In this video Daniel and Mick begin by discussing stereo reverbs and delays - they sound totally massive and wonderful if you have the environment to enjoy them to the full.
They then move on to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of a full stereo rig, talking about signal routing and stage practicalities, before moving on to a simpler approach to massive sounds: the Wet/Dry rig.
Here are some interesting bits and references from today’s vid…
• How do you use stereo effects pedals into two amps? 9:27
• How does Andy Timmons run his stereo effects? 10:20
Here's a link to a diagram to help explain a classic stereo effect in dual amp loop set up - i130.photobucket.com/albums/p2...
• How does Rabea Massaad set up his stereo effects, and what are the kinds of problems might you encounter when using effects loops / stereo pedals into two amps? 11:43
• Not all loops are equal… 14:35
• Why Dan prefers wet/dry instead of stereo, plus demos/sound examples from the wet/dry rig 15:44
• Loop / signal routing explanation for today’s wet/dry rig 18:45

Love it when he plugs hollow body in and says "don't change anything". Also, dig the nerd value of them waiting for the echoes and reverberation to die down before speaking. That is respect for the tone. Subscribed.

I recall my early days "mid 70s" with a row of EHX pedals, black light posters and a strobe light highlighting the purple smoke that filled the room. As I explored the sonic parallel universes I hit record on my cassette deck to capture this mystical magic for all of mankind. The next day I hit play, sat back and prepared myself for the sound of angels singing. What I heard was a incoherent slop of noodling garbage.

After watching this back in April I set about putting this together in my little studio. A Fender Blues Junior for the wet side and an 18 watt Marshall style conversion amp for the dry side. A Strymon BlueSky providing a LOT of reverb through the Fender and the gain cranked on the 18 watt. What a fantastic sound AND at manageable volumes.

Chuck Hutch do you pan your amps L and R? And if so, does it sound weird when your reverb is only coming through the one side, (say if you pan your Fender blues Jr to the L), or does it blend between the two?

I have to say this video completely changed my setup. I bought a cheap combo to run as a wet amp (I'm not made of money) and run most of my overdrive and distortion through my tube amp with a Big Muff into the wet amp for when I want it to go over the top. I felt like a lot of modulation effects were useless running one amp because of the loss of note definition from them. Running them into the wet amp and still getting the clear overdriven notes from the other amp opened up a new world. Cheers, guys.

I love this episode. I’ve probably watched the wet dry part a dozen times! It has completely inspired me to dive headlong into the pedal/soundscaping world. Not to mention, it also put me on the hunt for cheap amps to mod for options in pairing them for different size venues (which I have found!) my former days as a guitar tech are serving me well in that I’m now working on amps and pedals. I don’t know whether to curse you guys for feeding the monster of an expensive hobby or thank you for showing me the way to some incredible music experiences! Thanks are definitely in order!

Brilliant! Wet dry amps are the way to go! I've been doing it for years. The low $$ way I do it is with an Shure SM57 on the speaker of the dry amp into a mulit-effects unit on the wet amp with a volume pedal in the effects loop to control the volume on the effects on the fly.

Thanks guys! I have one question about the wet/dry setup and possibly using the GigRig(that thing blows my mind). Is it possible to setup the GigRig to do a wet/dry setup with my drive pedals going to the front of both Amp1 and Amp2 and my time based effects going into the FX Loop of Amp1? Does it work by using a volume loop and using the four cable method into the input and effects loop? I've seen the Boss knockoff of the GigRig, but I'd like to go with yours even though it's more expensive. It seems more innovative and more versatile. Plus I'm a big fan of you guys. My pedal knowledge is through the roof thanks to you. PS. When will you be getting 3X shirts in again? I really want to order one!

couldn't agree more with everything you said. and thanks again for an outstanding video. guess it's always safe to give thumbs up before even watching it =) rewired my pedalboard a couple of months ago to support a dry/wet setup (fender twin reverb + orange ad30r). love the directness of a clean amp (signal's being split after the dirt pedals but before modulation/delay/reverb) and having a separate amp for the wet signal. especially for adjusting the dry/wet ratio in when mixing. got a custom switcher built (with isolated output and phase inverse) that allows me to route the signals in any combination (wet/dry selecting which signals goes to what amp, both dry, both wet, as well as switching between both amps where one is always muted still being able to select dry or wet per amp). pretty nice for recording and live. dry/wet is simply more useful to my application of playing in a band with 4 other guys where a lot of stuff is going on anyways. though stereo is fun if you want to fill a room with sound when playing alone at home maybe. but it's harder to get the right sound live, then it limits you in the order of pedals (cause not all support stereo) and in general going beyond a single amp setup just takes more effort to get things right. one thing that i recognized though with a dry/wet rig though is that it might need some time get used to the different locations the dry and wet sound is coming from when standing in front of the amps. more than in a classic stereo stereo.

Got mine:) Wet amp is a Fender Deluxe Reverb and my dry one is a Marshall 2061x. I split the signal with a tonebone JX2 switchbone. Sounds brilliant. Am thinking of creating a amp head out of the DRRI and running it through a 2x12 cab, that way I’ll have two 2x12s... :) Volume levels are great; the Marshall is rated at 20W and the fender has 22W.

As always, great show! I'd love to watch you guys every Friday! But i wonder, when are you picking up some DR.NO Effects pedals? I'm sure Dan will find some great fuzz pedals and Mick some great old school overdrives ;) Cheers

I love that Mick has picked up on one of Dan's Australianisms: "that's just ACE". It's ace.

damien millar Mick merely adopted the word ace. Dan was born using it, molded by it

This show is so interesting I watched it twice. One right after the other. Pretty sure I can do this with my low watt amps.

Thanks guys, was getting a earth hum from my stereo looper pedal and thought the hum was normal for months. Seeing this inspired me to remove it just to see if that's what was causing it, and sure enough, the hum is gone.

Extremely inspiring and educational video!! You guys rock! I struggled a long time trying to find info on the net about using my delay in the loop of two amps. Desisted but the Andy Timmons method you explain might work for me. Caint wait to test it out. Even you did in the end mention the pros and preferences of Stereo rig vs Wet/Dry. Do you believe the Andy Timmons retains the pick attack too? Specially on the secondary amp? Congrats you guys make every Friday a Gear Nerd´s Heaven.

Love your videos. You guys should make a Leslie simulators shootout, with a Boss RT20, a Strymon Lex, a ventilator and maybe a Univibe for people to see the difference beetween a Vibe and a Leslie Simulator and put a end on the misuse of those.

Used my trusty DD3 with its direct and effect outs to try a basic wet dry rig. DD3 effect out into my Flint then the V40 set fendery clean. The direct out went into the and my old JCM 800 4104 combo set crunchy. 2 hours later I came to. Absolutely game changing fellas! Thanks

I feel a wet/dry rig would be really useful for recording and blending them together to taste.
