Schaub, because you know this, I assume you play(ed) hockey. You should also know that THAT almost never happens the way that it should. I played for 15 years and was the leading goal scorer on every one of my teams so I've been the victim of most of the penalties against us, and I've always dropped my stick when the opponent was holding it, and not once were they called for holding my stick. Maybe it's just bad luck for me, and although I always drop my stick because I want the powerplay, I really don't blame guys who just get pissed off and try to rip it out of their hands.

So what happens is this, Ferland goes to hit Foligno and his stick and his stick end up in the face/upper body area of some Wild players on the bench. Wild players like everyone else hold whatever part of an opponent that come into the bench. Ferland spears Hartman and makes it a 4 on 4 when his team is gonna get a power play.

Spearing is crossing the line in hockey and holding a stick on the bench is a penalty and a pretty dirty thing to do but just a minor for unsportsmanlike. Ferland should have punched him instead of spearing him. We've basically seen that situation before and the player doing the punching doesn't even get a penalty. I love Ferland but you can't spear. Glad he wasn't suspended though because he already has missed so much hockey.

Doesn’t matter if it’s double overtime in game 7 of the Stanley cup final and a team is already up 5 on 4, holding a stick from the bench is a penalty 100% of the time. You can clearly see the ref watching the wild player hold the Canucks stick and he chose not to call it, to me this spear is the refs and the wild players fault. He wouldn’t have speared him had there been a call but the ref decided not to even though he saw it happen. I’m not trying to say spearing is a clean play but I understand it in this context, what else could he have done? The ref watched the hold happen and didn’t call it so the Canuck player had to stand up and police the game for the refs who aren’t doing their job, that’s hockey

If the refs had called that he wouldn’t have speared, the refs weren’t doing their job so Ferland had to police the game for them. he didn’t really have any other choice. You can’t just let a team bully you without consequence, especially in the playoffs (“play in” whatever) and even more so if your role on a team is enforcer.

The only player that is stupid is Ferland. When a player holds your stick while you are both on the ice you give em a cross check with both of your gloves and don't hit em with your stick. The refs won't call a pen on you if you do that. If the player holding your stick is on the bench you pull your stick away and complain to the ref to get a pen cuz it is super obvious to tell if a player on the bench is holding your stick. Ferland instead spears a player on the bench negating the power play.

Yeah I thought it was pretty bad when they missed Toffoli high sticking Hartman and drawing blood. Other than that, though, it was just lack of discipline from the Canucks, who evened up three of the four Wild penalties (albeit one was a fight that was never going to be a power play to begin with).
