great video...thanks for the tip about the collapsed o ring in the bottom plastic jet...it was causing my carb issue....the o ring is well hidden, once i replaced it the mower ran great. thanks again.

Tecumseh vectored exhaust motors are nice when they run. They don't tend to leak oil around the filler tube but I have had problems with the sump gasket. On the other hand you can get the lower carb (bowl) assy for a little over 20 bucs and you get new primer and primer gasket (a coupla things that can cause you grief in rebuilding the carb) Nice job cleaning it up and excellent note about the carb cleaner fouling the seat. -mac the lawnmower guy in texas

Very nice video. Thanks for the great info. My riding mower has the older Tecumseh venturi Carb. It wouldn't start. So I fallowed your instructions and now it works, starts runs great on high RPMS & low RPMs , but dies out in the middle of throttle. Is it running to lean ?? Thanks
@sixtyfiveford10 жыл бұрын
Yes. These carbs are jetted to run very lean and any small amount of debris or varnish makes the issue worse. It may work it self out after running for a while but most likely not. The main jet would benefit from a thorough cleaning to remove any varnish/scum with a stiff wire.

thanks for the show! but i am still frustrated. the damn o ring on the venturi stem whatever was goey on mine once carb cleaner touched it it was a mass of goo! I had to chekc wiht straigh acetone to see if that was the proboem. does the rebuild kit come with the o ring? you didnt mention putting a new one on. I wonder if its essential for running. i had no idea there was a jet on otherside of spring. mine never came out.but then again this was b4 finding your video.

I hate those carbs. I'm working on 1 now. Thanks for the videos
@sixtyfiveford8 ай бұрын
These are not great at all. The biggest thing is you need to make sure all the o-rings are not dissolved/swollen.
@eyesonthefly7 жыл бұрын
where does that throttle hook up to? can you show the assembly at that part? my mower wont start and I already cleaned the carb and checked for spark, so don't know why it aint starting.

Cool, that beats the old tecumesh carbs where the bowel gets corroded. I have never seen a tecumesh carb like that on a lawnmower. What kind of mower was it and or engine model?
@bigraider5307 жыл бұрын
I have a MTD mower with a 5.5HP Tecumseh VLV55 model motor. It has this style carb hence why watched this vid for rebuild tips.

i wish they had manuals on this engine. oh but mune has a choke. i am curious to see if i can get cleaner to shoot out of little brass hole after i pull main jet nexttime im home. I had sicked on venturi stem without getting fuel. its carb i know because i put gas on aircleaner and starts right up
@sixtyfiveford11 жыл бұрын
The orings are generic and usually you can find them at a local auto parts store. As far as a rebuild kit goes, they may or may not come with them.

Great video! I replaced a leaking carb but the new one is running lean and backfires slightly. Weird part is the old carb now runs lean as well. Any ideas? Should i drill out the jet or adjust the float? Not sure if I can adjust the float.
@sixtyfiveford5 жыл бұрын
Check for an intake manifold to carb gasket leak. Air could be entering after the carb and messing up your ratio.
@johnlibonati78075 жыл бұрын
@@sixtyfiveford Good point. I'll check. I tried running on half choke but didn't seem to make much of a difference. This would explain it. Thanks!

@@johnlibonati7807 I like to use #2 gasket sealant on all my gaskets like this that I reuse(and new sometimes). It is like a thin tar substance and never hardens so it cleans off easily when you take it apart in the future.

I believe the part being called the venturi is actually called a nozzle in the parts manual.

Is there a certain direction that the tube in the center of the bowl should be turned.bought a new carburetor and still cant seem to get it to run.started it up ,it idled for couple minutes then once I tried to drive the mower ,it shut off and wouldn't crank
@sixtyfiveford5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter. More than likely you had contaminated fuel from the line/gas tank plug up your new carb.
@jeremymatthews16578 жыл бұрын
I have one of these carbs that is giving me trouble too. It just won't suck up fuel Into the intake Iv had the whole carb apart. And checked and cleaned every thing. Float and needle are fine but venturie has a damaged O ring, the one that's on the bottom the only one lol. Main jet seems to be clean and carb is filling up so fuel line is fine. What else can I do ?
@sixtyfiveford8 жыл бұрын
The most common clog point is through passage behind the main jet. So removing the large screw from the outside of the bowl, and inserting the nozzle of carb cleaner through this: should allow you to spray up into the throat of the carb.

Hi thanks for video, where did you buy the Seat for the Float valve? I have been looking but have not found a source.

It's easier to find with the needle and seat as a combo. Tecumseh 631021 63102163 631021

Thanks for the response, I see them on Ebay looks like they must use the seat and plunger on many of the carbs. Do you know how much travel the float should have? I have a 20 HP Tecumseh Engine Twin Model TVT691 Spec: 600810B that will only run with the choke on. I cleaned the carb with no help, however I noticed that the float has very little travel and keeps the valve closed, almost like the seat is to high in the channel. Wonder if new seats will help. Any suggestions?
@sixtyfiveford8 жыл бұрын
Running only on choke means the main jet is clogged. The float level is not adjustable on these but if the float level is minimal the seat is swollen and needs to be replaced. The original seats hate ethanol laced fuel and will swell to the point of closing off the fuel flow.
@phoenixrising26458 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, you are very helpful. I installed new seat today and indeed the floats have much better travel. Your wood screw trick work perfectly. Interesting the channel with the tinny brass orifice directly next to the main big hole, you spray it at 3 min :57 sec in your first video, was solid with crud. I was able to open the channel using a 26 gauge wire. I am not sure if I have it completely opened. I can fit a 22 gauge wire through the hole in the orifice, however it will not continue down the channel. Not sure if there is still crud in the channel, I was wondering on a clean carb like yours, do you think the channel is at least as wide as the orifice opening? The crud is very hard and I don't want to put to much pressure if the channel is not suppose to be that wide. Thanks again for the help.

Test it by forcing carb cleaner through it. If you get a good stream it's clear.
@franaphonic8 жыл бұрын
is the float suppose to move easily? I took mine out and after I snapped it back in the float didn't seem to move.
@sixtyfiveford8 жыл бұрын
Yes, the float should fall and raise under it's own weight.

I always just replace the plastic bowl after I clean them once and they still don't work. Have any suggestions for after cleaning it really good, if it still runs badly? Where is this carbs "secret" passage that gets clogged? By the way, the star shaped ends on the bolts can be turned with a very small socket (I think 5/32.)
@sixtyfiveford10 жыл бұрын
If after I have cleaned it and I know for sure all the passages flow carb cleaner nicely I determine what is causing my bad running. If it surges then the idle passage is dirty and I clean the top half better. If it runs rough and putting the choke on or partially covering the intake with my finger make it run better I know that the main jet is my culprit... In the case of the main jet I drill it out ever so slightly. I think the ethanol is slowly swelling these jets causing their hole to get smaller. I use a micro drill bit set from Harbor Freight.

Starts like a Tecumseh.... Pull it three or four times it might start
@Mr_Tecumseh7 жыл бұрын
These vector carbs were the worst carbs that were ever put on a Tecumseh. They are a really crappy design and you can tell from all the complaints about people having issues with them. Thank God they did not put this carburetor on my Craftsman Tractor's Tecumseh formula engine. Mine has the good old round metal float bowl one and my engine runs good. Every video on youtube about a Tractor with a Tecumseh with that vector carb runs poorly. I haven't seen to many videos of the slightly older ones like my formula with the better style carb and my engine came with a backup recoil started besides the electric start, so I do not need a battery to operate my tractor. It is a nice feature that Tractor and the engine had the works.
@sixtyfiveford7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, not Tecumseh's shining moment trying to compete with the plastic carbs Briggs was using to save a buck. I'm glad they only used them for a few years.
