Awsome man, you guys ROCK! A very testing ones patience, trip for sure, but also much knowledge gained. I love these old buses, they are just art deco to die for. Cool that you are into VWs too, I did a 59 Delux Beetle years ago, always wanted another one, I have worked on a few since then.

Ahhhh I didnt know about that last water leak! Id have been tempted to make a hose bandage to cover that hole with a few worm drive clamps over top to seal it, done that before with big bore leaks and it works well providing the manifold isnt porous and brittle. I think both of you have been to hell and back on this rescue and yet No Lowboy needed. Kudos!

We managed to rescue 2 buses and drive them almost 3000 miles without a single tow!

Good video guys and however frustrating a great learning experience. I was scheduled to vacation for 4 weeks in Northern Michigan this fall. With all of the covid hysteria we decided to stay closer to home...touring WV state parks instead. Maybe a Michigan visit for fall of 2021.

JB Weld works ok. Of course, you could use Jason's polyester underwear as a layered substrate, and add more JB weld on top (of the underwear). Pack it down. I'm sure Jason would be ok with this. Bless

I think I would have disconnected the line from the end of the manifold, and found the right size hoe to slide over the manifold and put clamps on it. I realize it's kind of late now, but just some food for thought.

Sage, you need to chill a little. Getting mad with a situation never helps. Look for the problem, identify the problem fix the problem. Advice from an old aircraft mechanic that has ferried many aircraft back home.

Patches on a water manifold? If you have one hole, that manifold is compromised throughout. Replace it.

How many gallons of fuel does the Silversides hold? What type of highway mileage did you get driving back?

Front tank 30, Rear tank 80 gallons, we averaged 9.8 mpg.

If spilled coolant could go from alternator cooling pipe to air filter, doesnt that mean alternator cooling is working wrong way? I mean, isnt the idea that alternator gets fresh clean air from air intake, instead of pushing air from engine room to air intake?

DC generator, not alternator. Cooling air is sucked in the rear of the generator and up the pipe in front of the gen up into the air cleaner by the engine blower. What happened here is coolant squirting out of the water manifold got caught in the opening in the pipe from the gen and was sucked into the air cleaner pan.

OK, I presumed there was fan in generator. I have air cooled alternator in my bus and it has duct, so it can suck fresh cool air outside engine bay. It has even air filter in it, to keep alternator cleaner.
