The PTR 91 series of rifles are essentially HK91 clones that are built here in the USA on old Portuguese tooling. The rifles are priced right and shoot well, and many people are rediscovering the joys of roller delayed blowback as a result of their being on the market. So what do the guts look like, and how do you get to them?

The G-3 series are very reliable rifles that even Portuguese soldiers serving in combat in Africa in the 1960s thru the 1970s hardly ever cleaned their rifles other than wipe them down unless they were forced to by their officers or NCOs to clean them.Unlike the German Army their G-3s were spotless from using theirs at the Hammellburg Infantry School.When i was in Northern Iraq the Kurds love these rifles too because a lot of them are captured Iranian G-3A2s.The Iranian ones still shot well with replacement parts coming from Turkey or Pakistan.When i came back from Iraq in 2008 i bought a PTR-91 for my own because the original HK 91s were beyond my price range.My PTR is begging me from the safe to go out to the range right now.Meanwhile i have to go to Ventura Munitions to buy some some food for it along with refreshments.Great video again Alex and crew!!!

The FBP G3A3 m/963 was a very resilient weapon and required minimum maintenance on the field. Once you were back to base don't even think on surrendering your service weapon without proper maintenance or full of mud/dust. During the Overseas War, there was probably one distinction, while Fuzileiros (Mariners) had pretty much 'no questions asked' access to weapons, other branches like the Air Force or Army were responsible for their weapons. Bad serviced weapons or with missing parts could lead you to fort prison. You probably heard your story from an ex-mariner ;) There was even this sort of Mantra that your G3 was your new girlfriend and you were required to treat her well (in the scope of the mentality of the time).

Hi Alex! One good advice from a military user of this rifle: If you don't want your finger to be broke or even cut off, I strictly recommend you to not put your finger there to check the chamber, without holding a charging handle. There were some talents out there, so, be aware.

I've had two of the Norwegian versions when I served in the military. Incredibly reliable, easy to field strip and clean. Packs a punch for sure! There are some sharp edges on it though so if you're field stripping in a hurry, it's easy to cut yourself. Common beginner mistake is to look down too closely to the iron sights... That recoil will give you a black eye for sure!!

during cleaning and maintenance you shall remove and clean trigger group.because if not theree is a real danger the hammer will release itself. not fun. Ihad the G3 as my service weapon for 4 years and I have seen it happen more than a couple times to put it that way.

I remember doing this all the time in the Bundeswehr, back then in the late 80s. But I winced a bit when you put your finger into the open chamber without keeping the charging handle secured. Those things can sometimes snap loose and the gun will do nasty things with your finger. :)

We can get Bundeswehr Slings here in Germany pretty cheap. They look old and Worn and give every Clone a nice look. Thank God we can have the Paddle Mag Release. Great Video, thanks for that!

Nice to see it pure with the metal trigger group, HK grip and the S-E-F selector. I left the ODG polymer furniture on, but I see the appeal of the wooden Stuermgewehr look and feel.

I remember these from the '70s. Portugal had a revolution, and gave up its colonies. Some smart men decided to truck as much weaponry as they could to us in Rhodesia. The G4 seemed like an odd rifle to those of us used to the FAL, but many troops liked them. Very helpful video, and a great looking rifle. The trucks contained everything from these to Kropatscheks, and all sort of pistols.

A friend of mine and I disassembled the bolt group. It was tough to get apart and putting it back together was a chore. Then the rollers wouldn’t retract and later popped out. A trip to the store where purchased and the man told me you don’t have to disassemble it that far. So now, a trip to a gunsmith.

I have a PTR-91 special edition that came with the classic wood. It's a really nice rifle. I added the G3 bayonet lug, leather sling and Hendsoldt ZF model 1 scope. I still need to get a steel lower to complete the look.

Bill Springfield sells a updated recoil buffer kit. Factory is designed to handle grenades. It reduces recoil by 25%.

What a neat rifle. If it for whatever reason stops going bang...you have a quick disconnect system to get at the bolt carrier which can be used to club about anything to death...anything not shooting at you.

Love this rifle Mine is a Century/PTR Cetme C308 Sporter. Its actually done quite well. Fit and finish is Great! Its accurate and reliable. Also has the grenade launcher rings on it, which you can use a clip on bipod with. I've taken over a dozen hogs and a couple white tails with it so far. Around 2,500 rounds in 2 years. Only issue was a magazine with a weak spring and sticky follower. Got mine for $650 With Bayonet. Had to replace the muzzle break to a PTR Bird Cage so the bayonet would mount snug. This thing eats anything, Steel, Surplus, Modern. Just keep it Clean. It gets very dirty very fast but will keep running. 500 rounds in 4 hours at the range and when I tore her down it was filthy!!! On a 2 day hunt, under 20 rounds fired and it was still pretty dirty. Easy to clean though. I run an $80 knock off ACOG and it gets the job done lol. No Name Ammo has Cheap 308 steel case I just picked up. Anyway Great Video Brother!!!

mine has a couple different colors of furniture from old G3s. the stock is different from the handguard and grip, and the grip sometimes looks brown when it's in the shade. though i did get one with a Pic rail, i decided that piece of functionality was more important than the classic aesthetic.

I ran into a problem while familiarizing myself with the weapon, which I just bought. After removing the bolt group (it dropped right out) I went to put it back in. It won't go back in!!! It stops at those little rollers along the side. What have I done wrong?

Hope you've figured it out by now, but you basically have to turn the bolt to release it just enough for the rollers to disengage. Its hard on a new rifle. I did the same thing. Lots of people have.

The CETME forend uses a screw not a pin so, how did you do this?

Pin on the trigger housing is a fake? On AK4 if i pull out that pin, the trigger housing becomes loose and the gun just wont easily fire, because trigger housing falls down like few millimeters all the time.

+Kennard Lang It requires the hole through the flat that allows the gun to accept a full auto trigger group. To install one, smiths have found out that you can drill a hole on one side to install the paddle and still remain in compliance.

Leonel Braga there’s a wedged shaped piece in between two circular rollers. When in battery the wedge forces the rollers into locking recesses that hold the bolt shut during firing and releases at a safe pressure

george kontalexis aside from size not much. They function identically, though I’m certain there’s little parts interchangeability between the two. Though the rollers might be interchangeable if you’re mad enough to try it
