The XJS was a very iconic car because of it departure from Jaguars traditional curvacious shapes, and the V12 engine which was much heavier and also which had a larger capacity than the straight 6, However surprisingly, this enabled the standard road car to acheive only a very small marginal difference of performance, over the smaller straight 6. But having a V12 badge on the car did give the impression that the car was a much faster car. We motorist have fallen for this false impression stuff, ever since they put speed limits on our roads, and the common motorist can not use and test our cars true performance. We have to just fantasise about speed now, and that's just what we do. And so we pay for fantasy speed and performance. I have been a Jaguar lover all of my 76 years on earth and when William Lyons past Jaguar began to fade. Today they are just another car.

I don't agree. The XF did break the mould in it's day, a lot said on this video about them wasn't true at launch, but the design team led by Ian Callum pulled off the impossible. They modernised, and kept the tradition of Jaguar in perfect balance, something that was not achieved with the S type under Ford. I had an early XF and now have an X351 XJ 3.0ltr supercharged and that is most certainly not just another car. It stands head and shoulders above its rivals in design, presence, and yet still holds on to Jaguar dna. The continued use of supercharged V6 and V8 engines is pure heritage and makes them drive like no other in it's class. My XJ is rare and turns heads. It's 100% Jag.

If high speed floats your boat, I can’t argue with that, but I think there’s much to appreciate about the XJS and V12s in general besides high speed. I have one. I know a V8 Mercedes is faster. Doesn’t bother me one bit.

The V12 is an all aluminium engine and therefore weighs only 30kgs more than the XK engine. It develops about 300bhp with its 5.3 litres whereas 245bhp for the 4.2 litres XK engine. There is thus a difference in top speed, but the main difference is in the torque figures. The v12 engine therefore results in a smoother driving experience with quicker accellerations. A V12 XJ or XJS may accellerate in 7.1s from 0 to 100kmh which was really fast for such a big and heavy car at its introduction in the early seventies. The V12 engine is also a long stroke engine whereas the 6 cyl XK engine is a short stroke engine. Rev limits are therefore around 6500 rpm and 5000 respectively. I have driven XJs with both type of engines and for me the V12 gives the XJ the better driving experience. It's a wolf in 🐑 clothes. Block the auto gearbox in 1st gear, accelerate until the gearbox changes to second gear at 110kmh at a roaring 6000rpm, and the rear wheels will spin as 2nd gear is engaged. Only on a straight and dry road with no other traffic of course. However, wafting along is the best way to drive an XJ.

Like you I am an old fart and have owned many Jaguars including the XJS V12 and having lived in England and USA the strangling of the V12 in the USA drained it of its glorious power.

The XK8 and XKR , from 1996 through 2006, was Jaguar's first V8, and arguably the one design that rivals the E-Type for beautiful flowing lines.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbot" in German.

And they are going to acheive all this with electric cars? Where is all the electricity going to come from? This kind of talk reminds me of the 70's when they stopped us from using paper grocery bags, snd then replaced them with plastic bags. What did that acheive? You see, If only the politicians new what they were talking about. It's history repeating. A few EV'S sound like a good idea but too many EV'S is a different story all together. Isn't that like a few combustion engine cars was a good Idea, until the world became full of them, and that's when we realised the problems with to many. We live in a world of creating ideals without realities.
