It's really not surprising. The EcoBoost has had far worse than advertised fuel economy since the day it's been released. To me the fuel economy being identical means both vehicles were underworked. The fuel maps that optimize power and emissions under high load for the ecoboost do run quite rich, using effectively the same or more fuel than a larger displacement forced induction engine that runs leaner at relatively less load (assuming the operator demands the same average power for both scenarios). If both of these trucks were unloaded in city/highway driving with light acceleration, you would get better mileage with the raptor as both wouldn't be under much load and the raptor has a smaller displacement engine with lower friction/pumping losses (not much point to this, as the people that buy these types of vehicles drive inefficiently and tow).
