People complain about her take on the sky is crying not having enough vibrato, not big enough bends, not enough emotion etc. Please remember: This song was played by alot of the greats, but the version we always think of is Albert King's, one of the best bluesmen in history. I love Susan and she's a great blues player, but comparing her to Albert is just not fair. Alberts very simply and basic solos could rival Dereks mastepiece solos on pure emotion, it's just not fair to compare anyone to Albert really.

I heard a lot.of basic Albert in her playing but yes, you are correct. No one should be compared to Albert, no one did it better. Albert's solos may be simpler in theory but not in execution. Albert could do Hendrix-y things but Hendrix couldn't do Albert. Susan is phenomenal here though.

Her playing would be greatly enhanced by some vibrato (with her hand, not the amp or a pedal, just to be clear).

+beldar123 Most women have bad vibrato. It's just that their hands aren't very strong. That's my theory anyway. Also I think Susan keep her middle finger too elevated when she gets on the lower strings. She's still a great singer and writer though. She also has good note choice. It's just that she can't milk it with her hands good enough.

I love it when people critique blues playing as "sloppy". "Sloppy" gave birth to the blues and will always remain at it's heart. It's not a classical arrangement, it's a visceral conversation rooted in emotion, imperfection is it's perfection.

enzomatic Then you'll love this, too. She is passable as a guitar player but she's not a great guitar player. She is a much better singer than player. And she is sloppy on occasion...meaning she misses notes and loses the tempo. Facts are facts.

Everyones a critic. It's the fuckin' blues, and not meant to be PERFECT. She's got more soul in her little pinky than you'll ever have. Why? Because she'd never be so rude as to say something so mean spirited to anyone getting their groove on. Some dudes just can' t handle a woman doin' it better than they can.
