@@novawolf_gamingactually, the eye can see infinitely far as long as light is travelling from what you are looking at and hitting your eyeball. On a supposed "flat earth" there would probably be some kind of terrain, fog etc. that would be in the way though, as you said.

@@Никогдатебянеброшу-л4кYou’re talking about the Rayleigh Criterion. At some point an object’s angular size becomes too small to resolve it from everything else that is (visually) around it. The larger and brighter the object is the further away it can be before it becomes to the human eye. However, with tools (camera, or camera connected to a telescope) can take a long exposure photograph. With enough time you can build up enough photons to have much higher resolution and thusly see objects that previously couldn’t be seen.

@novawolf_gaming Atmospheric haze, clouds, dust... these will obscure distant objects. Even just the thickness of the Atmosphere itself over 1000s of kilometres will attenuate the light such that a Telescope wouldn't work So no, we wouldn't see Mt. Everest from every where on a FLAT earth. You see stars, don't you? They are Billions and trillions of kilometres away. But there is little in space to attenuate the light. Flerfs make stuff up to appease their own ignorance. Believers of other non reality do the same.

It's more than just distrust, there's religion tied to it, (if the Earth is flat and space is fake it's bc heaven exists and THEY dont want us to know) and maybe even worse ego, because part of this train of thought is the need to be perceived as 'aware' or 'enlightened' ( or the original meaning of 'woke') and to prove those ideas of flat earth and conspiracy wrong means to prove these peoples' self image and esteem wrong.

The present flat earth movement does originate from religious fundamentalism in the 19th century. At that time, the public was becoming interested in scientific discoveries and the fundamentalists were worried science might hide or disprove their God. As we see today, there were those who saw it as a money making opportunity, so wrote books and gave flat earth lectures. Flat earth is essentially an anti science movement.

On the topic of really smart people, two antivaxxers came into my store today looking for microscopes because apparently one of them, who was wearing a shirt that said "Free Immune Boosting Hugs!", has been pulling "stuff" (they didn't specify) out of his body ever since he got the first shot and they wanted to look at it under a microscope. The other dude, who had on a shirt advertising some kinda conspiracy journalism website, was telling me all his conspiracy theories about how the first and second vaccines had "super cancer" in them and that's why everyone is dying of cancer these days. I was trying to get actual work done so I was just like "yeah man wow that's crazy!" as he went on for like 5 minutes about what each booster had in it. These dudes also looked like they were either in need of some kind of medication or completely blasted off several drugs and I almost asked him if he needed the microscope to make sure his bag of crack wasn't tampered with.

I sometimes wonder, as fan of Lovecraft's fiction, whether someone read the story "at the Mountains of Madness" where scientists discover more land beyond Antarctica's borders and they find a mountain range higher than the Himalayas. This story was written in the 1930's and was due to his fascination with Antarctica, which at the time was not completely explored. It would not surprise me if some ignorant flerf read part of a conversation where the story is being discussed and jumped to the conclusion this was reality and so it has passed around the ignorant echo chamber with no one actually checking anything, from the group that notoriously always say "do your own research." I wonder if they also believe in shoggoths because they were a large part of that story as well.

The same applies to adjustments for the Coriolis effect.

@grahvis none of your explanation was necessary in response to what I said. What I was pointing out was how stupid it is for flat earthers to use the pitch of an airplane to refute the earth is a sphere. By stating that the earth isn't a sphere because airplanes don't fly with their noses down to account for the curvature of the earth is a stupid position to take when we know that planes can and do land with positive pitch angles.

The concept is easy to understand honestly. Podcast like this exist for one fundamental reason: For a multitude of societal issues, people don't not understand how little they stand to "lose" by simply admitting to not knowing or not understanding something and get the corrected answer when questions arise. Instead, many will make something up, like some act of refusing to show weakness from lack of knowledge. To avoid looking like fools short term, but in fact become true fools long term. Then add the need to "double-down" rather than course correct, still preferring the illusion to save face over growth. I don't know if it's Media or discomfort among peers but they would rather do anything other than admitting to a gap in information or understanding and growing from it.

Aircraft have flown over Antarctica, the main reason why they don't is that it doesn't lie between two major airline hubs. The great circle route between Sydney and Santiago only passes over sea ice, not the continent itself. Of course, the concept of great circle routes goes way over flat earther's heads.

Fun story - my dad worked for Boeing, as an engineer on the 747. He also worked for NASA on the Lunar Module, and was a non-commercial pilot (doesn't fly anymore). According to flat earthers, not just him, by I also would be part of the conspiracy. FYI - I am not.
