The first two Home Alone movies starring Macaulay Culkin were some of the biggest classics from the 90s-- and the magic has never really been recaptured. But, when Disney acquired the rights a few years ago, they naturally had to give it a shot and see if they could cash in on the popularity of the property. Thus, Home Sweet Home Alone was born.
Home Sweet Home Alone definitely raises some questions. Like why did they decide to make the bandits sympathetic? Why did they make the kid so unlikeable? Why did Pam and Jeff still want to break in after learning that there might also be a grandmother at home? How did none of the neighbors hear any of the commotion? Why did everyone become friends at the end of the movie?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Home Sweet Home Alone! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

@ELRIC B How about Wile E. Coyote or Tom (of "& Jerry" fame)? Coyote is kinda the protagonist, and Roadrunner definitely mocks him when his plans backfire. But he is trying to eat Roadrunner. Compare that to how Tom is often the one protecting the home while Jerry is just a little jerk. I think the Sylvester and Tweety setup has similar vibes. Not to say the protagonist can't also be a bad guy deserving the comeuppance, but I will agree we generally want violence done to villains.

Set it in the Alaskan Wilderness, "Nome Alone". Some time later he recovers, gets married settles down, has kids and divorces after his wife has an affair. Taking time to reflect, he returns to the city of his honeymoon to take stock of it all. The story is about the pathos of a middle aged man, uncertain of the meaning and direction of his life. Rome, Alone. Many decades later, we return to a much older Kevin McAllister, his wife (wom he met in Rome, Alone) has passed on, much like Clint Eastwood's character in Gran Turismo, his children don't call or write very often. His only friends are his cat, Gilgamesh, and a local Mexican boy, Enrico, with whom he bonds over their shared affection for garden ornaments. He is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Gnome Alone. I will take all of that money now Hollywood. Throw in some references to McAllister as Odysessus/ Leopold Bloom and just watch the awards roll in.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that the big studio executives in Hollywood think that giving Home Alone, a concept that barely worked for its first movie, six, SIX entries was a great idea, while at the same time they had the whole Dark Tower Franchise to themselves, 7 chunky books that could spawn at least 10 sequels, and they decided to jam several books' worth of plot into a single movie and thought that that was a good idea?
