KTM Announces 90-Day Self-Administration Amid Financial Challenges
In a bold move to address ongoing financial difficulties, KTM’s CEO Stefan Pierer has announced that the Austrian motorcycle giant will undertake a 90-day ‘self-administration’ process. The restructuring aims to stabilize the company and ensure a sustainable future.
Pierer, joined by newly appointed Co-CEO Gottfried Neumeister, stated:
“Over the past three decades, we have grown to become Europe’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. We inspire millions of motorcycle riders around the world with our products. Now we are taking a pit stop for the future. The KTM brand is my life’s work, and I will fight for it.”
This decision comes after a challenging year for KTM, which saw its reputation affected by reports of excessive camshaft wear in the LC8c twin-cylinder engine. Following public and media pressure, KTM introduced a goodwill repair scheme for affected bikes, regardless of warranty status.
Additionally, the brand is grappling with excessive stock in the market, sluggish sales in key regions like the UK, and external pressures such as rising insurance costs, the cost-of-living crisis, and concerns over motorcycle theft.
The self-administration process, set to begin on November 29, will allow KTM to manage its assets under supervision while negotiating a reorganization plan with creditors. This follows significant changes at Pierer Mobility, KTM’s parent company, including a reduction in the executive board, hundreds of job cuts, and increased manufacturing shifts to India and China.
Neumeister highlighted the importance of KTM’s workforce, stating:
“The enthusiasm of our employees is our most important competitive advantage. Their passion is the reason why KTM is globally synonymous with peak performance. Now it’s about making the company robust for the future.”
Despite the optimistic messaging, Pierer Mobility’s separate statement revealed that KTM anticipates ending 2024 with a negative financial outlook in the ‘very high’ hundreds of millions. Plans to cut over €1 billion in operating performance at Austrian plants in 2025-2026 could result in further job losses.
Since 1992, KTM has grown from a small operation with 160 employees and 6000 bikes per year to over 5000 employees producing 1000 motorcycles daily. This announcement marks a pivotal moment in the brand’s storied history.
Stay tuned for updates on KTM’s journey through this challenging period.
