You did well Jami. Nothing worse than horses out at night. Our horses did that one night about 3:00 a.m. They stayed on this farm and one of the gates must have been left open and they got out. The neighbor who was up late studying heard hooves on her driveway. Sure enough all three horses were there. Bucket training is the way to go. Our friends had to run up to the barn to get some feed but all three horses followed them back when he came with the feed bucket. It was very scary for everyone as they are on a busy road. Thankfully no one was hurt and the horses were safe.

They'd lean on it occasionally and stretch it out or push it down. Like you, I'd wake from a strange dream during the 2-4am window and just know the horses were out. I couldn't hear it or feel it like you did. I just knew. So I'd be out there in my boots and pjs coaxing them back into the barn in the dark with a sprinkle of grain as their reward. Then go back to bed. 🐎😲🐎
