Plastic lids have an obvious advantage over traditional metal lids when used repeatedly for mushroom cultivation, THEY DON'T RUST! In this video I test several of the most popular plastic canning jar lid types available to mushroom cultivators. I test each lid with a run of grain spawn, check them for leaks when inverted (liquid culture), and assess cost on a per-lid basis. I also demonstrate how to set them up with our favorite Microppose injection ports and filter discs.

Nice video. I have found that the plastic lids can leak for liquid culture but shroom supply sells a gasket to prevent that from happening. Also, when using plastic there is no need to vent them with a syringe as you have previously demonstrated. Simply unscrew a quarter turn in front of a flow hood. For grain spawn I have had great success just unscrewing the lid a tad bit for air exchange during a spawn run. That way there is no filter to fail. Just remember to tighten before shaking!

Great, another renegade open source channel I need to sub to. Thanks for answering every question I had about these lids. I've used the white lids and ball lids but had some issues. I was looking into whether the tough tops were worth it. Have you tried pressure cooking the tough tops with the seal? Were they modded any further? How'd they handle? Thank you
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 2 жыл бұрын
There are two options I'm comfortable using. The toughtops are good to go as is. The lid is thick PP5 and the silicone sealing ring is nice and thick. The second option, and the one I'm currently going with, is to buy the cheaper white PP5 lids I show in the video and buy separate silicone sealing rings to insert into them. This is definitely the cheaper option and they still work great. Both perform well in the PC, you just need to check for tightness after the PC run, and I still like to use a foil lid over them only while in the PC. If you're going to use them for LC, I would lean toward the toughtops, but I'm currently still using the old steel lids for LC.

This is off topic but I recently purchased a spore syringe to create a liquid culture. After inoculation, I sucked some liquid back into the syringe. 5 days later and the syringe is full of beautiful mycelium. This will prevent me from having to stab the liquid culture in the future, and allow me to monitor the progress of the original culture jar without taking it out of incubation. I'm sure everyone else does this as it's fairly obvious, but for anyone that never thought about it I just thought to add that tip.

Now I just started doing this mush stuff so I'm not really experienced but I say if it's not broke don't fix it. So I assume not for preserving means not for use in a PC? I hear you, the old metal lids will always be effective. If you want to try a plastic alternative that will seal just as well though, those mason tough tops with the gasket are very nice. Good luck with the Lions Mane. Also, be sure your grain is fully cooled before inoculation. Inoculating when too hot is a common reason for jars showing no growth.

Yes, the rubber seal stays in place, and I tighten them when they go in the PC. I've personally never had any issues with jars cracking or breaking. The lids will often loosen a little on their own in the PC, so make sure you snug them back down as soon as you pull them out.

Not necessary. However, if you don't loosen the lids slightly they will vapor lock very hard and be exceptionally difficult to remove after cooling. They will also tend to bow. I'm referring to the white mainstay lids and the ball lids. I have found the vapor lock does help improve contamination resistance, though unscrewing them in a SAB is truly hellish. I've also ran them at 15 psi for 2.5 hours with no explosions or real issues. I plan to move to gaskets or filter disks as shown in the video because they're difficult as fuck to remove without any modding.

I bought the same exact ones cause that's all they had. During the PC cycle I was asking myself, wait this is plastic and its getting hundreds of degrees inside there. So when I researched them online I came to the same conclusion everyone said they would melt. By then, they had already been inside for half the time required. So I decided to wait it out. Worse thing I got a mess to clean, and lesson learned. Common sense told me that I should definitely wait several hours after cycle to allow them to cool. I assumed they would be malleable/soft if taken to early. They were semi-successful so far. All four lids did not melt, and no noticeable defects. I did 4 total. 2 contaminated (due to my fault, I overcooked the first batch of popcorn; all the kernels bursted) and 2 are completely colonized about to go to bulk. But they are not labeled PP5 or anything and I'm still on the fence if its safe? Did you ever find a definite answer to your question? Ive decided to only use PP5 labeled for now. @@rickheath5507

So the algorithm dropped me back on this video and I’ve had a chance to use these for a couple runs. I’ve had an issue with the injector ports basically losing adhesion when I spray the lids down with ethanol. They always seem to come Right back and I’ve yet to have a contamination issue but that’s definitely been happening. To be clear, these were new lids that were cleaned with ethanol and dried prior to applying the port stickers. The injection hole is hella tiny too like 3/8” so there’s definitely enough lid for the adhesive to grab. You seeing this issue too?
@RenegadeMushrooms

No, I'm actually not having any adhesion issues personally. They do recommend 1/4" holes and that's what I have been drilling so I do have a little more adhesion surface. One question is do the filters ever need replacing? If so maybe using steel lids don’t matter. Do the lids really rust if you glue them around the hole? I’ve opened five year old bottles and they weren’t rusty. I did open like a 15 year old bottle and you could tell the lid was rusty or degraded so I know they degrade but bottled jar lids last for years before going rusty.
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 2 жыл бұрын
The filters seem to hold up well for 12 to 15 runs in the PC, sometimes longer. They definitely hold up better on plastic lids then they do on steel lids. The steel lids will rust under the filter when drilled and you will see the rust staining through the filter. The key when sticking the filters on to the plastic lids is to make sure the hole is smooth (clean up your burs) and clean (wipe down with rubbing alcohol).

So you can’t rtv glue the hole on both sides to prevent rust on steel lids? I’ve been debating about getting steel vs plastic lids for two weeks now. I guess I should try both. Like some say the plastic ones leak or the plastic lids have a seal that falls out. I’ve worked with seals before and it does suck when they fall out. And then some say black or white lids one is better. I guess I should try them all. I notice microppose makes affordable filters etc rather then using the other kind. Ya I guess I’ll just experiment with both kinds and see if it still rusts even gluing the bottom side. I suppose maybe it doesn’t prevent the steel from being exposed to water.

@@koltoncrane3099 RTV will prevent the steel lids from rusting where you drill, but all steel lids will rust eventually. I still use steel lids for liquid culture because I can't afford leaks. For grain spawn jars though, you can't beat a PP5 plastic lid with a filter disc and injection port from Microppose.com. I'm not endorsed by them, I just like their stuff. I'm personally not a fan of the syringe filters for jar lids, I much prefer the self-adhesive disc style that Microppose sells. The syringe filters are too prone to trapping and retaining moisture imo, eventually leading to mold contamination.

which lid would be best for liquid culture??

Definitely the Mason Tough Tops lids, or the old school metal lids for liquid culture.

Awesome, sounds like a good plan. I just started cloning my own wild mushrooms a couple of years ago. I've always done liquid culture, so working with agar was challenging at first, but now I really enjoy it.

@@RenegadeMushrooms I found this one spot where there's lots of gold chanterelle and lobster mushrooms. I never see morels, I found a bunch of black trumpets. Now is snow, look for the most hardy pre poured agar plates on that site, im kind of overwhelmed with ocd lol

I always wondered if the cheap plastic lids worked in the pressure cooker. Seems they did!
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they work great. They key is just making sure they are PP5 plastic. PP5's high melting point allows it to survive the PC.

You can buy silicon gaskets to suit the cheaper lids. There also cheap. And there good quality.

In the discription they say not for use in pressure cooker. I have used the three Walmart has in store. Mainstays, ball, and tough.

I still use the metal lids for some things, but plastic has definite advantages too. If cost is your only consideration, metal are the cheapest no doubt.

My Microppose lid filters changed the holes look a lot bigger than the originals I got. I've tried contacting microppose several time in a multitude of ways and there has not been one answer . But the pics definitely show a huge difference. I can't trust them or the company anymore as they wont even answer or respond.

I think they may have changed suppliers, I noticed the difference in my last order as well. The new filters seem to be working fine for me though. When WillyMyco first featured them on KZbin, I'm sure their sales took off like crazy and with all the Covid supply chain issues, I bet they are overwhelmed. I understand your frustration.

@@RenegadeMushrooms just a simple reply would be nice . I havnt been rude or anything wasn't after a refund. Was just asking the question. I did suffer some contam issues with the new filter patches on . But that was probably from another issue. I have been putting micropore tape over them just in case. Now I'm just using micropore tape. Not sure if it makes a difference? Micropore is a lot cheaper but a bit messier.

Just noticed that the Ball jar lids are made in Malaysia. It's always good to not send money to China because that's giving aid and comfort to a government that really doesn't like us. Also, Malaysia was my home for 17 years and I'm happy to see them getting your money.

Ah never noticed that. I'm still rocking the metal lids for liquid culture, and actual canning of course. Everything else is plastic now for me.

Yes, I know. I've actually discussed them in detail in some of my other videos. They can work, but they have their own issues. They pale in comparison to the gaskets in the Masontops Toughtops lids. I've used both extensively, and I have no skin in the game. In this instance, you get what you pay for.

Good tip, I've started using the cheap reusable silicone sealing rings to get a better seal, but parafilm or something similar is also a good option.
