While that is true. Critics review a movie based on how well made it is not how enjoyable. GxK was pretty enjoyable but did have pretty mediocre effects and a story with human characters. The production overall was just weak. It’s still very enjoyable for sure. But that’s not what critics look for. They judge the overall quality of a movie.

That's a very lame argument at best, and heavily flawed at worst. The time gap between film releases is a weak, surface level argument that has no merit. The same weak sauce argument that is on the same level as comparing the two because Godzilla himself is in them-that isn't enough to warrant a comparison of two obviously different movies with different genres with different art styles. The one and only thing both movies have in common is that they both show their respects to Godzilla's roots in their own unique ways. That's it.

One of the more Ground Breaking things about this Movie, is that it’s the Very First Monster movie to Present Two Female Kaijus of Different Species on scene in the Same movie! Those Monster being Shimo and Mothra! Now while their Roles aren’t as important as Kong’s, they still are needed in the film :) It is so VERY RARE To see Female Monsters in Giant Monster Movies!

It isn’t without issues but I felt shockingly refreshed from New Empire. I dunno, I just felt happy upon finishing it. Also it was very nice seeing King Kong get a good ending after years of him getting robbed of happiness in every other version, especially since it is his 91st anniversary, and without Kong we wouldn’t have Godzilla to begin with. Also I might be called a heretic for saying this, but I’d rewatch New Empire more times than I ever would Final Wars (which honestly is one of my least watched Godzilla films).

I think that's because these people aren't aware of shin because minus one was their first exposure to the franchise which made them watch the original as well and nothing else. I'm gonna gatekeep, I don't care. Non-fans see Minus One (an elite tier banger, make no mistake) and suddenly act like Godzilla experts. They can fuck right off. Ya'll need to step off and educate yourselves. Now, onto my next point. This is a fight that has been ongoing in film discourse for ages and nobody learns anything from it. People always seem to willfully ignore any thematic meaning in "dumb" movies like GxK because they earnestly (and thats the key word there...EARNEST) embrace fantasy and wonderment - like by virtue of its tone it CAN"T be about anything than what's on the surface. People, even those who call themselves fans, have a way of automatically looking down their noses at films like GxK and enjoy it from a detached, ironic position instead of just being honest and embracing the film on its own terms. A film doesn't need to be dark and serious to be "about" things. Tone does not dictate content. GxK has all kinds of themes - themes of outsiders finding their homes and a sense of belonging, the oppressed being liberated, and nature working together to correct itself - as Kong, Godzilla, and Mothra are very much meant to represent forces of nature and aspects of nature from the violent and forceful to the nurturing and balanced. All this stuff is there, right there to engage in if you just let your guard down enough and stop arbitrarily putting up walls regarding entertainment. Is it particularly "deep?" No, but why do themes need to be "deep" to be engaging?

I don’t find the comparisons annoying, it’s understandable that they happen but I think it’s more a sense of peoples tastes or current sentiment changing; like these box office action films will always have a place but I think people are starting to crave more emotionally driven story telling again, that kinda got lost to some degree with these drawn out franchises that scaled out and having something a bit more grounded in “realism” despite being fictional is weirdly refreshing. Idk if that makes sense but I know I’ve been craving a tonal shift and sometimes that’s been in original works or realism, simplicity, as well as nostalgia. Weirdly on the note of a more serious Godzilla, I really loved the 2014 monster-verse one and I think if it were to be released today it’d strangely have a more positive reception than it did back then; it also feels more connected to Minus One than it does it’s own franchise because at the time it was a return to a more serious Godzilla with a metaphor for nuclear weapons etc. in contrast to its goofy Western 90’s predecessor… only thing is that it quickly reverted back into the goofy action film. Either way, I enjoyed both for different reasons.

I agree. I still love the old Godzilla movies of the 60s and 70s. That's when I became a Godzilla fan when I was a kid. It is great to see another more serious Gmovie like minus one though. The monstervers is fun also. Although this latest movie GXK is more of a king kong movie then Godzilla. I have never been much of a kong fan. Godzilla being kongs sidekick. Nope. Not for me. Godzilla's HIM to me. The Godzilla character has been played as silly as All monsters attack. To the last 2 more serious Japanese movies. Shin Godzilla and now minus one. i was totally a hater before the imax directors thing. I thought the monsterverse was going to be slop viewing like the mcu that just wastes your time, but then the director thing really made me realize how much wingard is doing for godzilla and that even though it might be slop, its good slop, like taco bell. (in this case the mcu is akin to soylent or something) Sure its not the most metaphorical movie, but not everything needs to be so uptight. While I agree with the fact that comparing GxK and Minus One is kinda unfair because both films are going for completely different approaches. There's some things that you contradicted or just straight up ignored. The "Serious" tone (while done right in previous japanese films) hasn't been done right in an American film. Godzilla 2014's human drama is just poorly presented and just boring because the film itself doesn't know what to be. With KotM, despite being a hybrid of both campy and serious tone suffers from awful writing and characters that are just annoying because it shows that Michael Dougherty doesn't really care about the human characters but still gives them a lot of screen time because that's what the writing demands. The exposure that Minus One gave to Godzilla brought a lot of people to see that these kaiju films be more than just dumb action and that's great. With GvK and GxK, Adam Wingard knew that going for the campy tone was the right call but now with Minus One having so much popularity, people want more developed human characters, not just a more "serious tone" and that's a completely valid argument because like you said in the video "it would get boring seeing constant serious Godzilla films" same goes with campy, fun MonsterVerse films. It would be cool to see a more character focused film with fun kaiju fights (basically KotM but done right)

Honestly I was one of the people disappointed with GxK but not because it was goofy hell thinking back to it there were definitely things that felt out of nowhere but I really don’t care. The movie still is a fun movie I felt like the king side of the movie was really good with suko and King Kong growth. Scar king as the villain was great on the big screen. It was fun I just felt disappointed because I really just came for godzilla and shimu fighting, I was fine with King Kong being the monster with more focus but I just felt like there really should’ve been with godzilla or just when it really counts like show more of them fighting or having a beam struggle to show who really is the strongest. I will say comparing Godzilla X Kong to Godzilla minus one is just doesn't make sense because these two movies are different Godzilla minus one is a Godzilla movie that is basically a revision of the 1954 Godzilla but Godzilla x Kong is a entertainment movie who want some kaiju action basically Godzilla cannot just stay as a serious movie and always need to be a metaphor of atomic bomb

Minus One and Godzilla x Kong both aims a different story, Minus One is a dramatic and emotional. While Godzilla x Kong aims for a theatrical monster brawl. Both are awesome in their own way, these critics never understand the diversity of Godzilla. Comparing these movies are dumb.

The problem with GxK is not that is about monster fights, it's that the story and characters are very poorly written. I would compare it to -1 to show how you can make a godzilla movie with compelling characters. You can also easily compare it to GMK or GxMG, which have a ton fun monster fights but also have compelling characters, themes, and drama. It's OK for gxk to be silly, but that doesn't mean it can't also be good.
