After more than two decades as an anchor for ABC News, an on-air panic attack sent Dan Harris's life in a new direction: he became a dedicated meditator and, to some, even a guru. But then an anonymous survey of his family, friends and colleagues turned up some brutal feedback -- he was still kind of a jerk. In a wise, funny talk, he shares his years-long quest to improve his relationships with everyone (starting with himself) and explains the science behind loving-kindness meditation, and how it can boost your resiliency, quiet your inner critic and simply make you more pleasant to be around.

Agreed. My personal experience of my Know Thyself journey over 30 years has resulted in concluding my self hatred, buried deep in my subconscious, developed from many traumatic experiences (people being unloving towards me) through childhood, was the primary cause of the numerous soul wounds and dysfunctions I unconsciously developed and suffered from till resolving them all during my 40s. ( some of the main ones: Major and Endogenous Depression, an anxiety disorder, an inferiority complex, repeated suicial thoughts since the age of 7...all wonderously fully resolved at age 47). This bloke is expressing the same thing I discovered, that self love is the key to resolving your soul issues, soul issues that cause you to be unloving towards yourself and others. Something I read decades ago - "Hurting people, hurt others." I interpret to mean, when you're hurting, driven by pain, you lash out at the world, typically anyone in your vicinity, be it yourself or others. And by self-love I mean this definition of love - To do your best for someone because you deeply value them, and to do so with compassiona and understanding. I realised in my early 20's that I knew so little of myself, but I was keeny aware I was severely messed up. So I began the long journey inward to discover as much as I could about myself, to increase understanding and possibly resolve my inner turmoil. What I learnt along the way was shame, guilt and self-condemnation (elements of self-hatred) hinders the development and healing process, thus realising self-love (compassion and understanding) was the way to go. "If you want to follow me to freedom, be prepared to swim upstream, against the river of conditioning. Be prepared to grapple continuously with the fierce flow of negative mental currents. In time our strokes will become effortless and our sense of purpose irresistible." - Buddha "True love is born from understanding." - Buddha "You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection." - Buddha "By attempting to avoid the responsibility for our own behavior, we are giving away our power to some other individual or organization. In this way, millions daily attempt to escape from freedom." - M. Scott Peck "There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious." - Carl Jung "We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses." - Carl Jung "Eventually, meditation will make our mind calm, clear, and as concentrated as a laser which we can focus at will. This capacity of one-pointed attention is the essence of genius. When we have this mastery over attention in everything we do, we have a genius for life itself: unshakable security, clear judgment, and deep personal relationships ( especially the one we can have with ourselves)." - Eknath Easwaran "Mindfulness ( my preferred form of Meditation) refers to keeping one's consciousness alive to the present reality. It is the miracle by which we master and restore ourselves." - Thich Nhat Hanh "The greatest of all faults is to be conscious of none. Recognizing our limitations and imperfections is the first requisite of progress. Those who believe they have arrived believe they have nowhere to go. Some not only have closed their minds to new truth, but they sit on the lid." - Dr. Dale E. Turner "There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life." - John Lennon

'Self love, properly understood, as having your own back, is not selfish' This is beautiful. Others often asked how I could still be nice even with rude people, and since I can't properly express it I just said 'because I can afford to do it'. And that's why I can afford it: because I have my own back by hugging my own demon, so I could do it to other's demon as well. Brilliant TED talk 👍

Over the past couple of years, Dan Harris has been one of my most positive influences. I started using his Ten Percent Happier app after reading his book of the same title. Some people mastered sourdough bread making: I meditated, listened to podcasts, and applied mindfulness whenever possible. I’ve meditated daily for over two years now, without fail, and it’s the good habit that I acquired that helped me through the pandemic with most of my sanity intact. Glad you’re not a jerk any more, Dan, and thanks for sharing.

Dan is right, it is a skill to love oneself. What you have to do is work: face fears, face being uncomfortable, face difficulties you have run away from your whole life. It takes a decision to stop being a jerk to one self. This time not alone.

I have to say that I'm very happy that Mr. Harris has continued on his journey and is sharing it. Years ago I was skeptical and ignored him but hearing this talk makes me feel he is the type of person/people we need to be the new gurus in the 21st. century. Relatable people in and somewhat 'of' the world, for that is where life happens. I agree, love is the only thing that can save the world. Reason without love/compassion is dry and can become cruel and inhuman. Good on you Mr. Harris.

Forever grateful to you, Dan. You got me back into meditation when I had given it up for good and never wanted to try it again. You made it accessible and easy to connect with mostly because you spoke so bravely about your own experience. It makes me smile whenever I hear you say: this is something I never wanted to do or I rejected that immediately. Only to open up a bit later and give it a try anyway. That is so helpful. I recently started a practice of “noticing”. I set a monastery bell timer to go off every 15 minutes. (I think it’s a plum village app). I stop, inhale and exhale once. Then ask myself “who’s here right now”? Then answer myself: “[angry, depressed, responsible, thinking] Carlos is here”. Then, if “angry me” is here. I respond with: “that’s ok, let him talk. Nobody heard him when he was a small boy and hurting”. It’s amazing this “noticing practice has improved my productivity, decreased my debilitating depression, and anxiety.

Brilliant TED talk 👍 so natural, engaging and thought provoking. It reminded me of my own journey 6-7 years ago when I went through a very painful mid-life crisis that lasted 12-18 months which completely overhauled my life. In my darkest days, learning how to self love (for the first time in 46 years in 2015!?) was the key to my recovery and leading a blissful life now. Everything you said was completely on-point 👍 I practice self-love every single day even if I have to say no to loved ones because the only person who really and properly looks after me is me ..and yes, I managed to find my heart which was buried away in so much external crap that we take to heart..I now have a great heart and brain connection..start and finish with you 👍

This was a delightful talk. I think while we are taught to be kind to others which is extremely important, we're not taught to be kind to ourselves with the same vigour and passion. Most of us never learn to love ourselves and we're overly critical and outright mean in our self assessments. It's even more true for children who're raised in unhealthy, chaotic and abusive homes. The positivity to be derived from this is that it's always possible to start on your journey of self kindness and to extend the same kindness to others as well.

Wonderful! I love Dan! He is real and I use the 10 percent happier app. Wisdom here. One of the biggest obstacles to our inner growth is an honest and clear acceptance of ourselves in total: the good and not so good and the shadow; and then to learn to accept others for theirs. Like the saying goes "Friends are people who know you really well and like you anyway" ...this includes ourselves.

My inner critic is indeed an AH, and I definitely need to give myself a break. I can see how doing that can also lead to being less critical of others, which I'm expert at. Ultimately, my opinion of another person doesn't actually matter to my life or theirs.

Doing this 8 min into the talk I almost immediately cried. Alone fighting your own battles doesn't mean alone if you got your own back and are "active in your own rescue." I have been shielded from learning all this sort of stuff and became a horribly self hating person while loving and gentle and understanding BOTH since my youth. Since leaving all my family and friends I am on a solo journey to find everything useful to a happy life. Medicinal herbs for proper self care in the kitchen (ginger for nausea). Repeating the same goals and I am statements at bed time and when I wake up. Ice cold baths. Anything that is useful. Philosophy, Buddhist, and well being positive quotes from notible wise people. Anything and everything. This talk adds to that very well. "Worry not for tomorrow. You will face it with the same tools you have that arm you against today." I hope to eradicate the self hatred in me. I'm hard on myself but like he said... it can be a positive driving inner life coach rather than a spiraling negative flogging.

We have to love and appreciate ourselves because if we don't then other people won't do that. It's also utterly significant to value your own efforts. Sometimes, I tend to condemn myself for not studying so badly or underrate my knowledge. Then I realize I am being a jerk to myself. In such cases, I tell myself there is no need to be so strict with your own self. You have not done something today, you will do it tomorrow. Live and soak up your life. Life is not all about studying. You won't miss anything out if you don't study for one day. Those words help me to calm down and not to get myself down.

Thank you for your vulnerability. Having my own workplace appraisal, it is hard to hear all your flaws and failures and still feel worthy. I do the opposite of taking it out on others, I become anxious instead and self flagellate. I agree with the summation that our social fabric is unraveling. The never enough-ness and always behind-ness societal pressures are the catalysts for mental health burnouts and breakdowns.

I did immediately applied and got results from Dan Harris's process he explains at 10:20 in this talk. He recommends doing it for 4 people. I did it for 10 people in my life. I immediately felt a lot better and calmer and peaceful. I wrote down the process on a 2 inch post-it note and put it on my calendar for reminders to repeat it.

Wow, this video was incredibly eye-opening! I've always believed that being kind to others is important, but Dan Harris's talk made me realize just how crucial it is to be kind to ourselves too. The idea that we can actually rewire our brains through meditation and self-compassion is truly amazing. I can't wait to start implementing these techniques in my own life. Thanks for sharing this inspiring talk!

Notes. May you be happy, safe, healthy, and live with ease. Generate warmth with full sentences. Conjure image and send phrases to: Easy person or pet, yourself, mentor, neutral, difficult, then all beings everywhere. Consciously counter program against inner critic. And when you feel yourself spiraling, but your hand on your heart and speak to yourself like a good friend or supportive coach instead of a sadistic inner tyrant. Amazing talk. Thanks
