Her experience was a lot like mine when I lived in the far flung suburbs of BKK, but in the early 2000s. It is a completely different experience for western women, and she summed it up when she said it was lonely. I personally dated a bit, and ended up married to a Thai man. We just celebrated our 18th anniversary! But we made the USA our home. There are very few long-term female expats.

Yeah, he really dropped the ball with this one. The overriding theme with Western women that come to Thailand, either as tourists or to work, is that they quickly realized that they are largely going to be lost in the crowd and not noticed if they go around behaving in a self-entitled, narcissistic type of way. A vast majority of Western women are grossly overweight and behave in a very masculine way, which doesn't really appeal to any man in the universe. In a nutshell, it's a man's world over here in Asia and I would have liked to have heard what she had to say about that shift in power dynamics as well, or you do not have a women first, feminist societal ideal.

Very nice interview! Intelligent lady! I am Swiss, 75,and in Thailand on and off since 1985 when I landed in Phuket on my little yacht. Thailand is a wonderful, beautiful and welcoming country. Not to speak about the food and fruit, and I am Swiss Italian! The fact that it is relatively cheap allowed me to be creative and do things that would never be possible in Europe or US. How come no one ever talks about how male expats easily meet and marry a local woman but expat women are almost never able to meet and marry an expat man while overseas and rarely can marry a local. Many women don't realize this so when they do go back to their country of origin the quality men are already married. I have seen this pattern played out repeatedly during my 25 years overseas. The few expats already married who go to Asian countries often get a divorce because the husband is enticed into an affair with a local who gives the illusion of a perfect woman. Not a good deal for an expat woman unless the woman is content to be single.
