The funny thing is that I would have loved to start a vineyard at my family’s property but has run into the issues of the upfront costs. So it’s interesting hearing what are the possibilities of the wine countries in various regions. The thing is that the wine communities are actually very supportive to one another, so while some of the older countries could struggle, I could see a lot of enthusiasts stepping in to help relieve that stress any way they can.

In France many wineries’ grapes are grown in a village where each family in the village grow the grapes that produce the wines for the local winery, and they are all part owners of the winery. So it’s very communal. Francis Ford Coppola who has a large winery in Napa is one of the largest purchasers of wine in the Napa Valley. He sells local competing wines at his own winery. When people asked him why he does that, he says wine is about family and families support each other.

At 1:40 you mentioned Iran as part of the "Old World Wine Countries". Many years ago I had a customer who was one of the wealthiest people in Andorra, and often spoke about having the largest collection - by variety of origin - of wine in the world. In any case, he had a very large collection. And as with most collectors, he was obsessed with the bottles that had thus far eluded him, rather than his existing collection (once acquired, those bottles just became "dust collectors"). He would go on and on about his efforts to secure a bottle of Iranian red wine, which had supposedly been produced for a short while under the Shah, as a kind of minor, subsidized vanity project. He even wrote letters to people (strangers) in Iran whom he was told, may have a bottle of that wine still lying around somewhere. Anyway, in regards to your inclusion of Iran; FYI, there has been no wine - or any other alcoholic beverage - produced in Iran since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

More areas or different areas? I imagine that same warming makes current areas less hospitable for grapes, thereby shifting (not adding to) production
@itsmederek1
@itsmederek1 11 күн бұрын
@@akitadog01 Really depends on the specific area. For example Bordeaux the recent vintages have been better on average than they used to because Cabernet and Petit Verdot can struggle a bit to ripen. Germany also generally doesn't suffer. I would in general assume that more cold climate regions will be added and that existing regions will change their vineyard management, blends and winemaking techniques to compensate for the warmer climate. There are some places where the temperature is likely going to get out of control around the Mediterranean like Sicily but we just dont really know yet.

Finally someone mentioned Iranian wine I’ve been telling everyone that yes Iran dose have wine and it is really good! Just the simple fact that Islamic regime ban in production doesn’t mean that they don’t grow wine grapes there anymore. Either they grow wine grapes for small scale home grown wine(most families have their own recipe) or they grow them for medical ethanol especially in regions like Qazvin, Shiraz and Kurdistan. Although other regions like Hmadan and west Azerbaijan and even Khorasan also produce grapes. And Arak which is a distilled raisin and is really common in Mideast is a favorite of people so a lot of grapes grown for raisins( to use as snack and in baking mostly ) too.

A major point of the video is that wine needs capital, and Portugal and Germany are quickly going to have a lot less capital due to aging populations. Google age demographics and look at those two countries. In a decade it's uh not good.

When the French decided in 1973 to have Britain and Europe embargo imports from Australia (still inflicted btw), they didn’t include wine. Get this, the French didn’t know Australians made wine. Consequently wine exports from Australia to Europe boomed, because it was better and cheaper. The French are still furious about this glaring hole in the economic war they encourage the EU to still wage against Australia.

I don't agree with this analysis. Argentinian wines rank very high on the global scale (3 of the 10 World's Best Vineyards are Argentinian, including the first place, and the Uruguayan Vineyard in the top 10 is of Argentinian capital). Wine tourism is a very big business in the wine producing provinces, especially in Mendoza. And it's one of the few industries that, despite constantly living through economic crises, keeps on growing. That being said, it is true that local consumption of wine has reduced due to the economic crisis, but that reduction in local consumption is offset by more exports. And yes, despite being a people-poor country, when it comes to good Argentinian beef and good Argentinian wine, capital to invest is always available. And the government won't really mess with wine taxes because politicians love drinking wine too much.

I'm guessing that in September 2024 when this video was published, it was recorded sometime ago. For starters, Peter refers to it being late summer but I can confirm it is definitely late winter at the moment here in NZ (southern hemisphere location). Secondly, I recall it was maybe the year before last that Peter was here.

Absolutely. And SA vineyards - along with others in Chile, Mexico, Argentina, etc are far older than most in the 'New World' - they could almost qualify as Old World vineyards. Astonished that he could mention places like Australia and New Zealand, without as much as a passing reference to South Africa where the oldest vineyard is dated at 1685 - some time before either NZ or Australia were colonized. Love how facts are just optional these days.

I think if a South African wine was Napoleon Bonaparte's favourite wine we deserve a mention somewhere. Napoleon's favourite wine originated from “Grand Constance”, the French translation for Groot Constantia, a wine farm near Cape Town.

Well, except for the bottle of Argentine Malbec I brought to dinner with me to my Argentine in-laws last night, I have never been blown away by the South American wines in general, but my Argentine born, Brazilian raised wife and I will definitely miss easily available Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian wines, and I will miss the German, Austrian, and Czech wines that are hard to find now. Sad to say it, but thank God for the French.

Hi Pete's report has comes 6 months late. Summer is December to February and Fall or Autumn is from March to May in the Southern Hemisphere. Wine harvest is in early autumn. Educate yourself if you are a bit dumb about seasons and so on, particularly in different hemispheres. But Pete is correct about Western demographic crises. This crises is not just in the West (colloquially), but Japan and South Korea and China are aging rapidly.
