Saying solar panels are futile is too-mild a word for it.

Wind is no good, as it costs too much (the infrastructure - which is why windfarms have to be assured with payment rates). And wind (a renewable) has to be renewed! They simply aren't viable - and don't work at all at times. A current 600 megawatt combined cycle gas turbine requires 300 tonnes of high-performance steel. To get that same performance from wind turbines would require 360 turbines (at 5 megawatts each), and they run at only 33% efficiency. A combined cycle gas turbine would require a mid-life refit and would be expected to last 60 years. But wind turbines last only 25 years, max, so you would need 720 of them. Each wind turbine requires 12 tonnes of steel and 300 tonnes of concrete in the plinth, so that’s 4,320 tonnes of steel and 108,000 tonnes of concrete merely to equal ONE combined cycle gas turbine. We've lost the plot.
