To get real technical, a tail wind and head wind do not cancel out. Aerodynamic drag is not linear, a 10mph headwind will consume more than a 10mph tail wind will save. I still like the video, thanks for your efforts.

A 10 mph wind would demand 78% more power to drive into the wind than away from it: (70+10)^2/(70-10)^2= 1.78

100%. This test and result should not be compared to any tests done at freezing, nor at 80 degrees. Really there are a few windows where EV range makes dramatic jumps: 38F and below sees significant range loss that ramps up to severe as you go below freezing: 40-65F yields fairly consist diminished range, and 70F+ yields max ranges (that are usually advertised).

Keep in mind he's testing in Colorado at a higher elevation than most people drive at. Cold increases air resistance. Elevation decreases it. Range tests are also impacted by the sun, given that a sunny day can warm the cabin of the car in the winter, reducing the use of the HVAC. An overcast day would have seen lower range. They should just test the summer range without sun (most optimal conditions), then test efficiency through various conditions. Cold weather in sun impacts efficiency by A%. Cold weather without sun impacts efficiency by B%. Warm weather in sun impacts efficiency by C%. Driving in rain impacts efficiency by D%. To get the worst case, it would be cold weather without sun in the rain. Are we starting to understand why road tripping in EVs is so much more complicated than gas vehicles? Range concerns will be especially problematic for those living in apartments / condos without a plug to charge overnight, and the worst the weather conditions, the higher the chance of lines at chargers. Waiting at a line at a gas station isn't a big deal. Each car takes like 5 minutes and it takes 5 minutes to fill the car up. Waiting at a line at a charger can take 15, 30, 45, even 60+ minutes, then you still have to add in the time to charge. PHEVs are generally the better choice for those with nightly charging, and hybrids for those without.

It's not complicated when you're using navigation, at least on a Tesla. It factors in everything for you and the estimated arrival % is super accurate in my experience on road trips in mine.@@naaspam1185

16:51 - Jordan mentions noise canceling. Here's how that works. The regular outside noise comes in as peaks and troughs of sound waves - the higher the peaks and the lower the troughs, the louder the sound. All the noise cancel system does is hears that sound coming in (using a microphone) and emits an "anti-sound"... exactly the same sound, but instead of a peak it'll give a trough (and vice versa) at exactly the same frequencies. How? The peaks are rapid bursts of high pressure air, the troughs are low pressure, so all the speaker has to do is sound off low to counteract high and high to counteract low. It does this thousands of times a second, and that flattens the waves into barely a ripple. A roar gets turned into a whisper - and it works better with low frequency noises that are constant, like the sound of road traffic at less than 1kHz, because the electronics in the noise canceling system has time to react much more effectively and it's a constant sound for the most part. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j53PnZhjetZnm80

Good write up, but feels a bit like you're telling that this is a very simple tech, while it's definitely not in reality. The hardest part is to get this working smooth without too much oscillations and resonance because of sound reflections bouncing around.

The EV9 GT-L went nearly as far even though it has much more room, is considerably taller and boxier, heavier, has a useable 3rd row that even adults can fit into, a more useful trunk for tall items, larger wheels (21” vs. 20”), and even has wider tires (285mm on GT-L all around vs. 265F/275R on this X). For families the EV9 is a better vehicle. EV6 also charges a little bit faster, especially if you plug in at higher SOC. Tesla has higher peak charge rate but the 10-80% in the EV9 takes around 24 mins vs. ~30 for the X. EV9 is also less expensive and I think the average family would prefer the normal doors to the often problematic falcon wing doors on the X, and coming in about $25,000 less expensive is another bonus. Plaid is obviously faster but that’s irrelevant to the average family. Mid-4s 0-60 is faster than 90% of the cars on the road so I don’t think many will find the EV9 slow. I am curious why Kia went down on the voltage for the EV9 vs the other e-GMP cars and if Hyundai will do the same on the Ioniq 7. That vehicle looks to be more sloping in design which may do enough to bump up aerodynamic efficiency to bump up real world 70mph range to the ~300mi mark.

Since teslas have the heat pump, poor weather only has a 15% impact (30 vs 70 degrees) right? If this was getting 295 or so, another 30 miles would’ve put it right at epa figure. Pretty impressive. Great video Jordan. Congrats on the nice car out of spec Dave!

Tested out on I-95 with avg.energy and it went down to 263 Wh/mi. It's still not as low as my '22 MS LR where under the same conditions the usage is between 225 to 230 Wh/miles.

Range test should be done with a fully loaded car. Its very rare that someone drives a 6-7 seater vehicle with one person. I am sure no vehicle with 6 people and their luggage / gear will meet your numbers. Even if you can't put 6 people in the car, you should try putting some dummy weights in the seats or in the foot area on the floor to mimic 6 people sitting the vehicle.

I also remember the local band 303. My only comment on the car is that it's pretty expensive for a range of less than 300 miles at normal highway speeds. Or, if you are driving in Montana, Texas or parts of Florida, 70 mph is slow.

I didn't know the the EPA uses 70mph for estimates. New to me. I have a 2022 X Plaid and just got back from a 3200 mile drive and it use 360 wh/mile. However much of this was at 77-80+ mph and a considerable distance through rain and high wind, although some was with the wind. Plenty of range as far as I"m concerned, because after 150-200 miles I've gotta get out and stretch as well as pee. So many Tesla superchargers along the way it was no problem finding a fast version 3 and get 250 kW each time. We always had enough (150-200) added miles by the time we returned to the car from the bathrooms. BTW the X front doors close and open without touching if you like. They are only a bother if you don't know how they work. For example, get in sit down and when you hit the brake the door will close. In the settings you can choose how and when doors open.

As a former Tesla owner, not surprised it didnt reach its stated range. Mine didn't, and I havent met anyone in real life that has, they need to ban the 5-cycle test, and only do the 2(?) cycle that Porsche and other conservative automakers use. 70-75mph at a certain temp would be more consistent than city/freeway driving. There are major efficiency gains in city driving, just show the worst-case scenario on the sticker. Porsche Taycan says ~200mi but easily hits 240 at freeway speeds.

At $100,000 +/-, I won’t be buying a 2323 Tesla Model X anytime soon. But the 280 ish freeway mile range for me is plenty for any use I would ever put the car through. I like then rend color and white interior. I went for a ride in the back seat of a Model 3 Tesla about a week ago. I enjoyed the experience, but I was disappointed in the car. It was very loud inside with a ton of road noise and the door opening was very low. To get in and out, it was a remove head at the shoulders experience to get in and out and the opening between the seat and the B pillar post was too short for my foot to clear. My 2013 Prius Persona hatchback is actually quieter and easier to get into and out of the back than the model 3. I now see what the Model Y out sells the Model 3. My takeaway was, as a car to ride in, my Prius is more comfortable. And a better fit. But it is not even on the same planet as far as driveline performance is concerned. I hope to ride in more battery EV’s in the future to see what they are like. I would also like to drive them too. But to end up in my driveway, they have to be the best overall package for my needs and driving enjoyment for the money spent.

Even if you don’t need the money… I suggest you try it. I thought the interstate speed limit in Colorado was 75. And that makes some difference. The manufacturers provide drag equation coefficients. It would be nice if reviewers compared their results to those provided by the drag equation. But even at 70mph one needs to refuel (charge) every 2 hours to stay in the sweet spot of charging - 20% to 80%. Makes long trips a hassle.

hey Kyle. I love my model Y performance 2022 but the range is starting to become a real hassle especially with towing and winter time. what’s your suggestion for a 60K and under EV (used or new) with more range that can tow 3500lbs. more than 330 epa miles minimum.

Gorgeous? Looks like steppe to me, I'd prefer to see some trees. I'm glad somebody is testing those vehicles to confirm what the actual range is gonna be in real life conditions (interstate roads, freezing weather, etc).

Nice video. My Model 3 Performance shows 283 miles of range when fully charged but I only get about 230 miles of actual range and that is in warm sunny Southern California weather. Tesla range estimates are terrible. The more important part of the video I think are the four phantom breaking episodes you experienced. I also experienced that on open highways with no traffic which drives me nuts. It is so dangerous when it does that. I’m just lucky that I haven’t been rear-ended yet when that happens. It’s just a lawsuit waiting to happen.

The more efficient the cars are at city speeds, the more the EPA average will differ from highway driving only. EPA shows both city and highway MPGe for all EVs and it is that agency that decides how the standards should be measured. Tesla has no choice in the matter.

@@0ooTheMAXXoo0 Yes, partly true. Manufacturers, like Tesla, can choose between a 2-cycle and a 5-cycle EPA test and the 5-cycle test often produces more realistic numbers due to a wider range of conditions, tho. Manufacturers like KIA, BMW, Mercedes-Benz come very close to their EPA ratings or even beat them. Also a generally efficient car won't have such a big difference between EPA numbers and pure highway tests. The biggest difference is actually in not generally efficient cars, especially SUVs/trucks or small sub-compact cars, they have a sweet spot at lower speeds and fall off a cliff at highway speeds when the electric motor is being pushed outside of its efficiency zone (mostly sub-compact cars with small motors) and when the air-drag becomes more important than the rolling resistance. The reason why KIA EV9, which is actually not crazy efficient, comes close to EPA numbers during the 70mph range test has mostly to do with a more realistic EPA number from the start. Tesla just always overhypes the range and does everything to push numbers for advertisement reasons. Tesla has a choice in the matter

Why the same old tape harping on no turn style stocks? Takes most people 5 minutes to adjust to new design. I think its easier and safer to use with hands on wheel. Out of spec dave is awesome for lending his beautiful car.
