Very interesting to see Tesla's approach to the solar canopy design. It's something I hadn't expected given their usual limited design. By limited, I mean they normally only bother to cover the area immediately above parking spaces. It does seem a bit over engineered though. Could it be something to do with strength of the wind in this locale? Either way, it's good to see and I will be keen to see if they expand right across their outdoor parking, storage, and freight areas; there's HUGE potential for clean, reliable on-site renewable electricity generation. Tesla makes a big deal out of using 100% renewable electricity at its supercharging stations, some self-generated, the rest from PPA's from renewables generators. But for the life of me, I (cannot) understand why they continually & unfathomably fail to do the obvious and make full use of their often gargantuan sites by generating more of their own electricity from wind & solar, particularly solar + storage. There HAS to be several GW of untapped ⚡ generation capacity & storage going to waste across their entire property portfolio. If I were a shareholder, I'd be wanting to know why. Paying out good money to others for electricity that could otherwise be self-generated, hits the bottom line, makes Tesla's products less affordable to the masses, undermines Tesla's mission, & lowers dividends to shareholders.

Two things: Firstly, despite all of the noise from locals about 'cutting down the forest', I wonder just how many of them actually use it, and of those that do, how many of them do so on a regular basis. Colour me cynical, but I'm betting that the numbers don't come anywhere near what would account for all of the racket objectors are making. Secondly, that 'forest' is a commercial plantation and would have eventually been clear cut anyway. There's nothing (remotely) natural about it. Tobias, if Tesla hadn't bought the property & had plans to expand it's ownership into the rest of the plantation, how long would it have been before the owners clear felled it ot make cardboard?
@two_tier_gary_rumain5 ай бұрын
Yes, the entire forest area is a plantation with the wood intended for paper production. Was wondering what was there before. Probably farmland.
@pinkelephants14215 ай бұрын
@@two_tier_gary_rumain I'm guessing that it was indeed probably farmland and, as is happening in so many countries, the farming community is rapidly ageing, farming is difficult to make ends meet, let alone a profit, and with the younger generation frequently being unwilling to take on 'the family farm' preferring city life instead, the owner or owners, if it was more than one farm as seems likely, thought why not get out now and enjoy the cash. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the plantation was formerly made up of many small farming units. Traditionally, those would have made a living for their owners, sufficient to support a family, possibility the extended family. But those days are largely a feature of history & scale is now usually a key for farming success, preferably done using regenerative/permaculture techniques & not modern industrial farming so harmful to soil, water, air quality & as climate change drivers.

@pinkelephants14215 ай бұрын
@@two_tier_gary_rumain Absolutely. I come from a farming background and even back then, making a profit was pretty tough in some years. For many famers it's almost more of a way of life rather than a living, something you have to love because most of you won't make any real money out of it. There will always be farmers, just not as many as in previous demand centuries; we all have to eat.

Replacing a big, lovely roundabout with traffic lights? Typical US thinking: They never learn in traffic school how to navigate a roundabout, so they hate them-except in Carmel, IN. Roundabouts move traffic more efficiently and reduce the number of fatalities and serious injury accidents. They work because of their safety record, compatibility with the environment, aesthetics, and ability to make it easier for pedestrians and bicyclists to navigate.
@TobiasLindh5 ай бұрын
Tesla is not involved in the roundabout. So it's not a US thing. The calculations of the traffic planners showed that the roundabout wouldn't be able to handle the expected traffic in the future.
@bfelten15 ай бұрын
@@TobiasLindh So there's US thinking in Germany as well. What else is new? A roundabout can always handle much more traffic than a traffic light - with less idling in long queues and without the high added cost of the lights and their maintenance. The more traffic, the longer the queues at a traffic light, that's a well known fact.
@TobiasLindh5 ай бұрын
Their argument is, that it's not only the amount of traffic, but the uneven distribution of traffic. They did not want to remove the roundabout, but they calculated a few different versions of possible roundabouts and traffic lights, and according to their calculations the traffic light can handle the traffic at this specific location best. They said, in the roundabout versions, there would be long queues, because the cars on one road wouldn't be able to enter the roundabout easily, due to the traffic flow of other roads. I do not know if they where missing something, or if their calculation software is bad. I can only tell you what they told me.

Roundabouts aren't efficient when there's more than one lane due to the lane changing problem. We have them all over the place here in Sydney (Aust.) and they're always one lane. For higher capacity, traffic lights are always used.
