..always choose taxi to tuk-tuk. It's safer, with AC & most of the time they on the meter. One tip to share try to hail one away from yr hotel, away frm BIG shopping malls such as Terminal 21. I'm not comfortable with taxi driver who ask for an amount for the trip. The meter reading is there for a reason. However I'll be more than happy to tip honest driver who don't go arnd conning tourists. ;-)

Before you get into a tuk tuk, always ask for the cost first. If there are 3 of you and the driver tells you that it cost 100baht ask him if it is for one person or for 3 persons. If you do not ask, he will charge you 300 baht when you reach you destination by telling you that 100baht is for 1 person.

Yep, I was heading to the Grand Palace and got stopped outside the wall and was told it was closed, so he helped me get a Tuk Tuk to go to some other temples instead, then I ended up in a suit shop where I bought 4 suits. Honestly, I am glad I did, cause they are amazing suits for a cheap price, that I wear every week. I also saw the Grand Palace the next day, but nevertheless, I definitely got scammed, even though I am kinda glad I did, cause I look great in the suits.

Paying the taxi drivers more than the going rate just encourages them. You may think you're helping them but all you are doing is helping them fuck over other tourists.

I think your video is helpful for the many people that jump on planes and have no idea about Thailand or Asia. Taxis not putting the meter on is probably the one people will come across most. Taxi drivers will turn the meter off when they see a farang unless you make sure it's on before you get in. Other things to watch for in bars and restaurants are 'extra' slips being put in your checkbin. If anything is being offered to you free or at what seems a very cheap price.....walk away, nothing's free anywhere not just in Thailand. Scams can be avoided by common sense, unfortunately a lot of people lose that when they get off the plane. The key is to be sensible wherever you go, and realise you can be scammed anywhere. Scams in Thailand get talked about as if everyone is out to scam you, which is NOT the case. Go to Spain and you will find people selling you 'Rolex' watches and 'gold' chains for knockdown prices and worse still Timeshares, not to mention the thousands of scams which happen daily in the UK and the West through credit card fraud, bogus workmen, theft of bank details etc etc. These alone come to MILLIONS every year. Most scams in Thailand are on a peanuts scale compared to this. EG: being taken on an unmetered taxi or overly expensive trip might cost you £10 or £50 more. What I'm saying is, yes there are scams in Thailand but it's wrong for anyone to think you'll be scammed everywhere you go. People just need to be sensible and don't leave their common sense at the airport. On the subject of scams, people should also be aware that using their normal bank debit card for cash withdrawals is likely to cost them a lot more than an unmetered taxi ride around Bangkok. Our great 'honest' UK banks (most) charge rip-off fees every time you withdraw from an ATM. There is a fee for the withdrawal at the ATM and a currency conversion charge and the Thai Bank will charge you £3 also. Withdrawing £100 five times can cost about £12 each time, a total rip-off. Carrying cash over what you need for the day isn't sensible wherever you travel, so the best answer is to obtain a no annual fee Currency Card which you can load up only what you want on it direct from your bank account. The charge on the best ones is about 2-2.5%, a lot less than using your own bank card. The biggest scam I have experienced from several holidays in Thailand by a significant margin was the £170 in fees my own bank SCAMMED me for, for using my debit card at ATMs the first time I went 6 years ago. That was the last time I used that card abroad!!

Wow thank you for all your wonderful advice and insight! And yes this video is mostly aimed at new travelers. I definitely agree with the bank card, also got scammed a lot from my home bank, thankfully now I have my own Thai bank card!

Hi, Thanks, I didn't mean to write so much but once I started I got carried away lol. Your Grand Palace one is good....I came across this. As you say they tell you it's closed and they'll take you to another temple, I got suckered into going on the 'free trip' but I told him if you take me somewhere that isn't free I'll leave. They took us to a pier and wanted about 3000 for a river trip to the Temple. I just laughed and walked away. They continued to shout on me to come back but I didn't. Weaker willed people could definitely be conned by this. A funny one for taxis is this.......when they see a foreigner they turn the meter off, so when my wife and I (she's Thai) get a taxi in Bangkok she flags it down and makes sure he's putting the meter on, then I come out the shop doorway and get in it with her. That really annoys them lol. I'm sure you are enjoying being in Thailand and seeing the sun every day!

I have never had any issue with taxi drivers, but I have been going to Thailand since 1970.HOWEVER you left out the number one WORST and most EXPENSIVE Scam. NEVER EVER rent a Jet Ski on the beach. You will end up paying hundreds of dollars in "Damages" that you never caused. If your going to rent a motor bike, or a jet ski, do it through the hotel for your safety.

one advice for tourists, if you want to buy something off of a local shop, pretend like you are not interested in the item and ask for the price. That way, the seller will hesitate to rise the price too high. One mistake I see many tourists do is they ask for the price when they are prepared to buy. The seller knows you want it for sure, and will rise price.

on our last day in Thailand my sister and I had a taxi scam. we hailed down a taxi and we agreed on meter, but as 15 minutes passed and there was a bit of traffic and it was already it was already at 150 baht, which was ridiculous. I saw that that the meter was jumping forward way too much. got out quick after I realized that we were getting scammed. we did have to pay the 150 though.

We arrived at the Grand Palace in a taxi. The taxi conveniently stopped far away from the gate where the tuk tuk's where. We proceeded to walk towards the gate and we were stopped by some Thai people. They said the Grand Palace was closed and that it will open only at 2pm. We were a little puzzled as we could see some people inside the palace. When we asked about that they said only the locals were allowed to go inside and we were stupid enough to believe that. Then they said they could bring us around to several Temples for very little money (can't remember how much). Seemed like a good deal as we thought we can see few Temples before we get back to the Palace. So we sit on the tuk tuk and he brings us to several Temples plus Gem shops which we were not told about. Lost our patience at the third gem shop stop and told the tuk tuk driver off. He seemed apologetic Enough. We were fuming by the time we got done with all the places he brought us to. Then he dropped us off at Grand Palace but we didn't get to visit it as we were Super pissed that we got cheated and wasted our entire day. It's unfortunate that Lovely Bangkok is ruined by scums like them. :(

Just to let you know..... I am a world traveler, and taxi's are pretty much the same all over the world.. What you gave is just typical basic knowledge, negotiating a price before hand, not getting in the cab, ect.. My advice is to just avoid cabs all together!! if you can! Even if you negotiate a price.. once you get there the cab driver can welch on that deal upon arrival, as I learned. This was in Puerto Rico, in the capital.. we shared a cab with another couple and the driver said 20 bucks for the whole cab containeing 4 people. My girlfriend and I had the first stop so, the driver said it is going to 20 from us and then another 20 from the other couple.. I told him no!! Got mad and didn't give him a dime, and left the cab and took off without paying!!! of course I agrued with him a bit, raising my voice at him before hand and then left.. So just watch out, be firm, stand your ground, and just avoid taxi's if you can.!

+Joe Gill, - Before you get into a tuk tuk or taxi in Thailand, always ask for the cost first. If there are 3 of you and the driver tells you that it cost 100baht ask him if it is for one person or for 3 persons. If you do not ask, he will charge you 300 baht when you reach your destination by telling you that 100baht is for 1 person.

Taxis are so cheap in Thailand that even if you get fucked its only for a couple of dollars at most so is that worth getting injured or killed. I always avoid tuk tuk's and walk away from any taxi that has the rear door locked and tries to negotiate through the window or if he won't turn the meter on I get out and find another one. Occasionally, if I get in the taxi and the driver refuses to take me to a particular destination and is rude about it I just get out and leave the door wide open so he has to exit the car to close it. Most of the time they are polite and may try to negotiate a bit to earn a bit more because for the most part they make very little.

Do not let these minor things stop you from visiting different places. That's just part of enjoyment. Behave and tell the taxi drivers that you have been in Thailand five times. Keep in mind there isn,t 0% or 100% in life. Carry travellers checks rather than cash.

I agree with you that taxi drivers don't earn much, so I am usually pretty generous with tips to the ones who use the metre. Last time I arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport and took a taxi to the city I was surprised that the driver immediatelly put on the metre though, Usually they try to charge a 500 bath fixed price, while a trip using the metre would be ca 330-370 bath. This metre was a different though. Before we were half way to the city it had reached 450 bath. It would probably have reached 8-900 bath at the destination (Sukhumvit). I told the driver that I travel to BKK 5-6 times every year and know the prices. Then he appologized and shut off the metre. Didn't make a note of the taxi number plate though, so he is out there with his metre still. Could be a new scam method used by more drivers though, so please be aware.

Never purchase anything from the pearl or precious stone shops. Every tours will have these shops as last stop. You will be paying double. In all shops the ladies are working on the same couple of rings, bangles, etc. Basically they are paying around with it. We stayed at the Holiday Inn i had to pay $20/child for 4 days of breakfast. It was really great. We used the hotel's taxi which was an unmarked Volvo. It was safe. Be careful on the overnight trains. You may get poisoned with sleeping drugs. Use the laptop loop rope (the s.s. One) to tie up your luggage. I.i. Multiple bags.

So you took my advice (serpentza/Churchill)?* I had experiences with potential Thai scams, and I fell for one of them. 1. My Nepali friend and I were in Bangkok for a short vacation including Bangsaphan Noi and Yai. We were talking on the side of the road, and a Thai older guy came up and asked if we wanted to see the temples. We ignored him at first. Then he walked away. He came over a second time to ask if we wanted to see the temples. We ignored him once more. He came over to ask a third time. Each time, he spoke VERY GOOD ENGLISH, not the "You go where?" Thai English. I told him that we did not want to see the temples but to go to the stores. Even then, he didn't offer the stores, just the temples. Before we knew this guy, I saw a poster of a warning for tourists not to take the 20 baht temple tour because it's a scam (5 baht tour). Before even coming to Bangsaphan Yai, my Nepali friend asked a reliable Thai professional of how much the ride would be from where we were to where we wanted to go. It was 60 baht. All the Thai taxis said 180, 120, and the lowest offer was 80 baht. But my friend, in my opinion, was just being a jerk. He wanted to show the Thais that we knew the correct price. 2. There are Nepali, Indian, Iranians, and other South Asians in Thailand who will rip tourists off in the suit stores. I wanted to buy a suit for a university presentation. I thought since this is Asia, it would be cheaper. Well, it was, but not relative to what it costs inside the country. Instead of paying what it would normally cost, 3500-5000 baht, I paid at least 1000 baht over that. I don't remember the exact price. In addition, I needed holes to be patched and buttons to be replaced in some of my pants. They overcharged me in the thousands of baht (4000-6000?) when all it would cost is 100 baht or less at some Thai sewing station. I learned this the hard way. I told my Nepali friend, and he told his Russian wife. They both wanted to slap me. One day my Nepali friend went to the store and confronted the worker. "Friendly" words were exchanged. I looked around in the poor areas of Hua Hin and found a sewing station of this middle-aged Thai woman who spoke little English, but we could understand each other since I knew more Thai than she knew English. I came to her several times to fix my clothes. It was never more than 60 baht if I recall. I would even throw in a tip because she saved me so much money. (Behind the Hua Hin train station is a series of stores and restaurants. If you're looking at the stores from the station, the lady is towards the right. If you head down that way and look on the left, passed the 7-11, until you see a gray wall bending on the right side of the alley. Head down there, and she will be on the right with a yellow sign in red Thai print for various sewing jobs she does). So what I recommend for everyone going to Thailand for the first time is to 1) read a book like "Living Abroad in Thailand" and research Thai scams and culture. 2) Make a Thai friend in Thailand, if not an Asian one, because they will understand Asia better than you regardless of where they come from. You can make a friend easily by giving them something that you don't have to give them and talking to them regularly, preferably the same sex so there's no misunderstanding. I have a Thai friend who was in the Thai mafia, for example. 3) Don't be naive, but don't be unfriendly. Smile, of course, in the Land of Smiles. 4) Research and ask around for prices of EVERYTHING you think you will need and want before going to the store or even on a taxi. The standard for taxis is usually 10 baht per km.

+Matt Keglovich Thanks so much for offering your experiences!! I've never bought anything from the suit stores, but I was tempted when I first got here but glad I didn't. How were the Indians ripping off or scamming tourists for charging a price that they believe is valid for their services? If you don't like the price, then move on and find a cheaper store instead of bad mouthing certain ethnicities for just making a living. Now, Taxi's rip off customers if they don't use meters because it's the law to not. But those two things are different in my eyes. One, is demand and supply and the other is breaking the law.

If you look like you are always grazing your eyes,, the chance of someone stealing bags is low. Always have a serious look. We in West are always smiling and willing to bargain, that's not a good idea. Again use the laptop chain to tie up 2-3 bags. That's difficult steal. Always have your eyes looking around your stuff. Thieves want easy preys. If you are with a friend carry a whistle. It just shows that you are not an easy target. At airports always use taxis from official booths. They have prices listed. Donot speak with drivers. If they ask just say all plans done with five other friends.

if you can't control you lose it. Always do the approaching yourself and don't always chose the cheapest options. Take uber, agree on a FAIR price before entering any transaction of any kind. Too low will piss off the person, too high and you're getting a bad deal. Its not that hard, but obviously keep your money and valuables in your pocket or backpack and carry that EVERYWHERE you go! Alcohol can be laced with other drugs, so if you do drink, be very careful, watch your beverages being opened and all that. Try to find friendly locals that you approach and then let them be your guide, avoid anyone approaching you, they do not have your best interest. Learn to feel out predators. In a place like Thailand, the foreigners can be suspect partially because they won't be there long time. Police will pocket most fines, like no drivers licenses or helmet... 500 baht each... Keep like 200 baht in a pocket to try to negotiate the fine lower. If your in the wrong, your in the wrong don't push your luck, but at least make an attempt to lower the amount. This actually happened to me today, no drivers license and no helmet, cost me 1000 baht, about $30 today. Oh well, you live and learn. But hey, I was wrong, I should have been wearing my helmet. And so parting with $15 is better than cracking my head open. Cheap life lesson. Not exactly a scam when the end result is me actually being protected by the authorities from myself.

There is the unscrupulous restaurant scam. Beware of any restaurants that do not put prices on their menus. Example: You order a fruit smoothie which is normally about 30-40 baht everywhere. You get a bill for 300-400 baht. I had friends who ordered a meal that should have cost no more than 300 baht total but the bill they received was for 1200 baht. You can't argue about the price because it isn't listed anywhere.

From airport of Phuket. The airport shuttle vans usually take tourists to a travel agent before drop you off at the hotel. Please don't buy anything from room to island tour, it is going to cost you double! Don't buy anything there.

Our second day in Thailand we got such a scam. I remember it was Sunday and we wanted to change our money so we walked a bit around our Hostel and a lady in the front desk told us about a place which seemed to be very close ( anyway we couldn't find it ) we were in rush because my husband had an appointment so we took a TOKTOK and he told us the exchange point is very close and we ended up 15 minutes going around and exactly he asked us to go to the a shop because he can get coupon for petrol but we were really in rush so we refused it, in the end we changed our money and he charged us around 300 BHT but this is not the end of the story, he took us to a place which there were few taxis there and he talked with a man and he said that he can give us ride but the price was 1000 BHT and we didn't have another choice, we were in the middle of no where and already we were late and the place was out side of Bangkok. this is our story :) we are very careful now, maybe even way more careful.

The biggest crooks are in Bangkok, I can't stress this enough DO NOT get into a taxi unless they have a meter. The tuk tuk drivers and cab drivers are 99.99% likely to overcharge you. They always ask you "how long have u been in Thailand" never say u have just arrived but u are studying here.

Also even if you don't mind paying the set price in taxis you really shouldn't. It encourages the drivers to not use the meter in the future and rip off other tourists. If a taxi driver puts on the meter straight away I usually will give them an extra tip. If they give me a set price I will tell them to put the meter on and if they do not I get out and find another taxi. It is against the law for them to not use the meter.

My GF and I got our money stolen on the night bus while we were asleep, in the sitting area. They even stole her bank card and used it a the petrol station. In Bangkok we were also told that some temple was closed and that they would take us somewhere else. And even though we didn't go with them we never got to visit the temple. We also fell for the special price thing, mostly because we were so tired then and it felt good to have one less thing to think about about that. But we did realise they were probably charging us more than the regular price.

i feel much safer, plus not scammed on local busses. good to go with a thai friend. my back was completely gone thru on the VIP bus while driving...plus they would stop for themselves and not let us Payers off the bus. we had to pee, were hungry and such. I love the 3rd class train but I wont go to the back again alone. super sketchy. I all of the sudden had a bunch of thais moving in closer and closer. I was SCARED! Thank God the thai police on the train walked in then. one even sat on my seat and the others were all around me. beind me, over my seat, on the seat across. they all moved in quickly. I was clearly their target. I had a porqupine needle holding up my tied hair and I was thinking I might need to use it. I thanked that officer so much. They were up to No good. i moved back up to the front of 3rd class but it waas still sketchy. one guy was like "where is my computer? it was right up there!" one beautiful young girl was missing an eyeball. not sure how that happened. one older thai woman, we gave each other a look that we would watch out for each other and later she asked me to watch out for her grandchild? when she went to the bathroom. Not much sleep on that train ride. ...but still Im a thrill seeker so part of me still kindof loved it. It DEFINITALY was Not boring. but I probly wont do that again. the very back of the train that is.

ill be in jomtien from tuesday to 24th of june. any heads up Nicola? (i dont go to bars or strip clubs. i am going just to relax. since i already have a private pool in the villa i wont be adventuring anywhere near the beach (i live in Mauritius Island.. so yeah), i also dont do any drugs, not even weed. no intention of picking up girls, bar girls, or whatever there is. but i heard they set you up to make you pay the "fine" or go to the monkey house. as far as i am concerned, its more about the elephant village, swim with sharks, floating market, these kind of things. and the villa scams are a bit worrying as well as the maids pointing out damages that was caused before. money exchangers, slide of hands on paper notes and those ladyboys or children grabbing and jumping on people and stealing them. those are the kinds i am worried about.

America was a good spot once too. Not so much any more. America is expensive as hell with just as many corrupt people and police. Thai people are really very very nice people and treat you way better for a lot less money than those in the US. I can't speak for Europe. Being scammed for $20 here and there is petty, and not a reason to hate Thailand, and if you're smart you won't fall for the scams. Avoid Bangkok and very very touristy areas.

in October of 2016 I went to Thailand with a Friend, it was late about 10pm and we thought we would get on a tuk tuk since we had never been on one. It was a day after the King had died everything was pretty much closed. So we just asked him to give us a ride, he offered to take us to a ping pong show we said no, I don't even know what that is, lol he got upset, we then asked him to drop us off at hotel about 20 minutes later after driving around Bangkok, when he dropped us off he stopped in a dark ally near where we were staying. and asked that we pay 100USD yes 100USD we were like what???!!!! We told him we didnt have that much even though we did. and he said to give him what ever we had I think we gave him like 60USD which was not much for us to avoid any conflict or a possible stabbing lol. Our hotel said we should have not paid him, it was a young kid in his 20's its funny because we actually have a recording of him while we are riding on the Tuk Tuk.

I had a surprisingly cool experience with a scam. In phuket a ladyboy followed me into a pub. I just said her that I'm not interested.. She smiled at me and gave me my iphone. She saw that someone pickpocketed it from me. I didn't notice that. So she deserved some drinks offered by me. She even followed me to the hotel to "protect" me. I saw her many times again. I asked her for her address. Kinda weird.. Then ahe gave it to me and back home in switzerland I sent her some swiss chocolate. We're now connected on facebook and sometimes we have a little chat there. Hope to see jer again soon :-) so there's also anti-scam. I love Thailand :)
