i was raised in the paint booth, started painting cars with my dad, and before too long i was painting all my friends guitars and anything else that you would consider spraying with a sray gun. ive got the most experience with ppg.

I realise that is something of a naive question, but as it's basically a slab of wood that is being painted, why is it not possible to treat it as a shelf, skirting board, or any other wooden furniture? That is, using a brush or a roller?

You absolutely could use the same techniques as you use for furniture. It all depends on the results you are after.

I've built 3 guitars (one P bass and two LP style) in the past few years but I could not justify spending the cash on a pro level paint system. It's why I have to suffer with rattle cans over a proper paint system. Plus I just suck at painting (I've gotten really good at prep work like sanding). Painting is an art and skill that takes years to develop, but to get started is cost prohibitive for me.

Well I guess if I were going to be a professional guitar paint finisher I would go this route. But for my own projects I’ll stick to the rattle can.

painting and finishing was easily the most annoying part of my DIY parts caster jobs. And then one was an old Ibanez LP where I had to scrape the binding of a double bound custom. i watched the Gibson factory video where they say they trained their binding scrapers for 6 months before letting them have a go. think in future will just do the oiled finish. or maybe just try a wipe on paint.

Also: Do you mix the tamco color with reducer? how many parts color to thinner do you use for solid color finishes?

Great question, each paint is different and the manufacturer will indicate the ratio for paint to reducer. Many of them are 1 to 1 but always remember to check. It will usually indicate on the can but the MSDS sheet is the best place to check.

rattle can £4 to spray gun + air hose + air feed… £250 .. depends what you can afford really 👍
