Great stuff Jim. I can relate in so many ways. Ok, confession time. Not only am I of the generation that was raised on McD in the 60s and early 70s as a kid (I actually remember my parents taking us to the early ones with no dining room and the HUGE yellow arches, and you walked up and ordered at a window when all they had were regular size burgers, bag of fries, cokes and shakes--and the shakes were great!), but my 1st JOB in HS was at McD because all my buddies in the neighborhood worked there. It was actually a great 1st job for a 16 year old. But we soon learned we could pull off some funny stuff unbeknownst to the earnest slightly older managers who were there "on a career path". Normally only girls worked at the cash register and us guys worked the hard manly jobs---grill, fries, and buns ("Seperate your buns better McCloskey!"). But we had a newly hired female manager who wanted to be the Gloria Steinem of the 70s McDs, so one day she put a bunch of us guys on the cash registers and girls in back on grill. While disaster was developing in the back, (oooh, thats hot, thats disgusting, what's a grease squeegee? etc)we decided to have some fun and changed our name tags to Three Stooges names. We all were also big Monty Python fans so we all talked with thick English accents while taking orders and threw out one Python line after another. The quizzical looks on customers faces were priceless. That experiment was quickly abandoned, but that didnt stop us from messing with the managers. Like we would take the managers master schedule and job assignment charts for each shift and write in a false employee, again using Python names usually (yes, we were fanatics). So a few days later the manager is checking the stations before the big dinner rush shift starts, and she's calling out Graham Chapman very loudly over and over. "Anyone know where Graham Chapman is?? He's on Fries tnite!" We'd yell out things like "I heard he's got a gammy leg" or "I think he joined the RAF" etc. The manager, in a tizzy, checks the weekly schedule and exclaims "My god, Graham Chapman has got 40 hours this week!" We also filmed an entire movie at McDs on one of those huge VHS camcorders on the coveted 11pm to 7 am closing night shift which is now legendary in McD circles. All in all, great times other than the fact that I literally smelled like Big Mac sauce at the end of every shift no matter what station I was working---that stuff seeped into my pores for years. Edit add>Dammit, I got a seal of approval from Jim and then I stupidly revised my comment to make some minor correction, and the edit nixed his thumbs up...

thanks for sharing this story. I have never worked at a fast-food place, unless you count a half-day (yes, that short!) stint at Hale and Hearty Soups. It's great that you managed to work your love for Monty Python into your job - something I have yet to do. The closest I ever got was meeting John Cleese at a book signing. When it was my turn to have my copy signed, I approached John with money in my hand and quoted the famous 'argument' sketch that he did with Michael Palin. He actually laughed out loud, and then signed my copy of his book. So I want it engraved on my tombstone (er, you can wait until I actually expire, thank you!) that I made a Python laugh out loud. Good day.

The amount of times I have referenced “that’s mcdonalds” over the years, bless u for putting that part in an easily sharable format so i can just point everyone to this video.

I go to McDonald's to get 2 cheeseburgers. It amazes me that I know I can go there right now for a cheeseburger, and it will taste EXACTLY like the first one I had, over 30 years ago. The texture is the same, the little diced onions, the spot of ketchup on one side, then the little spot of mustard on the other. I'm not saying it's a good 'cheeseburger' - I don't even think of it as a real 'cheese burger' - but it's reliable, and that counts for something.

The pickle really adds to that. Been many years since I had one and can still taste it in my mind's mouth (?)

@@THXx1138 That's exactly what I'm talking about. I only go once or twice a year - but it never disappoints.

They are slightly better than those regular hamburgers but that doesn't mean much. Both are dry, tasteless pieces of garbage. It always bothered me that you need to order an item called "Royale" just to get something that actually deserves to be called a "hamburger". And if your supreme version of your brand's main item is just the starting point of the competition, something is going really wrong! I do have an unexplainable crush on the McRib, though. It's also something somehow unique to McDreck. But those ham and cheeseburgers? Let's face it, they are only here for two reasons: 1) to have at least one item that costs 1dollar/euro; 2) to make the expensive burgers look better and more desireable by comparison.
