I think the reason a few of these make the 'gifted' lists, particularly Gentleman Jack/Crown Black/Jameson Black Barrel/Glenlivet 18, is the giver knows the recipient drinks the more common version - Jack Daniels/Crown/Jameson/Glenlivet 12 - and they want to give the person a perceived 'fancier' or 'nicer' version of something they know they already enjoy

Nice thing about Lagavulin is that it also has a much more fruity character behind the smoke vs Laphroig which has the kind of murky bathwater seaside feel to it. So even if the person isn't specifically into Islay, as long as they like Scotch and new experiences they would likely enjoy Lagavulin as something special and different.

For someone that likes Lagavulin 16 I would recommend Talisker Storm. One of the impressive things about the 16 is the age statement, but the Storm proves to people that NAS whiskys can be phenomenal, plus it has some of those unique briney notes at a slightly higher proof at half the price. About $45 in my area (Kansas City).
