Durov was surreptitiously filmed leaving French custody, after having spent a night "inside". Clearly in high spirits sharing happy hugs and buddy-buddy goodbyes with French authorities.... clearly feeling like walking on air, free and un-escorted leaving prison for his personal car and personal bodyguards. Clearly Durov did not expect this display of satisfaction with his arrangements and freedom to be surreptitiously filmed. Clearly he has a sweet deal with personal freedom within France, as well as the Federal protection which comes with being under Judicial Supervision. Clearly he's flipped.

I was thinking something similar. I'm glad the Russian government is going to have a harder time communicating...but Peter's flippancy about freedom of speech is worrisome. Clamping down on pornography was one of the excuses the Chinese government used to justify its surveillance systems. The fact that the Peter's example was pretty much the same as the Communists is probably a coincidence...but, as coincidences go, it's pretty troubling.

Umm, do u understand how end to end encryption works? The arrest just shows that they can't break in and Durov doesn't have the encryption keys because they are generated on the client side not the central server, that's the whole point of secure communication technology. And btw, client apps are open source so anyone can check if they work as intended.

Your feeling of doubt is entirely appropriate. Zeihan's entire schtick is reading the broad strokes and then making confident sounding predictions. He's probably not wrong about demographic issues for example. When he drills down into the details however, his shallow knowledge of specific topics becomes quite obvious especially, like you say, if it happens to be an area you individually know something about. My eye opening moment with him was his description of the Chinese government and intelligence services internal workings. He described how Xi wasn't hearing reports from Chinese intelligence and the "phone was ringing off the hook". I'm not a China expert at all; but I was in close contact with one at the time. The internal workings of the Chinese Communist Party, government and associated agencies are so byzantine that native Chinese specialists have their hands full keeping track of things. Yet here, Peter Zeihan, (likely not even speaking or reading Chinese) was able to reach through the murky confusion and present a crystal clear picture of Chinese incompetence and its internal government workings. Set "fake expert" alarm bells off immediately.
