Another factor is that you are seated lower in the cab inside the Chevy which I don't think is as good for off-roading as the driving position in the Ram or the even a Ford Raptor. @matthewanderson99122 жыл бұрын
I noticed on the weight slip your drive axle on the ZR2 was at 3400 pounds. I’m not sure what the RGAWR is on the ZR2 but a typical Silverado Z71 1500 will be about 3800 pounds. So based off that you were within 400 pounds of the max rear axle rating with just you in the truck. I’d say that’s why you were getting the warning from the truck when Nathan was with you plus any extra camera equipment you may have had. Sounds like that trailer is very tongue heavy which is pretty typical for trailers like that. That’s why they are pushing the limits of a half ton truck even though they “only” weigh 7,000 pounds. Also as for fuel economy I think every Ram you ever test says 4.7 on the Ike towing at a minimum. I tend to think maybe 4.7 is as low as that fuel economy reading will go.

The 8sp isn't what makes it good at going down hill. More gears is better in that regard because the trans can keep the engine in the correct RPM easier. What makes the Ram TRX good downhill as far as braking performance goes, is the super charger. The super charger sucks a lot of power to spin. That extra drag makes it act similar to an exhaust brake, only in this case its basically an intake brake.

The problem with the IKE Gauntlet towing test is that it naturally and exponentially favors Turbo Charged engines. Like a 6.2L vs a 3.5L ecoboost at sea level is a nose and nose race. At 2 miles above sea level, the turbocharger will always overperform. Given that 90-95% of us don’t live in the Rockies, it produces skewed and often misleading results

So what your saying is that the Chevy can hang on low-lying flat areas? Living in the Great Smoky Mountains and pulling a camper the ecoboost is a no brainer. It’s really confusing why Ford and Toyota are the only people who use a twin turbo v-6 as their premier engine. Only time will tell about the durability of these, but there are tons of high mileage ecoboost around if you look. The torque curve of a forced induction engine simply cannot be matched by any normal NA V8. I spent the last several years owning a 5.7 Limited Toyota Tundra. Best truck I’d ever owned up to that point. So far in my 30k miles on my ecoboost F150 there is no comparison when it comes to towing. As far as MPG goes, the tundra 5.7 is notorious for bad fuel economy. So the ecoboost is somewhat of an upgrade. However, put some weight behind it, or keep your foot in it and it really isn’t any better than any other modern truck.

What's the GAWR for the rear axle on the Chevy? It's got 3400 lbs. on it per the scales. I've noticed several trucks can't legally tow their max tow rating because the tongue weight required would overload the GAWR for the rear axle. Perhaps the Chevy's computer picked up on the sagged suspension, causing the notification of being overweight? I've mentioned this before, but I wish y'all would include axle weight ratings more, as opposed to relying solely on the mfg's tow rating capacities.

Chevy and Ram share axles in all of their pickup trucks. The supplier is AAM which is a joint venture. Not sure which size each make picks for their particular trim levels. Either way pretty much ALL Mid Size and 1500 trucks will be over GVW when towing at max tow rating. It is just a theoretical max tested with a driver and who knows how much fuel. If you have a 4 person family, dog, some stuff in the bed and a full tank of gas then you probably have 500lbs to 800lbs of room left for the tongue weight.

I have NEVER had a good Ram - I've had 3. Resale is horrid and sure they look and sound good - that is where it ends - for me it did anyway. They are a 3 year truck - sell before warranty is out. I just ordered a ZR2, I drove the dealers truck a week or so ago(the owner has one) - - I have back injuries and totally expected the seats to be horrible - sure they were stiff, but also new. The soft GMC leather seats will crease and mar quickly (experience) and the Chev seats will still look good. HATE perforated holes in the seats too..always fill up with leather conditioner guk. I can't get past the front end of the GMC AT4x - they all look the same - at least the ZR2 LOOKS different - had the AT4 spiced it up a bit, I may have ordered one. Coming from a F250 Diesel (riddled with problems) - ALWAYS a "wearable item" and not covered under my extended warranty, has just plain pissed me off and ruined my feelings towards that brand for now. GM doing the subscription thing - is ridiculous and I wont be extending Google anything - I have a phone that works - so, no thanks. Fuel economy on the ZR2...mehhh.....well, my F250 sucking back 16.2L/km at $2.40 per LITRE has no bragging rights either. My only ZR2 fear is the fuel management system issues causing lifter failures - this will be my FIRST GM since 2001...I will never hear the end of it from friends/family if its a turd.

There is usually some info on hitch non WD vs WD weights. For example my 08 Suburban has 5,000 lb limit w/o WD vs 12,000 with WD 4.11 gears. Did that change with these newer trucks because of liability factors.
@667Gurba2 жыл бұрын
American trailers and towing is just insane. The caravan is twice the weight of a European caravan of comparable size and you put an insane amount of weight on the hitch severely affecting the handling of the car. In Europe we have the trailer axles approximately at the center balance point thus putting about 75kg on the hitch so the hitch weight doesn't affect the handling of the car noticeably.
@markcoopers19302 жыл бұрын
Lol. Americans hate handling and moving the steering wheel on principle. To be fair, there's a lot more long straight roads, open space, and highways here than most other countries. Anyone who doesn't have to tow small to medium trailers to different job sites for work every day seems to take no stock in handling at all. But that's why you see so many SUVs, drag races are all anyone cares about, and trucks are bigger here than most other markets. Anyone can drive a tank if you just have to go straight ahead. You will see folks floor it down a straightaway in a twin turbo V6 high end SUV or a Pickup only to have to slam on the breaks and go 20 mph under the speed limit for a set of gentle S turns. Floor it again on the next straight, then slam on the brakes for a gentle curve in the road. Throw simple elevation changes into the mix, and you might see them pull over to the side of the road to let you pass. Meanwhile regular economy cars can make the same stretch without even thinking about brakes. It's really ridiculous. And the worst part: they don't feel incompetent, heck don't even see anything wrong in any way when they do this.

Also add Canada into the USA driving distance mix. My usual weekend jaunt from Vancouver, BC, Canada to Kelowna which usually takes about 4 hours, if I did that in Europe I would have gone through four different COUNTRIES compared to me where I have barely traversed one third the distance to the next province (Alberta!) Driving in the USA and Canada is insane in terms of actual geographic distances! What we consider a "Small" weekend driving distance here is the European equivalent of driving from Hamburg, Germany to Naples, Italy! EVERYTHING is larger in North America: people, vehicles and driving distances! It's just the way it is here! My friend's winterized Keystone Montana fifth wheel camper trailer is 28,000 lbs (he changed the wheels and axles on the Montana to beefier ones!) and actually has to have a CDL (Commercial Driver's Licence) to drive it everywhere it's so big and heavy once he paired it with a Ford F450 Superduty Dually truck! I do must admit though, that the 4-season winterized version of the Montana is one of the most luxurious rolling apartments (flats!) that's for general retail sale. It's actually LARGER and much more luxurious than my current fixed-place apartment! When I retire, I am buying either a fully-winterized Montana or a New Horizon fifth wheel to travel everywhere in Canada and the USA! It will be a LOT CHEAPER than buying a condo! V

Tow/haul mode is supposed to change shift patterns to reduce wear and increase control when towing. This means it will hold higher rpms for longer. Higher rpms usually means lower mileage. Wear is most prominent with high heat and if a transmission is shifting more, that increases heat.

The supercharger makes the difference @ 11,000' elevation. The N/A truck is wheezing, and the S/C truck is getting force fed oxygen. That is why WWII aircraft started using superchargers. I would like to also know how changing the location of that hitch WRT the centerline of the axle changes the dynamics of the suspension, because that looks like a terrible idea. People that buy these trucks are gonna tow things like boats, SxS, ATVs, etc with them. They are taking them to the deer lease. They are taking them camping or elk hunting. On crappy roads or trails. Test that.
