By far the best part of this video is how his 2 Door Jeep, minus him killing it, pretty much walked up and down that obstacle. It really gave him Jeep little issues and all the Jeep has is an LSD in the rear and decent M/T. The 4 Door Jeep, Bronco and Taco all struggled. Not to mention the Defender having its issues…Love how it shows how capable cheaper Jeeps are and you don’t need thousands of dollars in mods to wheel decent trails.

One of two of the most incredibly educating videos on off-road capability comparisons I’ve ever seen-and the second is your FIRST video in this series!! Thanks so much for the education. I have a Range Rover L405 and use it-not just at valet stands-on the trails of Utah. I had a reservation for the new Defender as soon as Land Rover opened their list. I cancelled it when I watched that nightmare on your first/second Defenders. I promptly put down a deposit on a Bronco. After 15 years of being a Range Rover loyalist, I’m sad to say that Land Rover has forfeited their claim to serious off-roading capability. And they had the chance to again solidify it with the Defender. So very very sad. LAND ROVER: change your *#&*! tire package options!!!

You can't judge a Fish by its ability to Climb a Tree, a Defender is an Off Roader not a Rock Crawler. It's an vehical with open Differencial and a good traction control system, designed to go Off Roading hand in hand with 4x4's. Sometime that is meant to you a drive quality of a car and off raod capibility of an 4x4 with comfort of a SUV. How hard is it to understand, an open differencial vehicals are not made for Rocks Crawling, no matter how good traction control system they have. FYI, I am not trying to defence Defender here but the idoicracy these people are presenting here is untolorable. Toyota makes good stuff. It's reliable and there is a strong aftermarket but they sure have gotten heavy over the years. The Tacoma of today is a big hefty beast compared to the light Tacos of the late 90s-early 00s. The current Tacoma is almost the same weight as the single cab GM C/K 1500 of the 90s. There is only a few hundred pounds difference (depending on the model) between the two and if you start adding a couple people, a full ice chest, tent(s) recovery gear, etc. you're driving what is in effect, a full size American pickup from 20 years ago. All the TRD gadgets and goodies can't fix that. I know the Jeeps have gotten bigger and heavier too but they retained their solid axles. You can have real lockers from the factory. You can fit big tires without a lot of lift. That's why Jeeps are still the best trail rigs despite the fancy AWD systems in the Bronco and the Land Rover. Rugged and simple just seems to work best.

It's so crazy to see I guess certain people just WANT to do certain trails but there have been a few times I've been in my 2017 Discovery "stock" that I just tell myself it's just not worth scratching my doors, breaking a headlight or tail light or breaking something else. It's nice to see the capability at someone else's expense honestly. I'll stick to more easy/moderate overland trails that I can get to a dispersed camp site and enjoy my beer or whiskey without a damaged truck.

@@brianm5753 I would say that although it was kitted out... the driver did lack would have been more wise to winch over the obstacle than cause damage. There is no shame in it. The winch is a tool you paid for use it. Tacoma is a capable truck but it has a longer wheel base which has a disadvantage in this particular style of obstacle. In other obstacles it can be advantageous.

The Defender is garbage. These new vehicles are totally different and lost most of their capabilities. Air suspension is a nightmare. I have it in my RAM Rebel and it's hot garbage. Yes, being able to level on the fly and change approach angles is nice, but it pales in comparison to my Wrangler. SFA articulation is unmatched. The auto 4x4/AWD is horrible. Offroad, you want it LOCKED into 4x4. When it jumps in and out, they tend to get their innards chewed up. It's unreliable in extreme conditions. I've taken my Wrangler through harder trails with no locker. Shit, I've watched someone do crazy shit and they forgot to engage 4x4. Smaller, narrow, tall vehicles do very well on these technical trails. I do love the Bronco's trail turn assist ... that's some cool tech. I have my eye on a 2 door Badlands but that IFS just makes me cringe

@jerrymyahzcat 2 жыл бұрын
Articulation is mostly irrelevant. Traction is what’s important. Half the time a solid axle will articulate but the lower end may be touching the ground but all the weight is on the other end so the drooped end is touching but has 0 grip or traction so it looks like it is doing something but isn’t really. A Land Rover with independent all round can do as much with 1 or 2 wheels cocked. The 4WD system in a Land Rover negates the need for lockers and solid axles which frankly are rubbish on-road.

I also have a motorcycle license, and have competed in autocross (videos on my channel) with the SCCA. I did commercial lawnmowing when I was in High School and I am quite adept with a zero turn mower. I was stationed in Japan for two years and had a drivers license while I was there so I've driven on the opposite side of the road and the '92 Honda Prelude I had was a manual transmission, so I was shifting with my left hand. I've had a drivers license since 1996 and when I had my learners permit my dad had me drive his 1985 Honda Civic sedan 5-speed (with all of 60 hp) on the DC Beltway. I've towed everything from lawnmower trailers to my M1102 HUMVEE trailer, to car haulers, multiple enclosed cargo trailers the largest of which was 24' long and 8' wide inside, to my camper which is 36'6" from hitch to bumper. I agree he used too much skinny pedal for dramatics and perhaps to help their buddies at Ford look good 😆. Independent and honest reviews are hard when you get hand outs and help from dealers that we normal folks would NEVER get. Ex Discount on a Bronco... getting a launch edition with out reserving one, getting rims to use to get your defender out of the trail... the list goes on but those are just a few oh and picking up a TRX at the factory! 😑 at sticker price...

Another great vid! Amazing what a stock Willys can do; even with a manual transmission. LSDs don’t get enough credit IMO. Loved the parting scene...

These guys should try the trails in Washington! We have entire trails just like that first rock obstacle. He did great getting them down. Definitely will take my Grey Goat on this trail someday! Next episode looks awesome!! We just did Grouse Creek in Mullan, ID and it was rated a 9. Video to come soon!

this video made me think twice about the Willys Jeep, which I thought was built almost exclusively for mall-crawling and gravel-grade off-roading. What a beast. I guess a Jeep is still a Jeep no matter the outfit it's wearing.

Really looking forward to the next episode with the built Defender! It looks to be pretty capable but that last clip.... Unibody gonna wheel lift, what can you say....

Not even that it's unibody, it's that it's four-wheel independent suspension. It has no articulation so that's why it's going to lift wheels like crazy. All those Toyotas that couldn't keep their front wheels on the ground were full frame vehicles, but they had independent front suspension.
