if one considers drum machines a replacement to live drummers (as they did in the 80s) the results will be disappointing - even "humanize effects" of contemporary DAWs don't deliver very realistic results. Howver, for electronic music the mechanical, machine-like effect is what's sought after, in particular if the sounds/samples have a strong unnatural and synthetic character.

It's just techno, not goa ... not trance.... Have you ever listening a trance set ??? But it is so cool. peace.

thanks for your comment! Well of course this is not a trance set with thick pads and fat gated lead sequences, that's not possible with so little gear. However for (pure) techno it's sequences are too melodic and goa: the second sequence (microbrute) has this psychedelic/oriental touch... Peace

I'd rather call it acid techno/house than Goa trance... it's not even 140bpm+ ;-)
