As I own the 2023 GX equipped exactly as reviewed in this video, I can say that I don't see that many upgrades in the 2024 GX to justify a 11K increase in price. The 2023 shown here is a luxury trim with the offroad package and it does have a 360 camera as well, along with Captains Chairs, leather, etc. Sure, on the 2024 the towing capacity is higher and you get more power, and you have a heads up display option and a rear locker, but the overall packaging of the 2023 is better, in my opinion - the second row folds flat in the 2023, where in the 2024 they have the "tumble forward" design which eats up usable space, the rear wiper folds away when not in use in the 2023 while it stays on the rear glass on the 2024, the swing out rear door is exactly the same as other serious offroaders like the Wrangler, Bronco, Defender, so not sure why the 2024 flip up design is more "off road worthy", the 2023 is narrower for better maneuverability on narrow offroad trails (like the current 4Runner), embedding climate controls in the digital display, including seat heat and vent controls, is harder to use off road. And, finally, we don't even get much better, if not exactly the same, fuel economy than the old, extremely reliable V8 in the 2023 - this, with a new 10 speed transmission. I know you mentioned that a hybrid is coming, but how much more money will that cost? Seems like Toyota did a reskin, added a few features, and then priced it much higher - that's it.
@chibbyylol11 ай бұрын
Just more trims now so hard to compare. The 460's luxury is basically the 550s premium+ / base luxury with the top trim, luxury+, not having an equivalent. one is also getting more vehicle (bigger vehicle) and much more power (+50hp and 150lb-ft of torque) on top of the 1-2 mpg gains. that's quite substantial
@CeeJay59111 ай бұрын
@@chibbyylol I guess everyone has their own definition of "substantial". Also, the 2023 luxury does have additional options which are on the vehicle here - the offroad package and the sport design package - so I think that this 2023 does match up with the luxury+, for 10k less.

Gx460 has it's problems. I should know since I own one. Coolant leaks are common like the valley plate. Costs thousands to fix. Not to mention the weak plastic radiator tends to crack every 60k miles. The transmission is fragile when you hit higher mileage. Solenoids commonly fail and people end up chasing the problem down a rabbit hole and end up replacing the whole transmission. The cheap plastics in the interior eventually creak and the adhesives used to hold them together fall apart causing more creaking. Also common is the KDSS lean that drives owners nuts.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this beholder believes the older has smoother more aerodynamic lines than the newer Transformer look. And, the Overtrail Plus is the only trim option I would consider and that trim would be close to 82k before dealer adjustment/markup, accessories, and then fees plus taxes. can you say 90k after DMV fees and insurance, and that is with no dealer adjustment. Of course I will pay no dealer adjustment but would wait another two years until they realize not everyone will acquiesce to that. New interior is more sparse and utilitarian. And the only other negative of the newer one is parking and maneuverability in parking lots since it is larger. The towing increase is appealing for a smaller travel trailer. Anything more than like 21 feet and 5500 lbs a pickup would be preferable.

I love old school GX 460. Just bought new 2023 model on sale for 55K. I had 2015 model before, but it started leaking oil after 7 years and 40-50 thousand miles. The Lexus dealership said it would cost 5-6K to repair, so I sold it. I bought used Lexus RX 350 after that, but never liked it. BTW, I like rear gate on GX 460. It takes 1-2 seconds to open or close. Electric gate on RX 350 took like 10 seconds to open and close and sometimes it would not open or close. Also that pad on GX 460 is very good for zooming the map. Especially when you're driving. Way easier and safer to zoom than on the touch screen. I'm surprized there is no zoom button on the stearing wheel.

You bought a new 2023 gx460 for how much? What trim model? We’ve been looking for a while and they re not wanting to discount much smh. CONGRATS!!

@@alexwalten7 I bought brand new 2023 gx460 premium for 55K in December in Los Angeles. MSRP is 64K. They are in stock right now. At the end of January there was a New Year sale. Sale price was about 59K. I managed to bring price down to 55K. Actually I don’t see many GXs in LA. The gas mileage I’m getting in LA traffic is about 10-11 mpg. Many people are buying electric these days not only to save on gas, but to be able to drive in a car pool lane on a freeway. Maybe that’s why the price in LA is lower than in other cities / states. Not sure. I work from home and don’t drive much, so I don’t care about 10 mpg when I go to a grocery store or visit friends on weekends. I used to have 2015 model which started leaking oil after 7 years and required expensive repair. I was getting about 20 mpg on freeway. I don’t know where that reliability myth is coming from. I don’t think GX 460 is more reliable than other Lexus or Toyota models. I get used to 2015 GX and tried driving RX350 for a year, but then bought brand new 2023 GX model again.

For some reason the edit doesn’t work. The sale was at the end of December. I bought the car at the end of December, around Christmas.

The new GX looks amazing only issue is the plastic dash. They should have leather on the dashboard. For a luxury SUV thats a letdown
@ckm-mkc11 ай бұрын
No, it will just shrink & fail in hot climates like every other leather dash. A good quality plastic is much more durable and Toyota knows that.

As a current version owner…. I have to say the new one looks way better. One thing I’m not sure is the twin turbo engine. We bought our gx because it is supposed to be reliable so time will have to tell if this new generation is as good as the old one. Regarding the review; I really like your dynamic with your son! Tommy always does a really nice job reviewing things! Good job mom and dad!

I'm with Tommy on the interior... +1 on the buttons and dials (Roman wth?)... also the screen on the old one is fine, what do you need it bigger for? This one's looks like a highway patrol car. The old one much more bucks looking, with the analog gauges etcetera. I'll also take the old school small sunroof over the gargantuan Pano roof that looks like it won't even open? Someone correct me on that. So, in summary I'll take the new model's form factor, its size and better rear cargo utility/seat configuration and conventional hatch (finally!!), combined with the old dash, roof and CD player!

You can order the new one with a solid roof. I have sunroofs in all my cars and I pretty much never open them. It's nice in theory, in practice it never gets used.

Saw the new one in person yesterday and I must say I prefer the old one. The most annoying thing about the new one is the hood bulge, not good for off-roading unless you are heavily relying on cameras.

Considering that dealers have been asking over MSRP for new models I can expect 5k markup on the new GX. The current one can be purchased new 4-5k below MSRP easy so price difference may be bigger than expected.

Another great video! I don’t understand why people say that the swing gate is a negative on the GX460. I never hear people make this same argument about the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, which both have a swing gate that opens on the traffic side.
@jonlosito20049 ай бұрын
I think the problem is that unlike the others, the swing gate on the old GX felt pretty heavy for most people, and it probably looked awkward. I personally don't mind the swing gate cuz it's neat and quirky. I can see why most people would prefer Auto lift gates instead cuz they often take these to grocery stores like Walmart and such. And most people don't off road these because of ground clearance.

If you put all terrain tires on the Premium version, you now have a very good vehicle for getting around town if bad weather and light off roading. The lockers might be absent but this thing will be a beast without having to step up in trim level/cost. But won't look as cool ;)
