I've driven my 2023 Honda Civic Type R over 12,000 miles since December 2022. This is what I've learned about the car. There's a lot to love but it's not all perfect. There are some frustrations with the FWD King of the Ring.

Hey man, Honda service advisor here. I know this is going to sound stupid as hell haha, but some coworkers and I have somewhat found a fix for the crazy Apple CarPlay communication issue. I have a hatch sport touring 6spd myself so we have the same system and it worked for mine too.. so, if you have an apple phone, that’s usually where the issues lie, bc it’s an android unit in the car. If you have a friend or family member that has an android phone, have them connect their phone to android auto in your vehicle, then disconnect it and connect yours. Somehow this causes the communication issue to stop. I’ve seen it work multiple times now, makes zero sense, but it works. Worked for my personal car too. Had a 24 accord come in this week with the exact same issue, and it solved it. Let me know if this works for you!

@@TedwardDrivesHappy I can hopefully help, been a fan of your channel for some years now haha, and I very much so get how annoying it is when the infotainment decides to have a mind of its own. I’ll also say, make sure you’ve got an actual apple cord, that can also cause strange communication issues if it’s a random one from a gas station or something. If neither of those help, I’d take it to the dealer you purchased from, and tell them you’ve tried both of those things already to stop them from saying “well we’ll look at it but do these things first.” There have been a few cases where we had to replace the whole radio unit, under warranty of course. It’s unfortunately a very strange system, in that it works great most of the time, but on the event that it decides that it wants to go nuts, it’s always a situation.

@@SLOK20C2hey, so I have a 23 civic sport and it does not have wireless apple CarPlay and android auto, and I sometimes experience the same issues with the CarPlay, whether that’s the phone not connecting without me having to unplug it and plug it back in, sometimes multiple times, to the car just not displaying a map untill I physically open the app on my phone. Would there be a similar fix you have for this, or is it just an issue that wired connections have?

Up until now, nothing wrong (other that the Tesla going like 180kph on a 90kph road with speed cameras), anyway, the driver's realized the should've taken an exit they missed, so they didn't signal, and just cut EVERYONE off, I saw the car jumping on the barrier (it was very low but dangerous as f***). If I'm not mistaked actually Tedward has a video where a Tesla does a similar thing. It was kinda like that.

Having a sports car and then having something like a Lexus to drive in bad conditions or just completely relax in is the ultimate. Thanks for this great drive through the Boston area.

Love the honest review! Truthfully one of the main reasons I got rid of my Accord Sport 2.0T was because of the glitchy infotainment system. I would get the black screen all the time and CarPlay would disconnect daily. The engine was the absolute best part of that car, which is even more entertaining in the CTR. I now have an Elantra N and although it too has some quirks, it’s been a fantastic daily and has less issues than the Accord did. The CTR is such an amazing car though - maybe some day I’ll get the opportunity to drive one.

@@trashbandit2449 The tank capacity is 12 gallons, but once the fuel gauage hits 0 miles to empty, you have one gallon left, thus a useable capacity of 11 gallons. Nice, informative review. My 2023 CTR is domiciled here in rural New Mexico above 6,600 feet elevation. Has 1,700 miles on it and 18” all seasons for the winter, including a spare tire. For road trips to metro area (200 miles) and driving in very remote areas I drive my 2022 GX460 which I recommend highly for its reliability and performance. The CTR and the Gx460 are the best combo for my situation, the CTR a joy for local drives to county seat and the Lexus for when the going gets tough. I too, prefer to not subject the Type R to wintry conditions especially when I have the best alternative tool available. Thanks again for fun video.

you might be the first youtuber i’ve heard talk about the small gas tank because its one of those daily driving annoyances i have with the car. i drive my fk8 around 15k miles per year and its crazy how often im at the gas station. i know its a civic and compact cars have smaller gas tanks but this car is barely compact… it matters less when the regular and si can get 40+mpg. and i don’t think it’s for the purpose of an illusion because the accord has a bigger tank

I definitely feel you on the scratched trim. Yeah it's just a car, but if it is a car you love, it can sting to have something like that happen, even if it's not your fault. I had my IS 500 in the shop for a minor dent repair on the rear fender, and they scuffed the heck out of my driver's side interior rear door panel as well, not to mention the inside of the C-pillar. It looks bad. But luckily, I won't have to look at that while driving. :D It still sucks to know it is there, but oh well. I didn't buy it to make it a museum piece.

The GX is solid, you know that Topher had a good experience with his and you get some nice luxury with normally rock solid Toyota engineering. We had a 2011 that we named Betty White cause we figured it would Never die. Well Betty passed and then the trans starting slipping and solenoids went out. Traded it and moved on. Pros to the GX: silky V8 with good power and tq, nice interior, finally they fixed the crap infotainment. Cons: gas mileage, short wheel base can sometimes hurt the ride. I like to experience different vehicles so I probably wouldn’t buy another. But for winter it would have been great to have, btw, I grew up in central NY and lived the snow, our experiences with the GX was TX

I have a separate daily, but if you do the math, it will probably cost you less to keep putting miles on the Civic. Take whatever you would spend carrying the winter car and put it in a simple mutual fund. You will be way ahead of the incremental costs, depreciation, etc. you incur by using the CTR all year. Now, if you want an SUV simply because you want it, then go for it. Just recognize it will probably cost, not save, you money.

Now 7k miles in and i think its the best daily for a car enthusiast. Plus if i really want i can get 34 mpg out of it. Looks also nice next to my s2k

The stock tires were on my GR86 premium when a ice storm hit; then dropped slick snow on top of that. Lovely that Michigan did not drop any salt at all (real wtf moment as the storm was on the radar for over 24 hours). I struggled to get up a like 10 degree incline, and a guy got out of his car and helped push my vehicle up that small incline!! Winter tires are a non-negotiable! Ha!

I got a 2024 rav4 and I run into some issues with CarPlay as well. The same problem you went through where your phone was connected to your CarPlay but it was playing through the phone and not through the car. Totally different car from your review video, but it was good to know that I’m not the only one!

I have really enjoy your video here. I especially appreciate your closing comments about having lower stress fun. Not so expensive, just a Civic, etc.. Sort of Miata-like. Easy. I am weighing this and a Cayman (among others). Which would I worry about more? I’m 58 and can do the wing. Damn the critics.

I really wanted a Type R. Ended up with a 22 wrx limited instead because type r prices were nuts when I was in the market. After I got the wrx tuned it’s been a blast though and scratches the urge. For now.

Fun fact. The shift knob used in this series of Type-R is the exact same shape and dimensions of the shift knob used in Ayrton Senna's early 90's McLaren F1 cars before McLaren switched to a sequential paddle shift gearbox's. If anyone is wondering where Honda got that gear knob shape from for this car.

Highly recommend doing a partial roof kit on ur car. For whatever reason that car loves to get chipped on the roof. I did it on my car and have no regrets spending the money to know my roof won’t get destroyed

Great video man! I have an integra type s and have the same issues as you with CarPlay. Sometimes turning the wifi on and off which resets the connection fixes it. Other times I have had to reset the infotainment by holding a few buttons on the head unit. I can’t stop driving it too, I got it September and have 7500 miles already.

Im glad you made an update video to the type R. Ive commented before i currently have, A chevvy ss auto and a hyundai accent. But before that i had a 2016 mustang ecoboost manual that was an electrical lemon. And the motor blew at 33k. One time on the highway a ground cable became unhooked and all the dash lihts came on the sync headunit turned off and the headlights dimmed and the electric steering failed. 😅

I love the look of the 11th gen, less riced and looks more of a "sleeper" (which I prefer) , nice video I agree with most of the stuff you said. I have a 2018 Si as my only car, already have 114k miles on it ( I also live in boston area and commute), however its so fun and although I can't afford another more expensive car yet, I feel safe knowing what im driving is similar to a normal civic, the reliability is what attracted me, my last civic had 260k before it had a misfire! I like driving my car, often after work I take the long way and rip backroads, I feel like I shouldn't be scared to do that. Sure they (probably) don't make them as good as they used to, but for now its great. Something else I like to tell myself, it would be great to get really good at driving this car with low power , And years down the road (when I can afford) something more powerful with a manual. Btw no heated seats is a shame, even mine has that 🙁

Thanks for the video. I own an FL5 and a 981GT4. If you think the rev match is as good on the Honda, you need to drive a Porsche again. There's no contest. The Porsche rev match responds much more rapidly and with no rev hang.

I love how distracted you get ❤. lol I’m like that too when I’m trying to get to my destination, I understand that it’s a CTR and that we finally got the forbidden fruit here in U.S. and people don’t want to stack miles on it, I get that. But it’s a drivers car meant to be appreciated for what it is and what it does. I would put a whole lot of miles on it and not feel guilty about it because I know that with every mile I’m either happy or seeing new places.

If I had to guess, the trend toward smaller fuel tanks is so you're not lugging around more fuel, hurting fuel economy. In the case of the Civic, they probably just made the tradeoff since they will make so few Type-Rs in the grand scene of all the the other economical trims.

29 mpg is good. I live on the highway in mine and I get like 27. You’re so lucky you don’t have any rattles and issues like that. Those are the only issues I’ve had with the car is interior rattles/squeaks/buzzing/ and my driver window vibrates. (Not sure if that’s from turbulence or bumps or both)
