McMahon broke kayfabe the most when he declared wrestling all sports entertainment around 1989. Made everyone say "I told you wrestling was fake". Hated it.

Actually the biggest kayfabe breaker was Jack Pfefer in 1934 when he gave an interview to a New York newspaper, explaining in detail how pro wrestling works. That was the day newspapers stopped treating wrestling like a proper sport and the whole business went down the drain for a decade.

At the end of the day, Vince gave the Kliq the greenlight to go out there to do the Curtain Call. Vince didn't have the backbone to tell Shawn "no" and Hunter took all the heat after Vince saw the negative reaction from the agents, Bruce, Corney and the boys. Wouldn't have been the big deal it became imo had it not been recorded by a fan and distributed amongst the tape traders. It was a smart mark NYC house who knew Razor and Diesel were leaving for WCW. Kayfabe meant nothing to that kind of crowd.

Vince didn’t even knew about the curtain call until someone show the footage or photos to vince. But wwe in 94 through middle of 97 when stone cold Steve Austin was about to be the top guy during his run as intercontinental champion heading into the end of 97

How is this a slap in the face to Vince? Vince was the one who spilled the beans about the truth of professional wrestling in the 80s in order to save some money and not be regulated as a sport. People who perform in plays get to do the curtain call every night to an applauding audience even if they played an evil person. I really think it would be awesome to boo someone like Ted DiBiase while he is cheating to win be be able to applaud him for an amazing performance at the end of the night.

If the business was up or down, either way the agents and promotions that are wrestling, have a mantra of keeping the idea of good vs evil. If u book a wrestling event, regardless if the opponents are friends or just friendly with each other, it’s a big no-no regardless if the talent gets mad. In any line of work, u go, do the job and u leave. If they (any company)say, something is a no-no, then respect it and don’t cross it. Something the kliq didn’t want to do

I was thinking how everybody is always saying how the finger poke of Doom, the WWF's "Invasion" story line, WWF's purchase of WCW, Benoit's tragedy and CM Punk's UFCs' ass whoopin' could be what killed pro wrestling, but did they really? Maybe the curtain call is what killed pro wrestling.

Except that they went to Vince and specifically asked him if he was ok if they did it. He was. They did it. The funny thing is: Wrestling fans back then didn't care. If anything, most (rec.sport.pro-wrestling) thought it was a great gesture. It wasn't until 2000 that this blew up and all the marks, including Meltzer suddenly made a big thing out of it.

Bullshit Austin would have shone through regardless. I remember seeing him as the ring master and man did he stand out head and shoulders over everyone else. I couldn't wait to see him again and he wasn't on tv that much at first but I fucking loved him. He was tough and amazingly technical and had a style that was cool to me. I was a believer ie most of these guys are fake but Austin is the real deal that guy would fuck you up.

Austin was boring as The Ringmaster and got no reaction from the crowd. Even as Early Stone Cold in 1996 he got no reaction. He didn't start getting decent reactions until 1997.

Especially since Austin was booked surprisingly bad after winning the King of the Ring. He was left off the SummerSlam and had numerous losses (albeit mostly by DQ) to Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and Marc Mero, as well as losing all No. 1 Contendership Battle Royales. Even in December he still was booked badly, losing to two jobbers (Eddie Jackie and Jason Ahrndt) on Superstars. It wasn't until 1997 that he finally got pushed toward the Main Event.
