I drove some of the Bundeswehr-G-classes, with same engine and same transmission, during my military service. To deal with the weak engine power output, when accelerating a bit faster from a stand, you need to bring up the engine rounds per minute during acceleration in first gear to approximately 4600-4900 rpm (no problem for these engines - power needs in this case higher rpm), before you shift quick to second gear and do the same in that gear. So you get much (!) better acceleration. If I remember right: some of these engines are made to be reved a bit above 5000 rpm, if wanted. It doesn't hurt an healthy OM602. But reving above 4900 rpm makes no sense, because power decreases between 4900-5100 rpm. Without indicator for rpm in the dash (which is normal for this model) you need to exercise your ears for the correct shift-timing, so that you are able to hear from sound of engine rpm when its time to shift in next gear. G-class is an solid car, except potential rust problems, these models share with other old cars from that time.

I am not a G-specialist, but on the non mil ones (and this one looks like a previous mil one) the backdoor opens the other way on left hand drive ones. The idea behind it is that the open rear door blocks the street side, not the sidewalk side. And left hand drive cars usually drive on streets where the sidewalk is on the right side. Mil ones i am not sure, because there it's less of an issue as those see more offroad than most private ones. And offroad you don't need easy access to the sidewalk. And of course i am interested in a G-video. they were/are built less than 20 minutes from where i live.
