I’m an ESL support teacher in the US public schools who works mainly with high school students and I happened to make a goal for myself this year to try and learn the thai script in order to better support the thai exchange students we get almost every year. The timing of this release is perfect! Thank you so much!

Thank you Stu! ALMOST perfect, to my view the single tiny flaw - no button to hide all phonetic information. With just that, it would be possible to use in an incredibly versatile way to also continue to firm up my recognition and reading of some of the rarer letters

Brilliant, and I have so many comments and questions as a language learner and teacher and former instructional media technologist. Much respect for this amazing offering. It's amazing what you've been able to accomplish in this learning technology. Hats off to you for providing an interactive map of the human mouth's sound production, and how that written letters correspond to the spoken sounds in a number of (seemingly) completely unrelated language. I'm fully onboard with the philosophy of deep diving into phonology sooner than later. I'd like to be able to say "thank you" properly in Thai, and maybe a few other things, at some point... I speak French and Mandarin, but I feel shakey about aspirated and unaspirated consonant distinctions. This doesn't exist in English, right? This being my focus, my question for now is, in the top row, we see the sound in Romanization as /kh/, corresponding to five different Thai written letters. To confirm, these were different historically but now have the same sound? I found myself looking the Devanagari audio but it didn't work when I tried it just now. I would need to get this clear in my head before proceeding. That is my question, esteemed teacher, coming to you from Chiang Mai.

Thank you for this very useful clip, Stuart. I’m learning Thai by myself and for ages I have problem with ด and ต and also บ and ป. I don’t know if it is correct or not, but I think of ต as the “d” sound in 大 or 多in Cantonese and ป as the “b” sound in 爸or 波 in Cantonese. When it comes to ด and บ, I learn from you to associate them with “n” and “m”. However, there is something I don’t get from the map of the mouth in this clip, how can you position the back of the tongue to the top of the mouth? And what does stop throat mean(the diagram shows a little flap closing the throat)?

t = ท, ถ, ต, ด d = ด p = ป, พ, ผ, ฟ, ฝ b = บ All of these are pronounced differently. ______________ Try pronouncing it in English using words that have similar pronunciations. t = ต = street, star, style //// The tip of your tongue should touch the back of your upper teeth. (Do not pronounce the letter “S”.) t, d = ด = dead, dragon, the, then, than ////// The tip of your tongue should be extended to the roof of your mouth. This will make your voice sound a little higher. (The letter “ด” has the same pronunciation.) b = บ = boy, bee, Barcode p = ป = ????? I can't think of any examples to help you understand, as the pronunciation of this letter is difficult. I recommend that you listen to the Thai alphabet memorization. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4XOXqtrgK19fKssi=aqh75dV2esMT0qs4 And I recommend that you download the Google Translate application. I learned English by practicing speaking with this application. It helped me a lot, so I think it can help you too.

I have all the classes highlighted with the class buttons .. the idea is to internalise the pattern ..you don't need to memorise letter by letter

This is wonderful! I just started to learn Thai alphabets today and found this treasure, thank you so much for making it available. Also I want to ask why there is no tone mark shown? Since Thai is a tonal language maybe it would help ?

this is just the consonants... just one piece of the puzzle...consonants, vowels and tones. That's what Cracking Thai Fundamentals is about... really understanding each of the components and then putting it all together. I have other tools for vowels and tones which will click in...Ain thing is to internalise this first and understand the consonant classes as they link to the tone system

17:14 The letter ᨩ(/tɕ/), ᨴ(/t/), and ᨻ(/p/) should be unaspirated like the letter ᨣ(/k/).
