I debated going that same route with the 12900k and Z690 board. I think the timing of the purchase worked out well that the X670 is almost out and went with that. The future proof-ish addition of the PCI-E 5.0 m.2 slots and 2.5+10GbE ports won me over to the X670 side. I really love what AMD has been doing the last few years, and the fact that it is reasonable to believe that they will stick with the AM5 design for 4-5 years makes the board just a bit more valuable in my mind as an upgrade in 3 years only requires an new CPU, and maybe some ram depending on how far forward that leaps.

Having a mass amount of I/O and 10Gb + 2.5Gb Ethernet makes the $500 a little easier to swallow. But at that price, def should be including a USB with the drivers rather than a waste of polycarbonate. If I decide to go with Zen4+ or 3D V-Cache, this could be the board I go with. Couldn't care less about OC anyways. AMD is already pushing these CPU's to the hilt out of the box. I'd just enable the 105 watt eco mode TBH.

That or set a lower temp target. One guy set his to 85c and actually saw a TINY perf increase, though that could be just silicon lottery on his 7950. Either way if you don't happen to get a cpu near the bottom of the silicon lottery you shouldn't see any noteworthy loss to perf (0-3% is what I've mostly been seeing on reviews of the 105 eco mode).
@TheGameBench2 жыл бұрын
@@kaseyboles30 Ah... good point. I'd be curious to see how 10 degree drops down to 65 degrees would compare to the 110 eco mode. If I could limit it to 75 watts, with a lower hit to perf, that would be a much better solution.

Well the benchmarks are out today. As leaked, multicore and performance benchmarks check out. Performance for price is not bad at all... the question is whether one wants to jump into a generational dead end (14th gen will be new socket) and pay premium for it - I mean if you don't care about upgrading why not AM4? Would be cheaper and still provide ample performance and blow this out of the water. Admittedly AM4 motherboards are all kinda bad on I/O, whereas new Z chipset motherboards have superb I/O and sport Thunderbolt 4 ports (you might not care about port specifically but that's A LOT of bandwidth on separate controller to connect tons of USB peripherals...)

These new X670 boards use the Intel JHL8540 chip (which is a Thunderbolt controller) yet the ports are technically not TB4. There aren't many TB4 devices out (compared to the USB4-compatible TB3), but I still find it odd that these aren't "TB4 guaranteed" - do you think it's Intel politics, or just about time/money? The last X570 ProArt had TB4 certification.
@blkspade2310 ай бұрын
Yeah there effectively 2 things that make USB4 and TB4 different. Min spec feature set, and Intel certification. The former mostly comes down to PCIe tunneling for most people, while the latter is an additional check by Intel to use the Thunderbolt branding. That's both politics and money/time added to the process. This board is TB4 without being able to call it as such. The actual drivers in the OS even still refer to it as a TB controller. On AM4 only Asrock made the move to get 1 ITX-X570 board TB3 certified, while they had a 2nd ATX X570 that included TB3. It isn't called that on the box while it is on the product page. Referred to as Hyper USB-C on the box. I think very much that motherboard makers needed a way to offer the feature on AMD in a way they could market it, without having to pay Intel to call it Thunderbolt. So now we have an official USB4 spec that can be (but not always), equivalent to TB4 without the Tax. Gigabyte and Asus wouldn't release "TB" boards until the AM4 socket was effectively EOL. The X670 Proart was cheaper and more available than the X570 version.

Thanks for doing this. Always thoughtful and informative. I’m a ‘content creator’ but with quite different needs from those usually covered in this and similar reviews. I use large orchestral libraries to write music. These are best saved on fast NVMe drives and partially loaded into memory for real-time use. There are lots of ways of optimising a computer to get the best from limited resources, but ultimately, a fast multicore CPU, solid state drives and at least 64GB of RAM (128GB+ is better for large orchestral templates) are optimal. A powerful GPU is of limited use in this type of work. * The other essential attribute is silence - or as near to it as you can get. The last thing you want when trying to record or mix music in a studio is a computer doing impersonations of a household vacuum cleaner. Moving the computer away from the studio/control room to a quiet cupboard isn’t often a viable option and that’s why, after decades of using PCs, I am considering paying a ridiculous amount of money for a Mac Studio. I like PC’s and I like using Windows too, because I know what to do when things don’t work properly. However, builds like the one featured here make increasingly less sense to me. Here’s why: It doesn’t matter which CPU you choose, INTEL or AMD; to achieve the performance they offer you must supply them with masses of power and then spend good money trying to cool them down. It is the same with GPUs. Year on year the situation gets worse: more power and more cooling. It is nuts and, unless I have missed something, the only company that seems to be trying to buck this trend is Apple. An elegant solution to a problem is an efficient one and I don’t think that word can be applied to any of the more recent creator builds I see on line. Wish me luck with the Mac Studio. The only Apple product I have is a phone and I have figured that out so there is hope. 😉 *Worth noting that a company (GPU.Audio) are working on applications which redeploy GPU processing cores for audio processing. This is huge for people doing what I do.

Was always curious as to if there is any difference in gaming performance. I am not a fan of the appearance of the gaming boards, This board looks awesome. I only wish it had all the audio outs for 5x1 or 7x1 setup.
@highspeed_hula19382 жыл бұрын
No. You’d be good. The boards that are creators are going to have pretty much all the things you’d need. Keeping in mind that most people don’t OC the piss out of their CPU and stuff. The only thing I think this board is lacking that I physically wish it didn’t was the reset CMOS button. Instead they put a couple of use functions on the board that as a gamer I’d never touch. However… whether it be this AM5 board or the z690/790 variant you’ll be set.

what is not really clear to me ( which I've bought one of this) is why even if I connect an 8x pcie 3.0 on the second pcie slot the gpu got bifurcated... Like if the bandwidth is actually 24 pcie lanes 5.0 from my ryzen 9 7900x why asus won't simply allow the bus to use the correct lanes instead of trunk those? I mean if the 3rd pci-e got 4 lanes 4.0 isn't understandable that the bandwidth should make it work an 8x 3.0? I don't just understand this mechanism... In the previous model with the 5900x I didn't have this problem at all. I had fitted everything in the moba ... 3 m.2 and all the 3 slots, ofc there I can understand the gpu to go at 8x ... but on this moba I don't really understand this thing of the bifurcation is so strict restriction... I whish I can use an old BDM capture card which use 8x gen 3.0 on the 3rd slot but turns out I can't... and if I put that on the 2nd slot my gpu goes auto at 8x... I don't really understand. If the first two are 5.0 pci-e why doesn't that simply work at it full speed with the lower gen of pcie...

so for a liquid cooling loop without being able to adjust the pump speed, how big of a deal do you consider that? I would think for the money and design that should be able to be programmed in the curve...thoughts?
@Foxhood Жыл бұрын
This board allows you to control any pump with PWM/DC input. It defaults to 100% post CMOS reset as a precaution, but you can override it within the bios through the Q-Fan control panel and control it like you would a fan, curve and all.

Yeah I'm not seeing any features that this board brings to the table that have anything to do with artists. You'd get the same features (and maybe more) from just a regular board or a gaming-focused motherboard. The things that have influence on artists are the OS, the software they use and the hardware peripherals they use - none of which have anything to do with the motherboard ... other than _perhaps_ it having even more USB connectivity than usual so artists can plug in all kinds of devices, but again most things you can buy a regular/gaming motherboard can cope with fine. Just seems like this entire "ProArt" thing is nothing more than a gimmick and not worth the extra cost.
@theTechNotice2 жыл бұрын
100% get what you're saying and would kinda agree... I'd point out that not a lot of motherboards have 10Gbe built in that is a huge thing :)
@DavidStruveDesigns2 жыл бұрын
@@theTechNotice True, it is. But that's less of an artist thing, and more of a "this should be more commonplace on _all_ motherboards" sort of thing.
@Mirrormn2 жыл бұрын
There are three main distinguishing features: 1. 10Gbps ethernet. All the ~$300 X670 motherboards have 2.5 Gbps. Adding a 10Gbps PCIE card would cost ~$100, as the video mentions. 2. Displayport passthrough to USB-C. This is a killer feature for anyone who has a USB-C only monitor, like an LG Ultrafine 5k. Other motherboards only support this with an add-in card that costs $100+. 3. Two PCIE Gen 5 m.2 slots. Other X670 motherboards only have one. This isn't an issue right now, since there are no PCIE Gen 5 SSDs out yet, but if you're planning to use more than one of them, you would need a board to support that. So yeah, I think this board makes sense if you actually need 2/3 of those three things.
@DavidStruveDesigns2 жыл бұрын
@@Mirrormn But again, other than perhaps point 2 with the monitor support _none_ of these benefits have _anything_ specifically to do with _artists_ - and _that's_ who they're aiming at with this motherboard. They know artistic stuff tends to garner a higher price, so they're trying to fleece artists with crappy claims that this motherboard, above others, can help the artist in some unique way. That's just outright false. It feels dishonest and a bit too much like a scam for my liking. Besides, if you're an artist buying very expensive monitors or other peripherals, then you're probably going to just buy a more expensive, feature-rich motherboard any way along with other things like the more top-tier GPUs and CPUs. So again, pointless marketing by this company.
@Mirrormn2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidStruveDesigns Sure, I guess I would say this motherboard is more oriented towards "content creation" and video editing than drawing/digital art. The 10Gbps ethernet and PCIE Gen 5 slots would both be good for high-bandwidth video editing, storing footage, that kind of thing.

Wouldn't you agree the Intel version should have the W680 chipset that you can't buy anywhere? Does the X670v support team DDR5 ECC? The X570 was pretty crappy vs the Z690 one. But I decided for the hero in the end. Way more serious bord and accessories like the m.2 expansion and the demanded USB stick;) I got the Asus 10G for 70 Euros in addition. The new z790 boards don't have anything worth upgrading that I saw.

I am not a ´creator´, but for some reason this board is cheaper than many of the X670- E´ gaming´ motherboard alternatives from ASUS or other companies. Any reason NOT to go for this one?
@Foxhood Жыл бұрын
Not really. The ProArts just don't have the overclocking focus as the gaming boards and instead focuses on giving you features, connectors and being as reliable as it can be. Which arguably makes it way better for most users as few actually overclock and many can benefit from features like their PC's front USB-C connector turning into a power-brick for phones and laptops. That said i would ask: Do you need a X670e? Truthfully. The Chipset doesn't do anything for performance these days. They serve purely to provide more IO. As in connectors for NVMe drives, sata, usb, etc. If you don't plan to use all of it, you generally can go for a lower-tier chipset. Unless you really are adamant about wanting PCIe 5.0 slots.
