That Smell Means Something's Wrong!

It's a welding and belt replacing kind of day. We are gearing up to start harvesting earlage. Before we can begin, there's a couple belts that need to be replaced.
Plus, we are starting to plant our clover cover crop.

Kevin if you drill a hole at the crack stops then weld it. The crack will stop from running later. Its a trick my Grandpa taught me 50 years ago. It works. Lol I am a bit older. Really enjoy all your videos and activities. Even at 80 I still have many fond memories of the farm near Macon MI. It was a 80 acre farm and we made a lving into the 60s. Mainly raised cattle. Always had 50-80 head. A few pigs and of course our riding horses. Our mom was a school teacher and dad was an engineer for Detroit Edison. But we were also full time on the farm. The chickens and the huge home gardens were the kids operation. We always had one gernsey cow for milk and butter. Hand churned butter every week and sold excess. I have missed all the abundant vegtables and berries we always had. We always had lots of wonderful meals from our own sources. The education of growing up on a farm is like no other. Not only farming, but building construction, everyday arithmetic story problems dealing with numbers dealing with crops, acres, rods, chains, seeds, fertilizer and so much more. A wonderful life! Best ever is teaching our city wives how to milk and squirt them in the face!!! After 59 years she still hasn't forgiven me!

I grew up on the farm,.....worked at a Feed & Fertilizer place,.....and worked at Nuclear Power Plants. Yeah, I know what burning belts smell like. That is the tallest corn I have ever seen. New shed coming along good.

Very interesting content, Rhonda!!! Thank you so much !!! Being a diesel mechanic for 43 years, as soon as that cutoff wheel came in contact with that belting, I could smell it burning!! I always loved the smell of breaking belts. Pop never kept a breakdown supply to keep us working. Securing the tractor it was off to the shower then to see my honey and a movie, lol. After I got older and it happened, there was a lot of cussing going on. Needless to say, there was a lot of repenting and asking for forgiveness in church on Sunday morning, 😊. I only regret that I didn’t follow the farming life after I grew up on a full time basis. Part time was rewarding but not completely satisfying! You guys make my day!

Miller Thunderbolt, have one in our shop and still in use, my brother bought it in the 50s. manufactured in Appleton Wi witch is about 10 miles from our farm. Let the welding to my son, not steady enough anymore, (beed looks like it did 70 years ago when my brother taught me how to weld). Always use the stick, never mastered the wire feed. 👨🏻‍🦳 🐄🐄 🚜

It's amazing how many odors you become familiar with, some good (bacon, bread, etc) some not so good (burning belts, anti-freeze, hot clutch/brakes, etc). Odors are such a powerful trigger of memories, both good and bad. That was cute when Ethan gave his snack to Mabel. Do you have much of a problem with wildlife pressure on the clover when it's coming up? I would think that would be a good field to be in when deer season opens up. Thanks for the silage corn density numbers. Interesting less seed and narrow rows makes more tonnage. We used observation that cobs turn down as dent stage approaches, but lots of wiggle room.

JD doesn't make the belts, they spec them to the company that does (Gates, etc). Unless they have exclusive rights to the belt sales, the manufacturer can sell them to anyone else. JD just adds their own % to the cost to the customers. Great observation! 👍

Yes on the belt. I possibly could have made that belt having worked for Gates for almost 40 years. Now that belt is made in “The North America “ aka Mexico We didn’t want to smell that burning belt there. But living on a farm and being a shade tree mechanic know that smell.

Every farmer knows that smell. More people are going with 15" rows for silage corn because the Kemper heads allow you to chop it without plugging. Great video, Rhonda. Perhaps Kevin should sit in on the English class when you are teaching that subject in "school "!🤣 It's all gooder!

Hello Kevin Joe here AKA trucker Joe, my wife and I just retired last year from Trucking after 42 years over the road. If at wasn't for her stroke we still be out there we used to travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan that where some of my family still live, although we are from Corpus Christi ,Texas anyway let me get to the point after seeing a movie back in 2013 called The Internship with Owen Wilson for some reason the on the line got stuck in my head haven't been able to shake it off my wife laughs at me all the time when I speak to people and I keep saying on the line when it's supposed to be online and I catch myself from time to time still saying that line from the scene lol from the movie. But anyways we enjoy when you step in front of the camera and talk about the equipment Bean that I born on a farm and grew up in the farm still remember some of the old equipment my grandfather and father used to used, before moving to the city I still miss those old days but my father and mother had to do what needed to be done get a better education for their children, but every once in awhile I'll hook up to my flatbed, deliver farm equipment to Farmers so it kept me well informed of the new equipment and technology that was coming out. So Kevin just keep on making more videos when you can I know it's not easy farming is not always easy always a race against the weather and time."God bless" and hope to see more videos soon.
