My guess is he coasted to avoid THE BRAKES overheating. Stock brakes and tires (without even a factory track package) should be the immediate bottleneck for the car's performance. Another indicator of this is the suggestion of non-factory attempts with wings etc - upgrading battery cooling is hard, swapping to carbon brakes is easy

@@ConnectingODots battery cooling on the plaid is great, zero issues as of today even when it's very hot and you do repeated launches over and over, it handled pikes peak like a champ! But yeah, he was coasting to keep the brakes fron overheating and fading. I think the Plaid with 6 piston carboceramics, cup 2 tyres and top speed unlocked to 322 could shave off 8/10 seconds easy and get a 7:20/7:22

Also, the exact tire and suspension setup. "Direct from factory" means absolutely nothing if it is a special one-off model made BY the factory. Which I can almost guarantee it was, just based on the extra tech and safety gear, alone. A racing spec Tesla S with a roll cage and other modifications "direct from factory" is not exactly what you and I can buy at the store tomorrow. Impressive, yes. @pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulpark1170 No they don't. Well, the sportiest cars when pushing on track make some awesome engine noise, but first of all it doesn't drown our tire squealing (what a stupid thing to even think), and second of all overall ICE engines in normal use are super quiet. So much so that so many car manufacturers have to put fake engine sounds playing through the speakers into their ICE cars, and for example Rolls Royce found that their cars got too uncomfortably quiet and had to reduce the noise insulation in certain ways to get noise levels back up so that the car doesn't feel unnatural and uncomfortable. Also for example when Auto Motor und Sport tested four different versions of the X3: gasoline, diesel, gasoline-electric PHEV and pure EV it was _not_ the EV that was the quietest! The EV I owned was nowhere near as quiet as the bottom-of-the-range BMW I then rented for a few months. Same with Tesla: it's nowhere nearly a car that can be said to be one of the quietest, even of far cheaper classes. I wouldn't be surprised if a base Mercedes C-Class diesel is quieter than all Teslas, at least with the optional added sound insulation package, with which it's still a small fraction of the price of a flagship Tesla. An E-Class certainly is far quieter. Don't believe the propaganda that cultist websites, blogs, and also commercial 'car testers' spew. Remember that bloggers, you tubers, car magazines get PAID to advertise car manufacturers' products. Tesla bloggers probably all make money off Tesla's skeevy Multi-Level-Marketing scheme of customer referrals, and also most own stock. Don't believe everything you hear, and don't get too attached to false prophecies spread by evangelists.

Tesla is the one to thank for this EV mania, and offers great performance for the price. But has someone how loves chassis quality, this time truly shocks me. A 100kg lighter car, with over 300hp more, less than 1sec per km on the ring is simply a joke. If they bump the Taycan's power to 1000hp, it will probably get in the 6min mark. Chassis is king in the ring. A Megane RS trophy r, ran a 7:45m with mere 300hp ( it's track focused, but still a small hatchback and very expensive by the way ), and an Audi RS3 ran 7:40m ( and it's known for it's not so sharp handling ).

7:35 with 1000hp and that straight line acceleration is anything but impressive. If this Tesla was a 600hp petrol car with the same weight and handling capability it has now, it would have done a 8:10-8:20 lap. This laptime just proves how bad the Tesla chassis development is and how poorly the car handles, because in a straight line it literally is quicker than almost every hypercar, yet, on track it posted a slower lap time than BMW M5, Porsche Panamera or the GT63 AMG, all of which have around 600hp and actually weigh more than the Tesla.

So after all the hype, the Plaid, rather than being faster than any ICE car, is in fact slower than most of the familiar players we know and love. Heck, you could go out and buy a big Camaro ZL1 1LE and spank the Plaid on a road course. That's a lot less money if fast is what you want. The old Taycan Turbo is plenty fast for an EV sedan, so what if you could go a few seconds faster? The Taycan also did it with far less power, because it's better at a lot of other things. KZbin, apart from channels like this one (Thanks Misha!) has dumbed down performance to 1/4 mile drag time bragging.

We fanboys are loving it because the EV takeover is accelerating so quickly. A decade ago there was nothing competitive in the EV world for consumers. In that time Tesla has made models spanning a good part of the consumer spectrum. Now they look good, they have good range, they are high performance, they are affordable to a large demographic (not necessarily the plaid, but model 3, model y, etc. ) Now we've got a battery EV, with a back seat, tons of storage, rear screen, video game system, autopilot computer, nearly untouchable in a straight line, and puts up good numbers on a difficult track. And the cost? Comparable to its peers, and a fraction of the price of its straight-line competition. So yeah, we're pretty happy. It is heavy. Batteries are heavy. But you know what? This is the beginning of EV battery technology. In another ten years there won't be a single ICE car on any race track record list. Batteries have a long way to go... I mean that. Batteries have a lot of potential ahead of them. ICE is at the end of its life. All the tricks are exhausted and there's nowhere for it to go. Tesla should be very proud. In a decade they snuck up behind everyone and embarrassed them. That's why we fanboys are so giddy. I can't remember the last time some ICE car has made any advancement to be proud of. How many years has it been since there was something revolutionary out of the ICE community?

On drag strips you require max power from the battery for only ~10 sec and have time to cool the battery in between runs. On the Nürburgring you basically require either max power output on the straights or partial power output in the corners for over 7 minutes straight which constantly heats the battery, almost no time to rest...and when you rest the battery while braking, the car regenerates power to the battery, basically charging the battery which again induces heat into the battery.

Misha can you tell me how many continuous laps the car did at the Ring ...?? I ask this question because I was present at SMSP in Sydney Australia where the Plaid could only manage 5 to 6 laps of the 4klm circuit before going it Thermal protection mode , this is only 20 to 24 Klm and was interested how they got around this issue on a circuit that is almost 21 klm a lap .

this plaid purposely ran factory street tires with steel brakes to show what a truly stock trim could do. unlike many of the other 65 other cars that ran with ceramic brakes, aero kits, and sticker track tires like cup 2's.

@@mateokovac2642 i love it when i can be a smug American and inform you that you're referring to the prototype model S run a year before an official production stock attempt was taken. Tesla will probably do another record attempt this year with a factory track package that includes carbon ceramic brakes, sport cup 2s tires, performance brake fluid, active aero, and track software. this might be enough to make up the 8 second difference between the plaid and the current 4 door production Nürburgring record.

@@miguelberetta7887 No, wrong again, the Tesla is substantially cheaper than the Taycan by around $60,000 but is fully functional as it is. If Tesla add the option to upgrade the car for track racing (my guess is for around $10,000) as a standard choice on the production car, then it will win the record back. Claiming this is a ‘better quality car’ is incorrect, the current components are perfectly fine for normal use.

Misha brought up a great point; How the Germans/EU classify vehicles. I'd like to suggest that "production vehicles" must be run in a configuration that meets noise requirements for inner city use. People are asking; What's so special about the lap and drag times? The answer is; you can drive this to your job without attracting the police and pissing off your neighbors.

The standard Plaid smokes the Taycan "turbo"(😂) on the dragstrip, so it won't be caught out of the bends The Taycan has a much slower 0-120 mph time, so it won't catch the Tesla in the straight It's power boost only lasts a few seconds (overheating?🤔) So that won't work. It's heavier. It's not going to make up 12 seconds, even before the Tesla is unlocked to 200 mph.

@@rogerstarkey5390 The standard plaid also smokes both a Panamera Turbo S and Alfa Giuilia in a straight line, yet both of those cars destroy this lap time. 3 seconds for Giuilia and 6 seconds for Panamera. A FWD Honda Civic Type R with 1/3rd of the power is only 7 seconds slower. Taycan's weak point is the weight. If they make Taycan lighter then it will best the Plaid completely.
