Most humans naturally pick up social cues. The silence is uncomfortable because we can tell that Maisie expects that her audience will find what she's saying funny. When they don't respond, we empathize with her and we feel the awkwardness we think she may have felt based on how awkward we would feel for ourselves. That said, that doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with people who don't pick up on that. You, for example, were focused on the actual contents of her speech. And that's totally ok

@Cillit Bang You think she's a multi-millionaire? You might want to get in touch with reality, they'd like a word with you. ;-) Yes, she got a lucky break, as do many others, but the point is if you do go for those initial chances and opportunities then you are never going to get the chance of a lucky break. You have to take the first step, not wait for it to drop in your lap. Having that break is only the start, talent is what has kept her there. It's also easy to bang on about it when you're bitter about not getting a break.

Also, just because they get paid what seems to be a lot, they also have to pay out for agents, management, publicists and all the other people attached to doing that job, never mind all the other costs associated with that life. It's likely that she's been paid enough to make it into a multi-million figure in total earnings but once you cater for costs she isn't worth multi-millions, therefore she isn't a multi-millionaire.

good speech by this girl. She´s so right in many things she has said. The last-minute is by far the best part of the whole video, because that message related to "trust you are good enough" is really key to keep on working every day, to have something that encourages you to be better. Thanks Maisie.

I saw this live and it taught me that all you need is an idea. And a big pot of money from your Emmy-nominated acting career. And a friend with a big pot of money from years of successful business ventures. With just those three things, you too can set up a company, get offices in Shoreditch, employ some staff and release an app.

And Arya Stark takes the Iron Throne! Of all the big names on that show, it was one of the youngest and brightest cast members without any previous credits to her name to get up onstage for this kind of talk. She's a breath of fresh air for any of us creative types who struggle to find our way and often lose sight of how it's not the destination that matters as much as the journey to get there. I can't wait to see how her career as a creative human being unfolds. Valar dohaeris!
