While this was from two years ago I find people still don’t use the Ranger 10 options as well as they could. You can set the number of gears available on the stick. So if your worries about it jumping between 5th and 6th you can max it out at using only 5 speeds so it won’t ever try 6th while climbing etc. I do lots of climbing and tight bends and setting it to use 4 automatic gears max means I can just forget it until I’m at the top. Always sports mode ti use any selected gear too.

Not just in the ranger but in most all new vehicles…..most people who get into new vehicles have no clue on all the options their vehicles are equipped with….and forget about anybody reading the owners manuel….people would never even look at it for the whole life of the vehicle….I myself love to read over the owners manual for any vehicle I have from front to end!!!

You guys have misidentified the “ECT PWR” several times now. It doesn’t add power or change the engine at all, it holds the gearing in lower gears for longer and helps prevent early shifting (at the cost of gas-mileage) to make towing and mountain-climbing easier.

For me putting the Ranger into cruise control (set to 50mph) was the way to go. Then it uses all the engine breaking it can get to try to hold set speed.

I think at the end of the day it all comes down to who will make more trips up/down the hill. The Ranger and the Tacoma are both noted as extremely dependable trucks. The Tacoma has not had a break in sales/service (in the US) so the Ranger will have to once again prove itself as a dependable pickup. Time will name the true ruler of the roost. Both trucks will be fine with mild towing on occasion (like all other midsize trucks). If you're going to do any regular towing with moderate or heavier weight, you should probably get a different truck. It's not like the midsize trucks are much cheaper than a half-ton anyway.

@@ShersGarage 1/2 tons carry quite a good amount of incentive though. That might change now that the Ranger is here, but I've seen a few F-150s with $7-10k off MSRP. Cars and Zebras I think that's what most people do who buy midsize and half ton trucks, more recreational use than moderate or heavy regular towing. These trucks seem very well suited to a person or family who tows around 5-6k once or twice a month.

These kind of trucks are actually really good for towing if you don't go over 5k and live in a reasonably flat area of the country. They have more power and sometimes even more towing capacity then a majority of older trucks people use all the time.

From the video, the Ranger appears to have an elastomeric jounce bumper (not a bump stop) which is designed to be a supplemental spring. It works to make the suspension progressive, providing an increasing spring rate transition into full compression. It is intended to be an active part of the suspension. As such, it should have been touching the leaf spring during your test.

When doing work like towing up a hill, it's no surprise that the mpg is more even. The EcoBoost mpg advantage comes into play when CRUISING where you don't need the max power capacity. Then that less reciprocating weight will provide more mpg. When you need the power to tow up the hill then similar amounts of fuel will be used. It's not like the EcoBoost makes free energy. It's just a smaller engine that can still match the power of the larger engines when in boost (replacement for displacement) . And it's in that later mode when climbing a hill.

Thanks for freezing your butts off to provide us with real world tow tests. I owned a Tacoma with the 4.0 and sold it for a 2018 with the 3.5. I was shocked how much the towing quality dropped with the newer engine. I know it looks as good on paper as the older 4.0, but my engine constantly shifts and groans towing the same trailer. Add larger tires and you cannot tow in higher elevations or inclines worth a squat. IMHO, it’s better to go with the Ranger since the turbo helps compensate for altitude and incline challenges when it comes to torque and that 10-speed stops the extreme gear switches.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing the various test results of the new Ranger and I’m pleased to see that it’s performing as admirably as it is. I had a ranger, bought it new. The rear end went out as well as the transfer case and the front hub broke all within 2 years. Bought a Tacoma to replace it.... Zero problems and still buying the best trucks ever built... oh what a feeling!

TED Schmitt that’s not true at all. They can simply keep price down if they want to. The reason why Toyota and Honda doesn’t load a lot of technology into their vehicles is because they are very conservative. They rely on their brand name to sell. Any technology in a vehicle gives a higher chance of problem which lowers their rate of reliability. They usually wait 3-4 years at least before following up with the market.

I just pulled a 10 k trailer all the way from Phoenix to Dallas and my 2017 colorado diesel did it with 14 mpg and no problem! I have firestone ride rite airbags and it held up that heavy trl no problem!

Don't buy the Tacoma. Ive had Tacoma on and off since 1997. 3 in Total now. They never break down and always work when you turn the key. No drama, no surprises! I did have a Ranger briefly in 2000, it always over heated, leaked oil and had transmission issues. The motor ended up exploding! Very exciting! Never knew what to expect on the road! I miss it.

Hey Guys, Great video, been watching for years. A few things to note. I run a 2017 Taco crew SB, 6 speed manual. Stock gears are 4:30. Aftermarket 2” lift Bilstien 5100 on 33” Duratracs load E. If you order the Sport and you get the moon roof it adds a butt load of head room. I’m 6’1”. I tow a 5300 lb loaded rv 24’ in length. I live in BC Canada and I’m surrounded by mnt passes. My Taco tows it amazing! I run and I highly recommend the Curt ECHO Bluetooth Brake Controller. It’s a plug and go system that is very responsive and can be activated independently. Also I get to your GPM conversion 9 MPG average to a tank with the trailer on. The Taco 3.5 is very peaky but with the manual just keep it at 3500 rpm or above and sit back and relax. This is a lifted trailer as well so I can pull it deep into the backcountry for hunting as well as late into the season in snow. Spend the money and get the Taco manual guys. Your resale will thank you. The Auto’s are slushOmatics and the smaller displacement engines like the Ranger will never hold back on the descents, still no replacement for displacement . This is just my opinion. Side note- I’m a commercial driver also run private hot shot for years and still love my LBZ. Cheers. Look forward the the videos in the future.

I'm a truck driver as well I think engine braking on the 4 is not effective but a electric brake on the trailer and a exhaust brake on the 4 banger would save gas and be more efficient. diesel trucks depend on heavy drivetrain drag and big Piston surface area that's harder for compression at high rpms. A small gasser is never going to engine brake effectively not for the weight maby empty. IMHO 🤷🏻

Db is not a linear scale. Every 3 db is double the sound energy level. Every -3 is half. 70db is double 67db. 6db is double 3. 112 is double 109. That's energy. Humans perceive a doubling of the sound level every +10 db. And half as loud at -10db. Either way when your scale reads a difference of 10 it sounds twice as loud to a human. +3db is significant in either case. I don't think the "bump stops" on the Ranger are meant to be hard stops which may be the reason you felt a smoother ride. It looks like the "bump stop" is designed to work as a decelerator. Almost a mini coil spring cushion. This would mask a jarring pot hole or bottoming out from extra weight over a dip. The Tacoma looked like a metal hard stop that was bent from impact or missing a rubber piece. You may have lost a snubber there. Pretty fair comparison. The full sized trucks downshift and hold speed without brakes WAY better. I would have used cruise control for both up and downhill. I have noticed my truck uses the actual speed versus the CC input to determine when and how much to downshift going downhill. Might have helped with the hunting shifts.

She wants a Ranger but fell in love with the Taco (I love Taco's too, but not the automotive kind...wink wink) We are waiting on a Ranger for her final decision. No surprise that the Tacoma holds speed better down hill, it's got a bigger displacement engine (3.5 l. VS Ranger 2.3 l.) so more compression. Again no surprise the Ranger does better up hill, the turbo of the 2.3 makes a more efficient engine. Thanks for this real world test showing a bit of hunting on the 10 speed transmission of the Ranger and quality of ride of the parabolic spring of the Ranger.

David Cox right, but the transmission is using the resistance of the engine to slow the truck. A 2.3 liter 4 cyl is going to have a lot less resistance than a 3.5 liter six, and the programming of the powertrain control won’t allow the engine to exceed redline. That’s why it wouldn’t downshift below fourth gear.

Preach. Tacomas feel so outdated comfort/ride/acceleration wise. There isn't really a defining reason to get one other than to have other people tell you "thats a reliable truck" so you can pat yourself on the back. Resale value on them is a bit better I guess but who really cares? Resale value on trucks in general is better than other vehicles. The durability/resale value on a taco isn't enough for me to sacrifice comfort day to day.

The 3.5/6AT in the Tacoma is a terrible combo for a truck. I used to have one and I hated it. It would downshift to 4th gear to maintain 70mph over a Florida interstate overpass. Hell, even a stiff headwind had it downshifting to 5th.

You have to remember they said the tacoma had a 3.91 rear end while the ranger had a 3.73 rearend. Meaning the tacomas has shorter gears so more towing capacity and increased acceleration but higher rpms on the highway and worse mpgs

In the Tacoma he was pumping the breaks, essentially, slowing down slower. Which shortens the finish line, for the Tacoma. In the Ranger he braked solid slowing the truck down quicker allowing more road to travel ahead. Which allowed the Ranger to pick up another breaking score.

Couple years ago they tested the GMC Canyon on the Ike. Rated for 7000 lbs. Their trailer was well over 6,000 lbs. As I remember it, only one brake application downhill and it had more than enough power uphill. Mr Truck had plenty of room to get in and sit comfortably with his hat.

Yup, the diesel 4 banger had better mileage I think and only 1 brake application. I do think it was a little slower and slightly louder than the ranger. The GMC canyon was fully loaded in Denali trim for as tested almost $48,000. A fully loaded ranger is about 48k aswell... pretty crazy

The Ford does have a tach. It is a digital tach that is accessed on the left hand screen. It has a digital circular tachometer that you can put up on the left instead of the tachometer you have on there for the video. When you put in in sport it puts it up automatically as well.

I have that gauge cluster in my ford and you can switch the left side to display a still small but larger digital rpm display. Lots of people are swapping in the MKZ gauge cluster into theirs too.

I’m a Ford truck guy. I’ve owned 3 Rangers, and loved them. I currently own an F-150. I also like Toyota’s. Our last couple of cars have been Toyotas. There is one thing this new Ranger is missing, that if I was buying a new truck this year, I would pick the Tacoma. That is you can’t get a manual transmission in the Ranger. I know there not better, but there something I enjoy about shifting my own gears. So the Tacoma would be my pick.

The new-for-2019 Ranger does not - repeat, does not - require the removal of the left front wheel in order to access the oil filter. Drawing from a source with knowledge of Ford service procedures, our January 3rd story stated that the oil filter on the 2.3-liter Ecoboost four-cylinder found in all U.S.-market Rangers would be removed by technicians via the left front wheel well, necessitating the removal of the wheel. While the written process provided to us listed the removal of a LF wheel arch access panel, held in place by nine fasteners, Ford North American product communications manager Mike Levine states only three fasteners need to be removed in order to peel back the flap to access the oil filter. The wheel does not have to be removed to facilitate this. You’ll want the wheel hard over, though. It’s a procedure similar to that of overseas models equipped with the 3.2-liter diesel. Hello Andre and Mr. Truck! Happy New Year! Now Mr Truck hasn’t anyone ever told you your supposed to put the grease inside the square opening of the hitch not on the slide in ball holder! But I’ll agree with both of you, the Ranger is definitely the one I would go with between the two. However I do own a 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4, V6 Ext Cab, that I regularly average 26 highway at the speed limits to 70 mph, with 18 city and combined at 22 mpg! I also regularly tow a 4,500 lbs travel trailer with the wife and 2dogs along with all our stuff at a CGVW of 9,560 lbs! On out last 4 month 4,500 mile trip, that started on February 6 and ended May 8 th. From our old house in the people’s republic of massachusetts, to sign papers to build a new house in Central Florida, the n take off for 4 months while the house was built. That trip was from fairly flat Central Florida up across the Panhandle, through parts of southern Louisiana, then to a beautiful place called Matagorda TX on the Gulf Coast for three weeks, where we were able to drop the trailer and setup camp then explore South Central TX. Then we headed northwest to The Rocky Mountains of CO and wandered all over the Pikes Peak to Laedville Areas, then back south east making our way back. All without a single problem or issue other than computer minded oil changes and tire rotation. So over an overall 48,000 miles so far not even burning or leaking a drop of oil over the 7,000-10,000 mile oil changes.

I’d love to see a video comparison with Chevy ZR2, Gladiator, and The Ranger with the 2inch level kit with Fox shocks given that it is an available upgrade now and covered under warranty. The approach angle is 34.5, break over angle is 23.5, and departure angle is 25.4 degrees. So I feel this upgrade option puts it on par with the Chevy for sure. I got these options with 360 copilot for my Ranger XLT and I think the Ranger is the most balanced mid size when considering off road capabilities, towing, cargo, and features like lane assist/360 copilot. I put a set of Ridge Grapplers 265/70/17 and it handles everything well. And it was $5-$10 grand less than Chevy Bison and $20k less than Gladiator Rubicorn.

You can access the rear camera when moving. Anything over 20mph put it in reverse and you can check on your trailer while moving forward.

I spent $35 USD on a Y-harness for my Taco that plugged right into the nav system and added a dedicated button for my back up camera... I can turn it on anytime I want as long as the truck is on. Took about 10-15 minutes to install and I don't have to risk dropping my tranny or killing someone if the computer interlocks decide they don't mind me putting it in reverse at 80mph.... I disagree. I think the Ranger has the better drivetrain and more comfortable suspension but the Tacoma looks better. The Tacoma looks big and burly and the Ranger's front end could be a car. Ford should definitely beef up the Ranger's front end look.

I think the head room issue in the Tacoma might be due to the power sunroof. I find a vehicle with a power sunroof has less head room than a solid roof. Especially at the sides

For my money, I'd personally go for the Ranger first, I like it's styling, and the fact the interior is more comfortable. That's one of my biggest complaints on the Toyota, seating comfort, it feels too cramped.

I love how people say things like for my money Id go for this and this and this for this reason. But it's always hilarious and it's the same with you, your reasons are all things that can be solved with a few extra bucks on the side and then you end up with a far more reliable vehicle at the end of the day. Cuz its a guarantee that the ranger is going to have issues with the turbo. It's not even a question. Personally I think you'd be better off getting a used tacoma and taking some of your savings and sprucing up the inside so its more comfortable. They're not bad cramped. We just live in a society of babies that trade reliability for comfort.

Probably already mentioned, but the head room problem for your hat was because the truck had the sunroof option. It lowers the ceiling by a couple of inches.

It seems that all these reviewers test a Tacoma with a sunroof, and brand X without, then say BrandX had more headroom. All car and trucks lose headroom with a factory sunroof that retracts into the roof.

I traded my 2019 Tacoma for a new Ranger. The prices nosedived for black Friday and I got a much better equipped Ranger Crew Cab Sport for $2000 more than my base Tacoma crew cab SR. I bought a 7 year Ford bumper to bumper warranty so reliability isn't really an issue lol. So far I'm ecstatic with the Ranger, way better power than the 4 cylinder Tacoma (obviously), way more headroom (I actually removed the sun visor on my Tacoma because it blocked more of my view) and way better seats. I get better fuel economy too and the 10 speed in the Ranger doesn't hunt gears and act a fool on the highway like the Tacoma 6 speed does. I lurk the Ranger forums and so far build quality and reliability seem decent (you'll see tons of complaints about the Tacoma but they sell a lot more trucks too). Talk smack if you want but there's a lot of low mileage used Tacomas for sale recently for a reason.

A downsized 2.3 liter gas engine that has the performance of a 3.5 is an engineering marvel, not because the power (because with a turbo it's "easy"), but because the emissions compliance, the fuel economy and, the most important when towing, engine braking. These days the most important thing to consider is the fuel injection system. Toyota has a dual injection system, so gasoline is injected behind the intake valve and directly into the engine. This cleans your valves. Ford uses direct injection only. The only way your valves get cleaned in a Ford is when you take the intake manifold off and scrub them by hand. Have fun with that.

I think the reason the ride is better in the Ranger vs the Tacoma is due to the bump stop is almost similar to a sumo spring bump stop which actually adds additional leveling ability and spring load rate. I agree with Mr. Trucks spring theory, however, with one spring I would be concerned about snapping the one and only leaf while under loaded conditions. I snapped a leaf once in my Tacoma before going to Dever Heavy load leaf pack and the remaining leafs are the only reason I did not end up in a situation of being stranded with a full payload and down vehicle in a “dead highway zone” with no mobile service. “To have two is to have one, and to have one is to have none”. In the end, I will always be a Toyota man but welcome the competition to push Toyota into more product development. Side note my Taco “tows” and absolute monster Off-Road.

There is a reason the Tacoma is the best selling midsize. I’ve owned a Toyota and IMO it’s a good truck but far from perfect. The Ranger seemed right there with the Tacoma with towing. We all have our likes and dislikes but I think the Rangers tech features and performance at 0-60 separates things for me a bit in this class. Curious now how the fuel mileage loop will look for these trucks. Please drag race a Colorado and Ranger so we can declare a winner.

I am not surprised. I owned a Tacoma for 4 years and towed a 4000 lb boat with it. It did not like the hills of SoCal, so I know it hated the gauntlet. Tow rating was 6400 for my '14 and that had to be going downhill with a stiff tailwind. Toyota Tacomas are mountain goats off road, but they blow at towing.

I love my 2019 Ranger Lariat. I get far better mileage than the claims sometimes hitting 30mpg on the thruway and it rides insanely wonderful I hate to use the analogy but it rides like a Cadillac. The power is insane I rarely get over 1/8th throttle.

great truck comparison, very empirical not all the bs found in a lot car/truck reviews. i wish the results were more clear cut, was surprised the ford 4 cyc got only tiny better mpg. i guess most people like me looking at these two are wondering how the ranger will hold up long term. the Tacoma's reliability is probably the biggest reason its so dominate. it will be interesting to see how both trucks sell and get priced by the end of the year. my tacoma is 14 years old (2005 1st gen) and its puzzling how little toyota has done to it in all these years other than raise the price.....I am going to give the ranger a hard look.

Parabolic springs are great for off road use because it allows more articulation BUT they suck under heavy loads, you’ll notice it will have crap for lane centering, it just floats all over the place

I just hit 39k on my 2016 Tacoma. I like my truck but I'm so tired of the stupid engine/transmission. Always hunting for gears and WEAK power. If the Ranger comes out with a capable, nice looking off road version (front lockers), that would be awesome! I personally think the Tacoma looks WAY better but I prefer the slightly lifted, off road look to the street look for trucks. Awesome results on the performance upgrade... I can only dream.

Do you have the ECT button in yours? ECT on makes it feel more peppy, and for me gives slightly better MPG. Mine is an 03 with over 200k on it and I just pulled a trailer across several states and never had a problem of it hunting for gears. (Take it out of over drive when towing).

I think seat position makes a huge difference too. The door difference was 2" but the interior of the Ranger looked so much roomier just by looking at the ceiling over Mr. Truck's head.
