the reason this failed was because Max was too hateable and the "robbers" were to likeable. In the first two movies, Kevin was nice and only fought back if he was provoked. The robbers in the first two were also very clearly evil, which made it enjoyable to watch them get tortured by Kevin's traps. In this version, Max is a b*tch who does whatever he wants with no punishment, while the robbers are a couple who want to get a doll back because they need it since it's worth a lot of money and they're about to lose their house. They're also a lot more redeemable then Harry and Marv, which makes you feel bad for them when they go through the traps.
@noorrougelewis6704 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, also Harry and Marv were idiots who kept going back into the stinking boobey trapped house. I think the audience was yelling at them the whole time to just give it up and go home. They were also vengeful. Harry wanted to torture Kevin for all the pain he caused him, for a house he had no right to break into. In the second one they were also vengeful. They kidnapped Kevin and were going to throw him on ice to drown.

Fun fact: There was a deleted scene in the original movie that had Harry talking to Marv his tragic own backstory and why he's robbing to begin with. But it was cut because they knew you would sympathize with them instead or rooting for Kevin and would make Kevin more like the villain when he causes the traps. But here, I guess they ran out of ideas and just re-used something that would've made the original not good and there was a reason WHY it wasn't in the original. I'm tired of seeing Disney use the sympathetic villain move because it's forced and boring. This was one of the worst remakes/sequels I have seen in recent years. And now Disney Plus is remaking Cheaper By the Dozen Father of the Bride again, along with 3 Men & A Baby, and Night At The Museum. It seems obvious Disney will never learn their lesson.

the thing that made this movie saddening was how realistic it is. The couple's emotions were just so realistic and the victims here were the couple, really. and the traps were just really painful to watch, especially the "house lock trap" where the husband's touches the button and there's a needle that goes inside of his finger, i cried at that part honestly. In the original/2 the robbers were actually trying to rob him, and everytime they lost they would keep trying, they even almost hurt Kevin. But in this season the couple being the victims and it was just sad knowing how it was just an misunderstanding and they were trying to get back what was there's. And in the end im pretty sure they praised max for "saving the doll" honestly the villain character is Max

Yep. That was the 90s. Kids were taken care of but the social aspect of their lives was left to them. We still had to go to school if we were ruthlessly bullied and had to either learn to deal with it or stand up for ourselves. And while that was an absolute nightmare I can say it did make us stronger and built character. Sadly the issue with bullies now is there is no escape from them thanks to cell phones, cameras and social media. Ugh. I'm so happy I was born in 87 and got to experience a childhood that was not overran with technology but also enjoyed the golden age of the internet with AOL, MySpace and early KZbin. I just wish we could get to a point where kids can be kids again. Where they can go outside qnd explore without people freaking out about them roaming around like a pack of wolves. And trick or treating actually begins when it's dark out and existed only in neighborhoods and not parking lots/malls. Le sigh. It's why I wanna move out to the country anymore. That way I can.let my son go play outside and not have to worry he was hit by a car or that I will have the police visiting because he is in the fenced in backyard by himself. Same wirh parents. They need time to be themselves and away from their kids. Now you are supposed to be amazing at work and also a paranoid helicopter parent that should be giving their child non-stop attention while also being a playmate to them. It's insane.

@@dorianalexander2730 hey person born here in 91, married to a person born in 90. If your parent wasn't a helicopter parent, that's because they were naive and never went through any real stuff. My parents were super old school parents, we had to do chores, couldn't hang out with people unless they met their parents, and the only way we got to play outside is if all the neighbors were hanging outside too. We were not actually raised by religious people, but we did ended up living next to our parents family friends. And as far as kids being kids again. There are tons of stories everywhere about how kids got murdered, tortured, overworked (before they were basic labor laws preventing that), and just went missing/we're never seen again a hundred years back. We just have Amber alert systems and everything now to be a constant reminder of the fact that if you're having kids then you're selfish or naive. Because this is not and never has been a world for children. If you're a kid you have no rights, you make no decisions for yourself, you have no experience-(which everyone either uses to manipulate or belittle you), you have no freedom, you get what you get as far as quality of parents/family/school systems/living situations/religions, everybody wants to either put you down to make themselves feel better -OR to do some horrible illegal stuff to you, because the trauma will shut off the language center in your developing brain, and they will most likely get away with horrible things that will negatively affect the rest of your life. People wonder why kids bully other kids, it's because those kids who get bullied and those kids who become bullies / none of them have it easy. Parents don't know how to freaking deal with it either, it's a mess that they made because they were made to be messes too. Being a kid sucks, being a kid is overrated, being adult is so much better. And if you say otherwise, then it's most likely that you were either extremely privileged or extremely forgetful. There is no such thing as a kid being getting to be a kid. Unless they're dead so they don't know what real living feels like. Real living is getting to make your own decisions. Really living means surviving long enough to be an adult. Though if you're really messed up as a kid, and if you're really not born in the right conditions.... Then you're definitely handicapped as an adult. So yeah, next time you hear an Amber alert I hope you think of this, and your lack of knowledge in history for people, balming everything on "now a days" because of some privilege you have. Or it's worse, you're not privileged, you just lack critical thinking, and because you heard ignorance enough, been to enough adults pity parties, you think now it's worse than when you were a kid.

I think there are 3 things that really gripe me about this movie and makes it weird 1. You feel sympathy for the 2 burglars then for the kid protecting his house 2. That they get Buzz back for this movie for a Cameo (in a year full of cameos) and mention Kevin as well making it in the same universe (and then the likes if his character feels odd now cause of his charges and turning himself in to the police in real life after this movie came out) 3. The mom of the kid is an Irish Comedian but I have no clue why they make her do some weird American/ British accent (this is a little nitpick of my own)

You know something isn't right when you're rooting for the "bad guys" Kevin was a charismatic and clever lead. You want him to win. The Wet Bandits were clearly bad people. They just stole from people and flooded their homes to add insult to injury. Max isn't charismatic at all. He's a nasty kid. He decides to steal from the guy because he didn't share soda with him. The guy doesn't owe him anything. Yet Max is so entitled he feels the need to steal from him to express his displeasure. (Yes, he only stole the soda, but the point stands). Meanwhile the bandits were just people who wanted their property returned to them, and they needed it quickly since they were about to lose their house. That leaves you with an unlikable kid and sympathetic bandits.

You know? The point is, the key factor anyone who's attempting to create this kind of formula should always have present as their main priority when writing the sequence is that YOU DON'T HAVE TO MAKE THE AUDIENCE CARE OR ROOT FOR THE ONE GETTING HURT, on the contrary, YOU MUST WANT TO HAVE THE AUDIENCE HOPE FOR THAT PERSON'S FAILURE. Tho most common plot is that the character getting hurt is usually trying to eat the other character, like Tom and Jerry, Road Runner and Sylvester. So yeah, the people who made these movies aren't good writers

Home Alone 3 is actually a bit of a hidden gem in the sequels. I'd recommend giving it a shot. It's a different kid and different family, but the kid actually calls the police multiple times, and only takes matters into his own hands when he gets accused of lying to the police. Twice. And honestly, the villains themselves are really cool. It's not just some duo of robbers who are just a pair of cartoon idiots, it's a team of four international criminals, bringing the stakes up hilariously high. It's by no means as good as the original, at least when it comes to the big emotional mother-son moment at the end, but it's a far cry above the fourth and beyond. Plus, Scarlett Johansson is in it when she was like, what, 15? Always fun seeing a fetus version of a Hollywood favorite.

They're both adults and soon become best friends, talking about all the crazy shit they did back when they were kids until eventually a terrorist group is discovered to be lurking around in New York, and the thing is, they're a rival group to the original third movie's terrorists, so now Kevin and his new best friend must defend themselves home alone for the holidays. Jeff sees online that the doll sells for $200,000 ... you're telling me they paid off their entire mortgage, funded a trip to Europe, and paid for all of the repairs & renovations for Max's mansion house, bought stuff for their kids and also had money to spare? Do the writers not realize that $200,000 doesn't stretch that far? They could've had the doll be worth $2,000,000 instead.

The original movie was already...dicey...(Home Alone 3, though definitely not the "best" of them, is definitely the most "morally solid"), so why did they try to make them sympathetic...? Honestly? Mis-positioned cast members. Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney as morally irredeemable heels was NEVER going to work. Swap Aisling Bea and Tim Simons (how is "The Guy Who Played Jonah Ryan" in a Home Alone movie and NOT one of the villains?) (now the thieves) with Rob Delaney and Ellie Kemper (now the successful married couple that the thieves resent) and you're MOST of the way there to fixing the movie.

I'll give the movie this much: they actually got Devin Raytray to reprise his role as Buzz from the original movies. That's probably the best thing about this movie.
@dukecaliblap3 жыл бұрын
This movie kind of embodies the problem that a lot of these modern reboots have, which is that they clearly couldn't decide if the movie was intended to be for a new audience, or if it's meant for fans of the original. So by trying to appeal to both of those demographics, they just end up not appealing to either of them
@benfletcher81003 жыл бұрын

Now I am starting to think that this was a sacrificial work that exists for no other reason than to give work to Devin Ratray. Literally, everything else in the film was built around that one scene. It’s like trying to build a shirt around a button.
