GM made a presentation to SAE [Society of Automotive Engineers] on the Spark EV, describing why they used a 400 lb-ft motor. Basically a lower numerical gear reduction provided a better driving feel, with less “reflected inertia. They compared other EVs to driving a manual ICE car in second gear. Also, they wanted to build a quick hatch. 😀

Yea, Sparky for the win! I have surprised a lot of ICE cars from the stoplight in my 2016 Spark EV even with “only” 327lb ft of torque. Anyone that does not realize how much fun they are needs to drive one, if you can find one.

As a retired old fart, although not living in a retirement community, I love my 2016 Chevy Spark EV. I would love to see you run against a Mini Electric since aside from range performance is not too far off. BTW, I thoroughly enjoy embarrassing many V8 powered SUVs, pick up trucks, Miatas, and various vehicles with loud pipes in my funny looking retirement golf cart in the many stoplight gran prix especially leaving those who switched to the right lane who plan to beat you out then cut back in front of you only to be left gawking. Also, I believe your both already eligible for AARP at 45+. Do the Mini next could be fun but you may have issues fitting in it.

i believe the spark has a quirk where going to 50% throttle until 35mph or so and then going to 100% yeilds a faster 0-60. Someone on the forums tested this with good results

The reason GM only sold 7000 Spark EVs is not because they had flaws, it's because that's all they needed to sell for compliance. My Spark EV and plenty of others have been flaw free

It kinda sucks they gave up on the spark ev, it's I think the smallest ev ever sold commercially and was way ahead of it's time. I just bought my 2022 spark (which is gasoline) and word is they too are going bye bye 😭

@@resetsetmefree478there is a smaller EV. It’s the smart fortwo. Also a blast, but not as torque happy as the spark. It is also right(rear) wheel drive and was available as cabrio.

@@JLinder1379 yep. I’m lucky enough to own one Spark EV, one smart electric drive coupe, and one smart electric drive cabrio. All great cars! *fun fact.. if you press your foot down past the “button” all the way to the floor, you get another 20% power out of the smart. I was once lined up next to my neighbor who owns a Dodge Challenger Hellcat at a red light. I rolled down the window of the smart and asked smiling.. wanna race for pinks? He laughed and declined, and said, nah.. I know how quick those electrics are. I really wanted to race him. To 30 or 40 mph at least, or to the next light. Maybe next time. 😄 FFWD to about three years later just this last October, a Porsche 911 was in front of me on a canyon side road, and started to drive quickly.. so I followed in step. Then the Porsche started to really drive fast through the twisties.. so I did too, staying within 3-4 car lengths the entire time. We both stopped at the next stop sign. He floored it. So did I. I’m certain he was not expecting me to keep up with him for the most part. Quicker and nimble and total sleepers in and around the city. The Spark is what I love about my smarts.. with more range, more seats, and faster charging. A sleeper as well. Haven’t had the opportunity to race or pace the Spark against anyone yet, but it feels like it could move if I needed it to :) Nice to hear there are so many other happy Spark EV owners out there. I’m definitely one of them.

@@evolv.eyup. Same is true for the gas smart. The “kick down button” is there too. I sold my ED for an i3 Rex then sold that and our Prius Prime for the Mach E. Still miss the ED and would’ve picked up another had they moved ahead in times and added DCFC. I’d even have accepted CHAdemo if they didn’t want to go CCS

12:36 you do have a triple secret sport mode. traction control off and unlock full 120kW of power at low speed by feathering throttle. Or as the instruction manual in the car says, half throttle until 34 mph then fully depress with traction control enabled.

I have fun racing kids on noisy, jacked up trucks. In a '16 Spark EV and a '19 Bolt EV. They all end up catching up at the next light and looking at me with a weird look that can translate roughly into "What the #^&% is that thing?".

we need "in town" drag races. Like fastest to 40 MPH drag races. Traffic light to traffic light, yet never braking the 40 MPH speed limit. A "Who can get to the doughnut shop faster" race. Love 0-60 races, but in normal driving often I have owned vehicles that vehicle A may be slower to 60 MPH than vehicle B............ the "faster" vehicle B was actually slower 0-35/40 MPH. All in how the power band and gearing was set up. :-D Another fun and great video dudes!

Spark EV is a great car. It wasn't cancelled because of problems. It was only available in certain CARB states. It was replaced by the Bolt.

I like the Spark EV. I had one of the early ICE models. It did it's job as an economical little puddle jumper. We still ended up with a 2012 LEAF SL for the neighborhood runabout because we found one with a bad charger for $3500. We replaced the charger ourselves and are in it for less than a Spark. That said, if the LEAF were to be totalled, I'd keep the Spark on our short list.

B mode on the leaf literally means brake mode, making the car slower, to go faster you need to turn the eco mode off by pressing the eco button on the wheel

Hey everyone! Been modifying my 2016 Spark EV with coilovers suspension bushings, race seat, aero and a whole bunch of little cosmetic mods to fit it’s personality. Throttle controllers actually work for EV kzbin.info/www/bejne/laCzn4iVhamribs I have almost removed the torque limiter to 30 with an aggressive throttle setting. Also don’t be fooled by GM making the rest of the Spark 327ftlbs as it has a 3.8 final drive that puts the axle torque a smidge higher than the 400ftlbs at 3.1 final drive.

The second gen LEAF PLUS trims would beat them both (but not the Taycan, lol). The base model gets 40 extra HP vs the first gen, the 2nd PLUSes get an extra 115 HP vs the originals.

@@lfsracer79 The Spark EV 0-60 times are done with stock tires, which are low rolling resistance all season tires. I used to have a 2002 lexus IS300 which stock does 0-60 in 7.4 seconds. My spark EV has Yokohama Advan Flava's on it and I guarantee you it is faster 0-60 than that IS300. Took a big hit on range with them tho.

I mean, the range comparison wasn't exactly fair. You should have said how many wH of energy was used rather then what the guess-o-meter says. Like I said in the previous video, the spark changes it's guess pretty quickly, so it was changing your estimate based on if you kept driving the way you had been. You probably didn't actually lose 8 miles of range, considering I have had times where I gained 5 miles of range driving 20 miles. Either way it was an entertaining video, hope to see more soon!

It would be cool taking out all the unnecessary stuff on the Chevy Spark EV to make it as light as possible. Just leave 2 seats and tint the back windows so no one knows it has been stripped and compare the previous 0-60 time with the new 0-60 time.
