Here I am watching this film made over 90 years ago and getting more entertainment and joy than from any modern film. A remarkable quality of sound and picture but in this pre code masterpiece is Barbara. As others have said one of the greatest in a period that produced giants. Her acting is superb - even when not talking her face - natural reacting brilliant from hard boiled lines to true love. These old pictures have so much value even in the cynical world of today their morality simply told are perfect. Even the minor characters produce wonderful performances. The older I get the more out of my time I was born. The year this picture was made my grandparents were in their late 30s my parents children - it’s the era I should have lived in. Thank you to KZbin for hopefully allowing youngsters to stumble across get interested and watch and learn. As for Barbara thank you as always for a nothing less than perfect performance ❤❤❤❤

Sorry, although I've enjoyed her acting, usually in her very early roles where she plays strong, independent women, her range wasn't as great as Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis and Meryl Streep (definitely top three best actresses of 20th century). Stanwyck could play both drama and comedy equally well, but she always had a predictable fierce ( fighting mad) delivery as well as a sad (crying, etc) one. Not a lot of variation. Considered by the industry to be ranked 11 among top Hollywood actresses. Don't think this list includes the "younger" generation after mid century. A very skilled and strong performance in The Miracle Woman, yeah.👏👏

Thankfully because of reading a few posts below it prepared me for the abrupt ending! A phenomenal film from beginning to end! Thank you so very much for sharing this beautiful timeless classic work of art! I would be quite interested to have a discussion with young people after having them SEE this film. I believe many important life lessons can be taught in quality films like this. I believe it could help many impressionable young people with stars in their eyes to become more grounded in their ideals of love success and marriage. Ironically when I used the expression just the other day; Take it on the chin baby...how this serendipitous delight of a film would become my reward for once again doing just that! Having gone out to L.A. at sixteen years old And actually experienced first hand for about a month working in one of these dance halls. Where they actually had to buy tickets to dance with you. I can share it was a terrible experience! 98.9 percent of the men were from other countries who did not speak a word of English but thank God they were the respectful ones. It was awkward but not threatening. The rest were creepy old American men who tried to hold you too close and they too said not a word that made them even scarier and creepier. There was probably a lot more seedy things going on behind the scenes with older dance hosts there that I'm sure went on. I was just too young and naive to bother to question what was really going on. This film was so wonderful that guy Eddie was nothing more then a two bit using cheating liar! I wish they would have added a scene where he is accusing her and the other woman walks in and busts him that would have been priceless! The fashions the men and women wore back then was so amazing! I'm glad this story gave two kind generous people the chance to be loved and be loved for themselves! :)

Stanwyck is the master of the arts of listening and timing., nuanced acting skills extremely difficult to accomplish convincingly,, in character, both onscreen and onstage; each a different technique requiring laser mental focus coupled with superior mental agility . Barbara Stanwyck is one of the all-time greatest actresses. This film will soon be 100 years old, but she just leaps off the screen. She's so vivid, fresh, natural. Hard to believe she had her first onscreen role just 3 years before she made 'Ten Cents A Dance'. I think Barbara & Ricardo Cortez have GREAT chemistry here, but apparently he professed admiration for her but she wasn't such a fan of his acting skills. They starred together in 'Illicit' as well, which came out just a few months before 'Ten Cents'. They're both New Yorkers, of course, Ricardo was born Jacob Krantz & his younger brother is the extraordinary cinematographer Stanley Cortez (Stanislaus Krantz).

johnnydtractive Hi, thank you for reference, I will watch it sometimes. Right now I am so into 1920 th silent! Never thought that I would love movies without any sound, because a while ago saw few short episodes with Chaplin but wasn't impressed. The language in subtitles can be so humorous and I understand now why only rich Americans used to go to movies those days /not just cost but language was tough on emigrants/. I just watched The Flapper and several more last week. I also like to read about actor or actress who left impression. Like Olive Thomas, Clara Bow. Wikipedia is great and then, some other articles would pop up.

Just so many actresses & actors, directors, cinematographers, genres etc to track down in 'talkies' that I just never get around to watching silent films. But I love that you're immersed in them! I think it must develop different skills as an audience. And I bet the visual storytelling techniques are probably superior even than in talkies, because virtually everything has to be told visually. Maybe I'll try a silent film or two--since I like films that focus on women, would The Flapper be a good place to start? If you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them. Cheers!

johnnydtractive Hi, o yes, that was my second silent movie to watch, and I was hooked! Just make sure you watch KZbin option without any sound since apparently it's another copy with weird contemporary music added on, and people were complaining. You will love the humour, I guarantee, plus you will see that they actually do speak - you will see that very clear and even understand , Just without sound.

This movie, "Baby Face" (she was as rotten as she was brilliant), and "Night Nurse" (Joan Blondell always gave me palpitations :) are some of my favorite movies of all time. I think Barbara was like the Renee Zellweger of her era; she could be anybody, on command. And as I'm typing there's more from the list...... "Ladies of Leisure" was wonderful. Of course there were countless actors/actresses whose beginnings were pretty rough, but Barbara and her brother survived suddenly becoming orphans in the 1910's - 20's in New York City. It wasn't that long ago I latched on to Warner Brothers'/Busby Berkeley films, from the "Gold Diggers of 1933" and its sequels and I began to collect Joan Blondell films, which led to "discovering" the phenomenon of Barbara Stanwyck. Thanks for much for sharing this treasure.

" Eddie" was Monroe Owsley, one of the all-time great heels of the screen. See him in " Private Number" with Loretta Young, and" Through the Keyhole", Kay Francis. Great casting throughout in this one ( 10 Cents) ; even a fairly inspired turn by Sally Blane.

What a great film! I feel like I've been wandering in the desert lately (The Whale, May December). This must be the movie with the famous last 4 minutes missing? Stanwyck was Stanwyck, and Ricardo Cortez was excellent. (He reminded me of John Bowles.) The heel was such a crumb I didn't even want to know the actors name, so I suppose he was good. Best film I've seen in a month, rang as clear as a bell from the start. Underrated on IMDB.
