On 4th of July of this year, I realized I was getting too big. I was 270lbs, the first time I ever reached that weight in life. My normal weight is around 170lbs. Once I realized it's the extra fat creating chemicals in on our bodies that causes a lot of health problems, I decided to fight my sugar cravings. I went back to controlling my portion size, intermittent fasting and eventually 1 a day meals and I'm down to 230lbs. Hopefully I'll be back to 170lbs by this time next near.

During my college years, I suffered from debilitating migraines with the “aura”, body tingles (facial, forearm, fingertips) & at times would even have paralysis on one side of the face. I kept having to drop my classes bc I could not get out of bed for at least 24 hours and then deal with brain fog for the next 24 hours! By the time I felt normal again and went back to classes, I’d get hit with ANOTHER migraine! The nightmare would start ALL over again. The moment I’d see the aura I’d sob bc I knew the world of pain I was going to have to endure. I finally got to see a neurologist and aside from doing a CT scan and a battery of tests to rule out any other concerns, he first asked me to break down my daily routine and write down everything my diet consisted of. I was a full time student and worked part time just outside of campus so I was always on the go and made sure to map out specific walking routes where with my favorite food vendors. My typical diet consisted of Breakfast: Spinach, egg, ham & cheese “quiche”. Lunch: Italian (anything savory red or white sauce, dry meat and salad with “seasoned” croutons. Dinner: Any Chinese dish as long as it had my favorite “soy sauce”! 🤔 Annnnd this is when my neurologist introduced me to the evils of MSG!!!”. The second I removed this toxin from my diet, I went from 8-12 migraines a month to maybe 1-2 a YEAR! The occasional migraine would occur when I accidentally would eat something that contained msg. Like canned soup, Doritos or Chex mix. Unfortunately they disguise msg under different names but eating clean and keto steers me clear of these toxins. Plus, before I started eating clean, I learned to detect when a food contained MSG by either placing a tiny piece on the tip of my tongue or smelling of it while it’s cooking…like Roman noodles or onion soup mix. My automatic response is when my eyes and mouth begin to water a bit and this feeling of bizarre feeling of euphoria, which I used to think was funny but now I’m realizing how that gets people addicted to these foods!

I gave up MSG and soy based products years ago. Trouble was, I didn’t give up on massed produced products until 6 months ago. Yeah, it is anecdotal but the amount of bloat, pain, and some digestive issues, are so in check now. I cook clean 95% of the time, and when I do go out for a meal now I spend time reviewing the menus and choosing as close to fresh and clean as possible. In changing how I shop I have now brought my grocery costs from $300 a month to $125 a month. It ain’t easy but it can be done.

People don't realize that the problem with refined sugar is that it's addictive. It's not just the calories. MSG is the same. It makes you eat more than you need. It prevents willpower. That's why you feel less hungry when you do the "lion diet". It's not the meat. It's the lack of refined (i.e. purified) ingredients that over-stimulate our reward pathways.

ive used msg in basically every meal for the past 5 years. Not a single negative side effect. Like he said, the science of it is all based on causation. Every *good* scientist knows that studies based on causation are almost useless. It's like saying 'every time i go to the store i fall, so going to the store is resulting in me falling" while not tying your laces every time when you go to the store. I do agree that it makes food taste better, making it more addicting, resulting in all kinds of issues. But the same can be said for all things that 'feel/taste good'. Therefore it's a tricky thing. When people bring up these arguments i always tell them to find research that *PROVES* the claims. Well, there aren't any. Does that disprove/proof anything? No.. It just means there's not enough evidence to make claims..

The fun thing about MSG is that can also be found under like 30 different names. About a decade or so ago I kept a list on my fridge and was shocked at just how much stuff it showed up in. About that same time I put the kibosh on several snacks that had been favorites of mine, Grandma's Cookies, Doritos and a couple other things that when I first cut them out of my diet I felt like I had gone cold turkey from smoking, as a matter of fact, the withdrawal seemed even worse.

I've cleaned up my diet, avoid all prepared foods (processed frozen meals, restaurants, even hot bars that offer meat and veg are full of vegetable oils and who knows what else.) I'm 80% carnivore, and slowly losing weight. Some non-diet changes I've made starts with being aware of how I feel when I'm craving sweets. I check my stomach and determine I'm not hungry, then I check my oxygen - take some slow deep breaths and continue to do more constant deep breathing throughout the day. Then I go brush my teeth which is very refreshing and stimulating. Maybe do some jumping jacks or walk around the house for a few minutes and then choose to do something that engages my mind to distract from thoughts of food. It works! And then following the carnivore diet people's instructions I only eat at my planned meal times and I eat until I'm FULL. Over time I've figured out what size portions keep me satisfied until the next meal. Thank you Dr. Berg for getting me started on this health journey. I've discovered issues I didn't even know I had and a few simple changes in nutrients and supplements have re-charged me at age 70! :)

On the walk back to work (5 minutes) I always got the beginnings of a headache and by 3pm I was incapacitated and had to find somebody to drive me home early. So one day I asked the waitress (an older Chinese woman who owned the place) if there was MSG in the food. She said it's in the sauces, and I could get my food plain. That makes for pretty expensive steamed broccoli. So I didn't eat there any more. I can steam broccoli at home and put butter and Redmond's real salt on it and it's good!

I absolutely can confirm that MSG causes nighttime headaches. I used to suffer all the problems of an old man with type 2 diabetes. My GP prescribed all the usual medications and I suffered from my various conditions for 20 years. But I had two other problems the GP struggled to diagnose. One was nighttime muscle cramps and the other nighttime head-aches. So I saw a neurologist and he diagnosed me with migraine and prescribed Topiramate. This medication should be taken off the market because the side effects are worse than the head-aches. My GP told me, that muscle cramps are usually caused by electrolyte deficiency. So he prescribed me Gabapentin. To be sure, both medications seem to do something, but it was not great. When I got up and had a cup of coffee my head-aches went away and the muscle cramps were only during the night, even when I did not take my meds. Fast forward to today, the neurologist was wrong... nothing to do with migraine... it is MSG and possible also Sodium Nitrate which is found in cured ham as well as processed meat. I make sure that my ham is "uncured", meaning it is better and also more expensive. Stopped everything which may had any MSG, only eat fish, meat, eggs and dairy, nuts and sauerkraut... I did not had any head-aches in a year, despite I suffered from it for 20 years. Not sure about the muscle cramps, but I do no longer take the Gabapentin, just made sure I did drink some plain water prior going to bed. So much for modern medicine... it is all wrong, the solutions are much simpler. Stop eating poison and everything will be ok all by itself, no meds needed

Magnesium (Dr B says mag glycinate is the best one) for muscle cramps, and take potassium and Vit D along with it. You'll feel much better. Sodium nitrate/nitrite was my 2nd migraine cause; #3 was red wine (just red, not white). #1 was MSG. I cook from scratch most of the time and am careful to get organic when I buy from the store.

Yes, Chick-fil-A uses monosodium glutamate (MSG) in some of its menu items, including its classic and spicy chicken sandwiches, and chicken nuggets. MSG is a flavor enhancer that gives food an umami-like quality. Chick-fil-A is aware that some customers may be sensitive to MSG and is researching removing it from some menu items. They also offer a variety of options that do not contain added MSG, including the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich, Grilled Nuggets, the Grilled Chicken Cool Wrap, and the Grilled Market Salad. MSG is a sodium salt derived from glutamic acid, an amino acid that occurs naturally in the body. However, MSG has been linked to side effects such as headache, flushing, sweating, facial pressure, numbness, fluttering heartbeat, and chest pain. Chick-fil-A provides ingredient statements on the Chick-fil-A app or on your local restaurant's menu page to help customers make informed decisions.

It was a very off experience. Afterwards I felt so ill..Did some research and MSG fitted . I have to be so careful in fact largely gave up eating oit. I remember asking the hostess at a large Chinese restaurant whic dhes were MSG.. and she looked rather pityingly at me and said brusquely "All MSG!". I was really suspicious of "natural flavourings" before I listed to this.. my suspicions are confirmed. Thank you for highlighting explaining this, warmest regards, Karen

I guessed right, even before you named this culprit. This was the #1 cause of my migraines ... for years!! Until I did an elimination diet and figured it out!! Took me 6 months and a lot of lists and trying things, all the while cooking for a family of 4. I learned to read every label (and on some things, read them every time, because where there was no MSG last month, it might be there this month, or next. You never know. This was in the 80s. Since then I have had only one migraine -- just the beginnings of one a couple months ago, when I bought muffins in the store. Muffins never bothered me before, but it was the only unusual/new thing I ate at that time. So I tossed the rest of them in the trash, used my special essential oil and was fine the next day. So yes, it's bad stuff. Cooking from scratch makes a big difference.

I’m Asian and put MSG on all the food I cook. Asians probably consume more MSG than the rest of the world combined. But Asians also on the top of race with long life expectancy. I’d say, almost all Asians would be fat and obese if MSG really makes you fat. It’s all on human habit. You can’t blame an ingredient for making you fat. I understand that it makes the food more savory which causes you to eat more. But have self control. I have lived in the US for more than half of my life. Culturally, Americans rely on eating food that are easy to prepare and doesn’t require much cooking. These food maybe canned or in plastic. In the other hand, Asians go to wet markets to get fresh, whole ingredients that needs actual preparation and cooking. It’s sad the poorer countries actually eat a lot better than the US.

I think it's more about MSG combined with the ultra processed carbs in the typical American diet. The MSG causes more of the unused carbs to be stored as adipose tissue. My understanding is that the typical Asian diet involves more whole foods and not nearly as many processed carbs, so there's not the excess to be converted to fat.

Now, I can taste it and I won't eat it. This is only an issue when eating out, so I make careful choices and have no issues now. Maybe some people are more sensitive to this industrial food additive. It should be outlawed, in my opinion.

Started over 40 years ago and it had such a profound impact on me that I became very serious about all ingredients on the labels and what they do to the body. I started making everything from scratch. Then started a family farm. Then got a harvest Right freeze dryer. I had a devastating headache for 4 years straight before I found out what the cause was. I started viewing food as medicine. I'm learning about medicinal plants as well. The headaches ended up making me a much wiser and healthier consumer of food. I'm so sensitive to it that one tiny bite of a Dorito chip would make me sick. Needless to say that garbage never passes my lips. Farm to table all the way!
