Racism in South India is no different from North India. A young boy from Shilong came to work in Coimbatore for his living. He was a hairdresser in Naturals. He seemed very stressed and silent so my friend and I decided to talk to him since we knew he has come from far away and has no one to talk to(we had talked to other NE hairdressers for the same reason, every NEhairdresser we have talked to had similar issues but this one was extreme). Initially, he wasn't answering much but later he trusted us and told us everything that he has faced until now. An old lady who cleans the floor calls him mental. He was beaten up by his manager. He only eats once a day and he didn't get his pay for the past few months. After all this conversation the old lady came from another room and told me to stay away from him because he is mental and not to believe anything he said.

This brought back so many memories, spent 8 years in New Delhi, met the most amazing as well as the most scary people. As a northeastern sister to all my brothers and sisters from north east, please make friends outside of your circle too. I met my best friends from Delhi, kerela and UP from work place and apartment building. Greet that uncle/bhaiya/aunty who's shop you frequent everyday, talk to them. Be respectful and mindful of their culture and they will respect you too. I say this because we don't do this at all, and often times we are defenseless and have no one on our side. Racism is unfortunately everywhere. We are victims as well as the perpetrators and that is the sad truth.

I have been to Arunachal pradesh, the day i went there to give a state gov exam the examiner said! you won't get selected because you are not from northeastern. I enquired in the department and there were south Indians who weren't given a single promotions in 20 years. Even the arunachal college friend (studied with me in TN) said i should go there as i will face discrimination. This was really heartbreaking

Everywhere adverts for skin whitening creams. Fair skin considered beautiful and dark skin undesirable. It’s so bad that even parents discriminate their own children with dark skin 🙁
