I own a hornet and testdrove a MT09. Weirdly enough i wasnt too impressed with the MT09. Its a good bike and i got confident with it pretty quickly but was it more fun to ride than my hornet? no. All those magazine journalists tell you that you need more power and suspension that come straight out of motogp but all that does is making you faster and more illegal. I enjoy having to wring out a 600 and i enjoy torquey engines as well. Dont buy the bike everyone else likes buy the one you like

I've put 20000 miles on one of these in the last 3 years, great bike, I put a cork in-between the instrument binnacle and the shroud to stop the vibration. Great fun bike, it loves the red line.

Got this as a first bike after passing my test, took it easy for a first couple of days just to get used to it then on the third day I gave it full throttle and did a bit of a wheelie shit myself lol so yeah very fast bike handles great very smooth not too comfy but then I'm big, I wouldn't recommend this for a first bike if you're not sensible like me otherwise can't recommend enough. Bulletproof engine not had any issues with anything since buying just changed the rear pads myself piss easy 2 minute job and being a naked you can reach everywhere check for leaks etc. I drive a bit mad and I've not had any tank slappers or anything like that just feels solid and fast, very fast and after half a year of ownership still feels fast and yeah it goes very fast, did I say it was fast? Well it is fast. That's my review. :D

I have one to, the Carb version, but although I sort of hear that hunting low down, if I wanna cruse about down the lanes, at say 40mph ish I find it easy, its quite happy to do that. only thing the big 1000, 1200cc type machines have over it is, at that type of speed, you don't have to drop it down a gear or two, to rocket off, you will on the Hornet; but with the silky smooth box its not a probem for me anyway. but as you say, its NO push over,. if you want it to race/go fast, its a very, very hard bike to beat, and on normal roads, if you can ride it well, there is near nothing that will make you look silly! it will still keep with the BMW 1000RR, on them lanes. But I don't ride my one too hard just a quick blast here and there. ad did you know, not many people know this, ahh, its the same performance as the old Z1300 Kewaker. But the full power version102 BHP, its not really for new, new riders, it can easy run away with you, and get you into trouble real fast! Unless its been detuned..

Thanks. I have a 2006 and it also does this bubble, brbl, brbl when I'm going through a town in 2nd gear at 50Km or when I'm going slower in 1st gear it almost pulses. It just doesn't like low speed perhaps due to the fueling? Not sure. It reminds me of my old tuned subaru wrx, it hated going anywhere in the 0-30kph range. This is my first bike and I love it!

I bought a ‘07 Honda 919 Hornet as my first bike. Great power and comfortable to drive. Not a good beginner bike unless u can control your right hand. Plenty of power on tap. I love the bike!

I had one of these it was a fantastic bike I loved it. Mine ran perfectly at lower speeds ,I should imagine yours isent running right because the mixture is wrong with that exhaust on it .

I have a 2007 Hornet with ABS with stock exhaust and I love it. Well put together and a smooth bike. When I ride normally I get between 55 and 60 miles per gallon. I did a test ride on the new CB650F couple of months back and I am not impressed at all because it is slower than my 2007 Hornet and does less miles per gallon.

Watched you video last year as I was looking to buy my instructors 09 Hornet as my first bike up from a 125cc. Spoiler! I got it! I agree with pretty much all of your points. Very jerky in first gear but overall very nice machine. Stuck a top box on it and it is flawless. Great fun on my own and have taken the Mrs over to Ashford so it can handle 2 up no problem. Honda build quality, great noise and awesome looks. 10/10 from me.

Check for excess throttle cable slack if you find it jerky at slow speed, mine was the same until i took the slack out of the cable & now it's perfect !

I also own a 2008 hornet and I'd have to disagree with you on the "1st gear or cant make a quick over take" comment. This bike will certainly haul ass exiting a corner in 2nd gear. For anyone else who owns this bike and has the annoying dash plastics vibration sound, just get a fairly solid rubber foam and wedge it tightly between the head light and the dash. If you own this bike you will know where I mean. You cant see it and it 100% stops the "buzz".

+Munkeh's Motors haha yeah a speed tripple is a beast of a bike. hope the buzz fix works for you. just remember it has to be quite a firm rubber foam and needs to be squeezed in there tight! I also noticed you saying your exhaust is loud. if you really want the most out of the 600 get your self a power commander chip (around 200 euro) and remove all the restrictive plumbing. basically just a straight pipe between the headers and your slip on. Then have the power commander dyno tuned. the difference is night and day! in both power and sound. you will ever give RJ's nuda a run for its money 😉

Nice video! My 2007 Hornet is my first bike, main concern was I didn't want something too tall or too heavy. Had my heart set on a Triumph street triple but the insurance as a first time rider who doesn't drive/no driving history, in my 20's, insurance is astronomical. The Hornet however was far more reasonable and I hope to keep it for a long time :) Want to go exhaust shopping now...

My 2006 919 hornet tends to have that vibration at around 4,000 rpms. Goes right away above or below 4,000 rpm. It also red lines at only 9,500 rpm

Own a 2007, no feet vibration, no fairing vibration, but when my balls vibrate, its time to spank the throttle. Great little bike, but 'must' get a suspension (front and back) if its to be your daily driver, stock suspension is shite, and needs braided lines\bleeding as stock brakes are woeful. Ta for the review mate.

Ive got a 09 Hornet but silver. Akra gp exhaust, renthal bars, HRC tank pad and a few other goodies. It looks pretty much the same as yours. I wanted a faster toquer bike so took a test ride on a 06 speed triple and a brand new daytona 675. Apart from the sound all of the bikes felt identically fast so I kept the hornet. The Daytona was actually a lot louder than my hornet and it had a stock exhaust.

Are you running stock gearing? Might help the issue if you went up a couple teeth on the rear sprocket or down a tooth in the front and a fuel chip would help the responsiveness of the fueling after opening the exhaust up

Either return to standard exhaust or buy a power commander and a rolling road session to set it up. Cost about 400 quid just to make a load noise.

You need a power commander to get your fueling spot on to match the lower back pressure from the exhaust do your research with someone who can set up the power commander on a dynomometer

Hey, I have the same bike, really good review! :) quick question, at which point do you switch from first to second? sometimes I am ending up getting neutral. especially when I change gears in really low speed, like to take a roundabout. I don't like taking a roundabout on first as it jerks quite a bit for my taste.

+Neil Azzopardi If I'm riding normally, I probably change up at about 10 - 20 mph, just after I've started moving. I usually clutchless shift from 1st to 2nd so don't notice a drop in power as it only takes a fraction of a second. If it's a tight roundabout I usually leave it in 1st and drag the rear break to smooth out the power so it doesn't jerk about.

Given you're from the UK, how do you deal with rain/snow, do you still ride it or switch to car for safety reasons? Just have to ride a bit slower and get used to not really being able to see where you're going. I wont ride in snow (any more), I don't want to risk dropping my bike, I just get in the car then. But we rarely get more than a couple of weeks of snow a year down here in Kent. I don't think we've had any since I've had the Hornet.

Hi and thanks for this video :) I also have a Hornet (2008) and it was pretty funny to see/hear the same nitpicks I have on mine such as the hunting and the vibration from the plastics at some rpms :) Something that I'm wondering that you might know of: my Hornet came to me with a leo vince exhaust and no catalytic converter (also I have the original material). Do you know if the hunting would be a bit better, or if the bike would generally run better with the cat and/or stock exhaust? I'm getting kinda bored of the noise (somedays..) so I'm considering putting the original material back on and wonder if the bike would run better/same/worse. Cheers!

+Francisco Costa I'm afraid I have no idea if it would make a difference, I have a shockingly poor mechanical knowledge of motorcycles :D From what I read on the interwebs the best thing to do is get a power commander and have it set up properly on a dyno for your exhaust. I've just learnt to live with it though, I only notice it now when I've finished test riding a larger cc bike.

I have a 2004 Hornet and I put a big jet kit in the carbs, a low restriction K&N filter and a Two Brother's racing exhaust. This small mods even out that brrble because she couldn't breathe. Imagine what she lost in the "Detuning" process and reverse it to Stage 1 and these engines wake up.. let her breathe

Hey, I'm no expert, but I think it's mainly down to personal preference. I would imagine the wider bars mean you need to apply less force to the end of the bar to get the bike to tip in, but that is just an assumption based on GCSE physics...

I'm sure 'A KentRider' had a restricted Honda Hornet, but after a quick google it would seem you can't get a bike with more than 95bhp restricted down for an A2 licence. Since the Hornet is meant to have 102 bhp I guess you can't... Google 'A KentRider' and PM him, he might know more.

+UK KWF When I used to have a longer commute on faster roads, I would get about 45mpg which would give me about 180 miles on a tank of fuel. But now that I ride around in town a lot with a pillion I only get about 36mpg and a range of 145 miles per tank (tested this last night by running out of fuel after 147.6 miles!). I'm sure it's meant to have a 19.5 litre tank but I can only get 18.2 litres in from completely empty (again tested just last night!). So your looking at about £20 to fill from empty.

I knew someone that had theirs lowered by a Honda dealership, not sure by how much, but I think there is a lower seat and they can do something to the rear shock to bring it down a couple of inches.

Hey, no, doesn't come as standard, and I didn't actually have one, would have just used the term 'quick shift' to mean changing up a gear without using the clutch, by simply preloading the gear shifter and just changing up when quickly shutting and opening the throttle. It's easy with a bit of practice, I got taught it by my instructor when I was getting my licence.

Mine chugs a between 3K-4K RPM when it's cold, but still pulls from 2K when it's warm. Factory exhaust. I've read peak torque is much lower than you say, around 6K?

No, I'm afraid I didn't, sold the Hornet back in 2016. I would of thought a power commander setup with a dyno would be able to sort it out though.

Never rode a 650r, but from what I understand it has a slightly more relaxed engine, so you should have a bit more low down poke to help with normal paced riding, but it wont have the same top end rush of a hornet.

@@borarider669 I'm afraid I don't have any experience on their long term reliability. The alternator died on mine, but I'd recommend diving onto some owners forums and see what people think. Remember people usually only make the effort to say something negative, so a lack of posts is a good sign!

I recommend looking up RoadcraftNottingham's video - Lesson/Advanced - Smoother gear Changing, gear shifting on your motorcycle. He can explain it a lot better than me. Plus watch all his video's, you'll be a safer rider!

What's the fuel range like?

MyRandomLife247 When I used to ride along fast roads I would get 45 mpg, with a 19 litre tank that's a range of 190 miles. But I usually fill up after about 130 miles just to be safe. Now I only do town riding or playing hard I only get about 35 mpg so only a range of about 150ish miles.

It's quite easy to change up a gear on a motorbike without using the clutch with no modifications. As you're riding along, just apply a slight upwards pressure to the gear selector, then rapidly close the throttle, and at the same time, press up firmly with your foot to change up a gear, and open the throttle again. With practice you can do it really quick. You can get a quick shifter fitted, and this automatically disengages the throttle when you shift up for the same affect. I wouldn't recommend using this technique to down shift!!! In all my vids, 99% of all upshifts will be without the clutch, you'll hear that the throttle is only briefly shut and it's nice and smooth, practice makes perfect.

@@beastlee8779 Afraid I don't know enough about gear boxes to give an educated answer, never seemed to harm the hornet, and I was taught it by my motorcycle instructor when I got my licence, so I think a lot of people do it. I'd recommend watching some clutchless shifting guides.

Hey man, love your hornet, looks just like mine, I got one last week and am very happy with it, previous owner told me that the owners manual is under the seat, but I'm having trouble opening it. Any help would be much appreciated, and great vid too! :)

I'm guessing you've found the keyhole on the left of the bike near the back under the seat :) Turn the key 90 degrees (cant remember which way, only goes one way) then grab the back of the seat (i usually stand behind the bike, and pull straight backwards a bit before trying to lift it. Wiggling it about a lot seems to help (the seat, not the key). Hope that helps!

The XJ6 has got 77bhp compared to the hornet's 102bhp, so will be a little more forgiving to a new rider. Plus the XJ6's seat is 15mm lower which again will make it a little easier to ride. That being said 600cc is quite a big first bike, but it's what I did so.... yeah.

Yeah, the Speed Triple I got after the Hornet was a bit less fun to ride, as you never really had to change out of 3rd... like ever... I missed changing gears!

I've owned a hornet for many years and totally HATE the fact that I have to wring its neck to get some decent torque out of it. Such engine behaviour is only acceptable for racing bikes. Period.
