Hello Terry. So much nice information's. Maybe, you can make a part three? Topics: How do you collect the seedling from the candles, how is your stratification process and what substrate will you use for the seedlings? Best regards Martin (Germany)

Great idea Martin. Actually these 4 segments are already recorded so I cannot change that but I will cover these topics in future videos. Thanks so much for the suggestions. You can watch my "Pines from seed" playlist on my channel for the answers to some of your comments and also please visit my blog as before I started video I was blogging so there is a lot of information on this topic on my blog too www.bonsaitree.co.za/blogs/tree-talk

I've always wondered, Because of the importance of the mycorrhizae, should you never treat a pine with a fungicide?
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai 2 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. One which I can only comment from my perspective on. I do treat with fungicide, you must, and I usually drench the tree particularly now in spring as this is when new growth is most susceptible. However I think what you mean perhaps is whether it’s a good idea to do so with systemic fungicides. I have recently done so and am observing the response. However I think it won’t really make a difference provided you don’t often treat with it and I doubt it will kill all mycorrhizae. Anyway the spores will be around in the air and will re-inoculate the soil. At least this is my thinking whether wrong or right I am not sure. My pines are all very healthy though with lots of mycorrhizal growth

@@TerryErasmusbonsai Thanks so much for that info. Now I won't be as hesitant to use fungicide on my pines if needed. I haven't needed to yet, no fungal problems are apparent.

Hi Terry, thank you for this very informative video. I just have a question about repotting. I repotted a few black pines last year and they've not really shown much growth this year. Is that anything to be concerned about? They created candles and had a small flush of needles but not the sort of growth I was expecting. They are very similar to your tree, 3-4 years old
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai 2 жыл бұрын
In the season after a repot the growth is often weaker. This is normal. However I cannot really say as I don’t know how the repot was done, how strong the trees were when repotted, how they were cared for afterwards etc. if the weak growth continues this season then you need to consider if there is something wrong with your growing medium or other variable.

Thank you Terry, your discussion of gradual transition of the sap flow from one sacrifice branch to the next has deepened my understanding of the horticulture of pines significantly. I suddenly feel I understand the three year plan for one of my problem pines in a totally new light. Again, and as always, thank you for sharing your work.

Thats awesome Russel! Yes, I must admit I learnt the hard way on this. Killed a few trees by cutting too much too quick and watched it gradually wilt away. But some lessons are learnt the easy way and some the hard.

I just has a Japanese black pine seed pop today. I bought a cheap kit off Amazon with like 8 different species of tree. So far I have atleast one sprout of every species. I am growing them in 80% perlite 20% peat.

That’s great that you are starting from seed. That media is very wet. I’d suggest you change that sometime soon to avoid roots rotting.

Thanks very much Terry. Question; why a terracotta pot?
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai 2 жыл бұрын
Why not? Terracotta allows water to evaporate through the sides as well leading to more even drying. Pines don't like wet feet. What is your preferred material? Some people rave about colanders, I'm yet to be convinced.
