I was going up the hills and baby mountains and I had the cruise set at 75mph. The thing that shocked me was it never slowed down in cruise climbing or seemed to be laboring at all. All the cars in front of me would slow down because they couldn't hold their speed on the baby mountains and I would come barreling up on them as they faded and I didn't. It was the only time I wished I had adaptive cruise control. But given its a tradesman that isn't an option. But a quick tap of the brake and the exhaust brake kicking in got me right down to them almost instantly. Love this truck.

I currently own a 2018 Duramax work truck. I wish that the manufacturers would stop adding useless crap to their work trucks. If you need all those “driver assists” and sensors to pull a trailer safely then you probably shouldn’t do it. The powertrains are good but I don’t need a tv in my dashboard or massaging seats and cameras all around. As a working man who pulls a 30 foot gooseneck every day, what I need is torque, good outward visibility ( of which none of the current trucks have ) and less useless crap that costs a fortune to fix after a few years. What I certainly don’t need is the 1000$ a month payment they require you to make to own one of these trucks. I have owned many trucks over the years and I have only kept one of them which is the best truck I ever had. What is it? A 1977 gmc crew cab. It never lets me down, has great outward visibility and zero useless crap and is very cheap to maintain. My dream truck would be any of the current drivetrains in an old upright square body.

Best way to gain visibility when towing a trailer is with cameras. Or I guess you could extend the side mirrors another foot or two out the sides of the cab. I consider Tow Haul mode and grade control and the exhaust brake integration on my 2011 Duramax to be fantastic "driver assists" that help maintain control on steep down grades when towing. With the old trucks a lot more skill was needed than exists with the vast majority of drivers on the road today. But if you want a basic truck all you need to do is buy the regular cab work trucks in SRW or DRW configuration. No one is forcing you to buy the platinum trim versions so nothing really to whine about.
@danielj32306 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Sampson I did buy a regular cab srw 2500hd truck. No carpet, no leather, no heated seats. The most bare-bones truck I could find. It cost me $57000! I hate the newer LED headlights that blind on-coming traffic without offering more visibility, they don’t “project” as well as the regular headlights I had on my 2015 gmc. The exhaust brake never does what I want it to do so I never use it. I always use the tow/haul mode which holds the gear longer before shifting and downshifts downhill under braking as I would do if I could have gotten a manual trans which nobody offers anymore. I just hate to pay for crap that I don’t want or need. I admit that abs, stability control ect has made these trucks safer but I’m sorry, no truck is worth 85000$

Now it's all culminating in the 2019 1500, and this 2020 HD line. They are really taking it to Ford and GM. It would have been unfathomable a couple decades ago to be able to buy a dually truck that can tow 17.5 tons, let alone one with a factory-supplied winch, air suspension, etc. This really looks like a fantastic product.

Ford sells the most vehicles by brand in the us. Ford also doubles the sales of trucks compared to Ram and nearly doubles GM. So take your stats with a grain of salt. Divide out the recalls per vehicle and Ford is actually lower than the other brands especially in the truck segment. Ford has more but less per vehicle. Ford and Mercedes and BMW have spiked in the last 3 years because they're not playing the foot drag like all the other manufacturers with the Takata situation. 70 percent of the recalls from these three are airbags (they're the only 3 being progressive).

For the first time in years I can store all the tools and test equipment I need, completely out of site. Fold the seats flat as needed and put environment sensitive equipment in that area and still have tons of room. So far passenger wise everyone has been super happy with the back seats. Because it's easier to shift quickly without looking, keeps your right hand close to the wheel during shift changes, it's what us ham fisted guys are accustomed to. Think plow trucks, cop cars, off road, poor conditions with gloved hands, injured fingers. Column shifters work really well. There are so many men who love them, we have big hands, and like to keep our eyes on the road and the ladies. BMW I drive and others require too much thought. Placing things in logical places with muscle memory incorporates correct movements during high stress and emergency situations. For example, trailer brake controllers should always be near right hand and shift lever and steering, not in upper left like Chevy did.

Here’s all you need to know... The Duramax is the only one NOT using a junk ass CP4 injection pump for 2019. Shame on Cummins for opting to use a CP4, major hit in reliability. They had 15 years of good service from the CP3 and now it’s gone, just because they wanted a few thousand more PSI for rail pressure. Should’ve switched to the HP4 like GM did. Much more reliable pump and it meets the higher rail pressure capability that all the OEs are seeking currently. Can’t even consider the Cummins to be the most reliable engine anymore, those CP4s have caused nothing but trouble for GM, Ford, and I believe VW as well.
@clinton2196 жыл бұрын
Marcus Mar the CP4 is reliable...so long as the operator isn’t a complete idiot.
@Blackneck19946 жыл бұрын
Clinton no, it’s not. It’s a complete gamble. People running bad fuel, not changing filters, and not draining the water separator just exaggerates the problem. I’ve seen an LML truck that had a FASS on it since new lose the CP4 at 5,000 miles. Even if the failure rate is low, that kind of stuff really never happened with CP3s. Period. Even when a CP3 fails it doesn’t ruin the rest of the fuel system like CP4s do. Roller lifters were a terrible idea and it shows, the solid lifters in the CP3 were never an issue.
@clinton2196 жыл бұрын
Marcus Mar the fact that the truck had a FASS on it could be the culprit for the failure. All it takes is starving it one time to cause damage. If you change the filters and don’t prime the system correctly, you’re damaging the pump. The CP4 gets a bad name because most people are stupid.
@Blackneck19946 жыл бұрын
Clinton no, the CP4 gets a bad name because it’s a flawed design. Wether it has a factory lift pump feeding it in a Ford application or without one in a GM application. Fact of the matter is that with the same maintenance practices and good quality of fuel, CP3s will last longer. And once again- they will not ruin the rest of the fuel system when they fail.
@clinton2196 жыл бұрын
Marcus Mar the CP4 only ruins the fuel system if the operator keeps driving with issues. The pump doesn’t shit out and immediately ruin the system. No surprise though. I mean, if you caused damage to your fuel pump, you can’t be expected to pay enough attention to drivability issues either. Lol. It will tell you if there’s a problem. Drastic differences between command pressure and actual pressure is the trick. You could argue that one shouldn’t have to pay attention to such things. I’d say, those people don’t need diesel pickups. Ever seen the inside of a big rig? Hundreds of data readings. There a reason. You HAVE to pay attentions. You HAVE to follow procedure. You HAVE to get good quality fuel. If the Bosch pump was awful, Cummins wouldn’t put one on the side of their engine. GM was stupid for not including a lift pump. As for ford, I’ve literally never heard of one crapping out that wasn’t due to operator error. They don’t just grenade.

Why would you want the Cummins in a power wagon? To turn it into a parking lot queen?? What would 850 foot pounds of torque gain you on dirt? You do realize the Cummins is over 500 pounds heavier than a 5.7 right? That would require stiffer suspension and reduce articulation. Not to mention a hit on the already low payload and towing numbers. Plus good luck if you ever got it stuck. And lastly, finding diesel in remote locations can be extremely hard. Not sure what the exact reason was but I would have rather had the new crew cab back seat then have to get a mega cab. Ram has had a poor rollover rating I would love to see that talked about and if any changes to this old cab were implemented. I guess maybe they just didn’t want to pour too much money in for whatever reason. The HD crew cab feels crowded compared to the new 1500 crew cab. Overall a lot of good changes but for a platform that has been milked for so long I wanted a better update. 1000 ftlb of torque is awesome wonder how it will stack up against GM 10 speed Duramax. I don’t feel much love in the 2500 Diesel area with Ram. You get 370/850 and it just doesn’t go like a 6.7L Ford or Duramax.
