I've stopped talking to my mom about my emotions, feelings and experiences because her immediate response is "stop being so sensitive and get over it".

Growing up I'd reply.."You're too insensitive." "How about you practice being less insensitive." 🙃

I use it but haven't had good results with it. I like her approach but it assumes that the insensitive person has the ability to care and reason. I'm glad I'm not the only saying, "Perhaps you're too insensitive."

Does it ever work? Like are they ever like "hmm youre right, I probably am"?

Here’s the thing - I guarantee if you treated them the way they treat you, they’d have a full blown temper tantrum. So this whole “you’re too sensitive” frame is an abuse tactic they use to make you an easy target.

Being called "too sensitive" is what my covert narcissist mother used to sometimes say to me, usually when I took something she said personally and it was meant to be personal when she made rather nasty remarks. I've gone No Contact with her recently, have loved ones who understand me, and am perfectly content to be someone who feels some things deeply. Happy New Year, Terri!

I have been call "Too Sensitive" by my narcissist mother & by one of my older brothers. I was never allowed to have or show any feelings as a child. What do you have to cry about, why are you laughing so loud. Yet my mother could show as much emotion as she wanted and directed the causes start at me. She been long go but my Brother is still around and keep my distance.

Holy wow - I’ve needed to hear this my whole life, and now am going to practice saying, “I’m not asking for your opinion...please stop judging me.” I am highly sensitive and empathic. It’s not a weakness but it does make a lot of people uncomfortable. I’ve pushed my feelings away for so long. I need to care how I feel in order for others to care 🙏🏻

I hate when people offended me and then say I'm being too sensitive, I'm overreacting, or that I can't take a "joke."

Someone saying you’re too sensitive hurts my feelings because when you’re really sensitive you get hurt easily and it hurts my feelings when someone says I’m too sensitive idk why

U can't tell someone not to judge you...that is a form of control. U can ask them to care and that still is there choice. I like " I'm not asking for your opinion about my sensitivity . I'm telling you this doesn't make me feel... I hope you care enough about how I feel. 😃using that. Thx

Ughhh my sis says it and triangulates it to our mom... 🤦‍♂️ And it’s so stupid because her kids are super sensitive and emotional as well. It’s so dumb to put one person down for it when she doesn’t do it to others. Narcies...

What if he said 'you are a sensitive woman' And I replied no I'm not. I'm strong. He said "I didn't mean it in a bad way honey".

Dear Terry, could you please give an example where you're dealing with calling out a narcissist? Because, tbh, your example is not about calling out, and your husband is (thankfully) not a narcissist. In one of the comments, someone tells about how her mother-in-law told her children she was a cow because she breastfed them. Suppose you would call your mother-in-law out on this, and she would respond, "You are too sensitive?" what would be a good answer then? Thank you for your support!

Of course- I might say, “Right now, we are not talking about me. We are talking about you, and I am making a request that you stop disparaging me with the kids, or anyone for that matter.” You could keep repeating that if they kept trying to turn it back to you.
