Day 355.
Today, we discuss reports of huge battlefield casualties being suffered on the frontlines, and cover a cluster of significant political updates, including the latest on fighter jets, the destabilisation of the Balkans, the impact of the Turkish earthquake, and the mystery of a Ukrainian reservoir being slowly emptied by Russian forces.
Plus, we have part one of a two part interview with Dr David Marples, a professor at the University of Alberta, Canada, who delves deep into the history of Belarus.
Contributors:
Francis Dearnley (Host).
Joe Barnes (Brussels Correspondent)
Nick Squires (Rome Correspondent).
With thanks to Dr David Marples.

Pure propaganda. And they keep erasing all the messages telling the truth. Bahmut is about to fall. If so many Russians are dying how come they haven't used the 250k troops they have waiting. Zelensky and his masters should have pulled those ukranian boys out of there. Literally many boys under 16 and old men at this point. But of course NATO will fight till the last ukranian. So they are just cannon fodder.

@@roverboat2503 Yes, the RoK has sold 2-3 billion USD worth of arms to the US. I believe a large sale happened back in autumn 2022. This could've either allowed further US drawdown or gone directly to Ukraine in bits and pieces, or a combo of both. I'd imagine the US would probably rather give older 155mm to Ukraine and replenish its stocks with new South Korean 155mm. Perhaps the drawdown of Israel's 155mm stockpile (300,000 rounds?) Surely has strings attached. Perhaps the US is going to replenish those 300,000 over a period of 2 years or something of this nature. A guarantee of sorts is required. Buying arms from Korea is a triple win. All 3 parties get what they want. And for the US, it's like a subsidy for Korea's MIC while also helping Ukraine. Korea then gains export market share and recognition for its efforts. Ukraine gets vital materiel to hold its forces over until the larger ramp-up of production is widespread. There are factories all over Central Europe that have run triple shifts and employed a lot of people. The efforts of these countries should be recognized too! Some produce a great deal of Soviet munitions that have been the stopgap until Ukraine can transition to NATO standard equipment.

The damage to the Nova Kakhovka Dam would appear to have been primarily to deny Ukrainian Forces access to the left bank of the Dnieper, as was the destruction of the Antonivka Bridge. The damage doesn't appear to have catastrophic and flooding below the dam is likely to have been minimal because the area is largely a broad delta region and seemingly within tidal influence. The resultant lowering of the water levels in the reservoir may influence navigation above the dam but it also denys the Russians the opportunity to restore the canal system into Crimea.

I find the comparison between Lukashenko and Trump extremely inappropriate. Lukashenko had the power to simply declare that COVD just isnt a thing in Belarus and nobody could say otherwise(publicly that is). To compare that to whatever Trump did, that the speaker apparently didn't like, is absolutely wrong, in my opinion.

Many years ago there was a lot of talk in Russia about pipelines being built on the kerch bridge for water and fuel to Crimea. At the time I didn't think critically about it, accepted this propaganda, and incorporated it in my thoughts and memories. When the bridge got blown up, I was so certain of those pipelines existing that I thought I saw evidence of them on the damaged parts of the bridge, the railroad bridge... It turns out they never built these things. They just made a big fuss about it, included thousands of contractors and other people in this Kabuki theater, and actually never built it... Given Russia's track record with real projects and illusion or should I say versus illusion, I'm willing to bet that this new pipeline is just more propaganda and not an actual pipeline being built

US behind the scenes has been planning to ramp up artillery ammunition production since the invasion started. When I was in the US Army reserves back in the 1980's we were still shooting 1943 50 caliber ammunition up. One summer the Active force shipped 27 truck loads to Ft. McCoy WI for the National Guard and reserves to shoot up. The so called "End of the Cold War" interrupted production planning and production numbers leading to the current drawdown of stocks.

These Russian casualty figures are not very relevant because a). Russia is not a democracy to have much sensitivity to their losses and b). These figures seem to come exclusively from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, and thus are hardly reliable. What is interesting for me is that the UAF, outgunned as they are, are able to retreat skilfully, completely in order and in tact, making the Russians pay dearly for every square inch captured. Then, they can form defensive lines immediately behind to be reinforced with both men and armaments, as indeed is now happening. This gives me hope that Russia accepts it will be materially impossible to push on much more, and start talking to Zelensky directly, who I hope, will not be so delusional as to make Russian withdrawal from Crimea and the Donbass a precondition of any peace negotiations.

So it seems to be right now; but strategically, Russia needs a workable peace too and I do not see how either side can achieve a decisive military victory this year...... so rather than an awful stalemate, consuming thousands of more lives, we are left with the Hope that necessity forces both sides to the peace table.

@@btfofffice The turnout was 62.9%. The missing 30% was probably caused by the Russian invasion, Russian shelling, Russian mass-murder, and/or Russian propaganda. Ukraine has only been free of its murderous and corrupt pro-Putin dictator since 2014 (he fled to Russia seeking refuge, btw - how amazing that deposed tyrants seek refuge in Russia huh?). Since that time Ukraine has successfully become more democratic and less corrupt - which is why Russia invaded it - Putin hates democracy and loves corruption. Democracy-loving Ukraine hasn't invaded anybody. Democracy-hating Russia has invaded many countries. Spot the difference.
